I am interested in finding the children of Isaac Denison Holmes, b. 11-14-1812 in Stonington, Ct. He married Ellen Kemp on 8-8-1837. I know of only one son, Henry Ashby Holmes, b. 4-3-1850 in Stonington, Ct.

I am trying to find the author of a letter written aboard the steamer Oriole, which was engaged in transporting Union troops to St. Helena Island, S.C., on Feb. 13, 1863. The author's name appears to be Rbt. Holmes. He is writing to his daughter Anne. It appears in the letter that he may be the Captain of the Oriole but that is not certain.

I believe Rbt. Holmes may be the son of Isaac Denison Holmes but I'm not certain. The letter was passed down to me by my grandparents. I thought that any descendants of Rbt. Holmes or his daughter Anne would, perhaps be interested.

The steamer Oriole may have been built by Charles Mallory, Esq., at Mystic, Ct. in 1862. Though it is listed as Oreole. It was a 1,056 ton vessel. I don't know what type, other than a steamship.

The only reference I can find to the Oriole in the Official Records of the Civil War is a sighting by the U.S.S. Housatonic on Jan. 31, 1863.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone with knowledge of the Holmes family from Stonington, Ct. or, more specifically, Rbt. Holmes of the Oriole.
