My great grandfathers father was Eberhardt Henry Holthouse who arrived in California around 1852 aftre crossing the plains with an emigrant train pulled by oxen. He bought into a placer county claim and started mining and did so for the next 7 years. He arrived in Santa Clara County around 1860 where he eventually bought and successfully operated a 147 acre farm in Sunnyvale. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Ratliff

MARTHA HOLTHOUSE nee NICHOL 1821-1898

Martha Nichol was born about 1821 in Inverness, parents were John Inglis Nichol and (I believe) Barbara McPherson.

In 1869 Martha married Carsten Holthouse at St Saviour's, Hampstead. She was his 2nd wife.

In the 1871 census they are living at Princes' Court, Hanover Sq London. Living with them is his daughter Harriet Ethel aged 9. His other children are at various schools or living with a relative.

However, I cannot find Martha or Harriet in the 1881 census and am running out of ideas. In the 1881 census Carsten is noted as married.

I can find Ethel again in the 1891 census, she is living with her father Carsten in Richmond, Surrey. Carsten is again noted as married in this census.

I can find a death record for Ethel in 1894 RD Richomnd which would fit.

I can find a death record for Martha Holthouse Q3 1898 RD Richmond,Surry and which would match her age. In the 1901 census Carsten is noted as widower so the death record would tally.

I cannot find a records in the 1881 or 1891 for Martha which doesn't make a huge difference to the family tree I am making I am just curious. Also where was Ethel in 1881?

Any help woud be appreciateded.

Susan

Holthouse/Holthaus of Bainbridge, Dubois, Indiana

Trying to find information on this Holthouse/Holthaus family that was living in Bainbridge, Dubois County, Indiana.

Widow: Margaret Agnes (?) Holthouse/Holthaus - Husband's name unknown.
She was born abt 1803-1805 in Germany. In the 1850 Census for Bainbridge, Dubois County, Indiana. She has remarried to Christopher Frass or Fratz in Dubois County, Indiana in 10 Aug 1847. She is living with Christopher Frass or Fratz who was born abt 1800 Germany and his daughter Catherine Frass or Fratz age 14 born in Germany. Also in the household are Margaret Agnes Holthouse's children: Henry Holthouse b. abt 1832 Germany age 18; Elizabeth Holthouse b. abt 1836 Ohio, age 14; and Mary Holthouse b. abt 1842 Indiana, age 8.

What I have been able to find the that her son: Henry Holthouse is Henry A. Holthouse/Holthaus b. 30 Oct 1830 Germany. He married Barbara J. Pfeffer b. Kentucky. They were married 25 Nov 1856 in Dubois County, Indiana. This family moved to Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky in the 1870's. They raised their children in Kentucky where their children married and had children.

The daughter Elizabeth Holthouse/Holthaus married Adolph Harter in Dubois County, Indiana on 14 Oct 1852. Adolph Harter died in 1865 from injuries from the Civil War and is buried in St. Joseph Church Cemetery. Children from this marriage are the following: Tracy Harter b. abt 1853 IN, Elizabeth Harter b. 1855 IN; Frank Harter b. abt 1857 IN; and Barbara Rosalia "Rosa" Harter b. 1863 IN. [This family is my family line].

The daugher Mary Holthouse/Holthaus b. abt 1842 Indiana or Ohio...Possibly married Henry J. Kunkler on 28 Aug 1866 Dubois County, Indiana. Little is known what happened to this Mary Holthouse/Holthaus. She was living with her mother and brother Henry and his wife Barbara and their two children: Margaret Holthouse age 3, and Joseph Holthouse age 1 in the 1860 Census Bainbridge, Dubois, Indiana.

After 1860 Census little is known about this family until 1880's where Henry A. Holthouse/Holthaus and his family is living in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky.

I did find a marriage for Mary Elizabeth Harter to John Thomas Gratzer on 25 Jul 1876 in Louisville, Jefferson, KY. She is the daughter of Adolph Harter and Elizabeth Holthouse. Mary Elizabeth Harter and John Thomas Gratzer then moved to Bedford, Lawrence, Indiana where their first son was born in Mar 1880.

Would like to exchange information I have on this family...
