Looking for parents of Thomas Hollinger (1799-1866)

I am researching the ancestry of a Lancaster County resident whose 3rd great grandfather was Thomas Hollinger (1799-1866), married to Anna (or Anna Nancy) Horst. I located their family Bible, and have solid data in the accompanying family register for that couple and their children (as well as a few Kern grandchildren). The parents of Thomas and Anna are not mentioned in the register, unfortunately. I've been able to find dependable sources indicating that Anna was a daughter of Jacob Horst (1776-1863) and Maria Weber (1775-1836). I've found some genealogical postings online that identify Thomas' parents as Daniel Hollinger and Eva Katherine Kozer. Some sources indicate that this Daniel was born on July 29, 1753. Others indicate he was born on June 29, 1754. Some sources indicate that Daniel died in "Whiteoak, Pennsylvania in 1816." Others indicate he "was born on April 9, 1734 married in Lancaster County, PA on 1780 and died September 23, 1800 and who served in the Ware of the Revolution. Daniel Hollinger assisted in establishing American Independence, while acting in the capacity of Captain Christian Hollinger Co 9th Battalion Commander by Col. Huber 1778."

I've taken a long hard look at the Daniel Hollingers who lived in the Warwick Township, Lancaster County, vicinity in the second half of the eighteenth century, and none of them seem to fit as a father of Thomas Hollinger. I could find no wills, estate records, or Orphans' Court records for any such Daniel Hollinger who might have died in Lancaster County during the period 1800-1850 (including 1816). There was a Daniel Hollinger who died in Warwick Township in 1821 or 1822 (inventory and other estate records dated spring of 1822), but that Daniel had reportedly been born on 12 Jan 1764, and was the husband of Catherine Stauffer.

I think I might have gotten a bead on Thomas' father when I found in the 1800 Septennial Census for Earl Township, Lancaster County the side-by-side listing of Jacob Horst and Daniel Hollinger. It was reported in the Hollinger Bible that Thomas was born on December 23, 1799 in Lancaster County, and that his wife Anna was born on January 7, 1803 in Lancaster County. In the first geographical reference that I have found for Thomas, he was working as a blacksmith and living on a small parcel of land in Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, in 1827, two years after his marriage to Anna. Her folks appear to have been Mennonites from the Conestoga valley of east-central Lancaster County. I suspect that the Jacob Horst and Daniel Hollinger reference in the 1800 septennial census could be evidence that the Horst and Hollinger families were neighbors in Earl Township (which then included present-day Earl, West Earl, and East Earl Townships) around the time that Thomas and his future wife were born.

While Jacob Horst was enumerated in Earl Township in the 1800 federal census, Daniel Hollinger was not. Nor did I find either man in the 1810 census. A Daniel Hollinger was enumerated again in Earl Township in 1820. And I have found no references to an Eva Katherine Kozer living in Lancaster County in the late eighteenth century and early nineteeth century.

Can anyone point me toward evidence of Thomas Hollinger's parentage? Any help you can give me in sorting this out would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks.

Samuel Hollinger, 1795-1846 & Hetty Schultz, 1807-1858

Samuel & Hetty Hollinger were buried in Latimore Township, north of York Springs, Adams Co., PA. The bases to their headstones are still in place and her footstone is extant. Sometime between 1934 and 1995 their headstones were removed, probably by a well-meaning soul who had read the memorial stone in Gettysburg's Evergreen Cemetery which describes their burial in an "old, neglected burial ground near Bushey School House." That cemetery, the Lobach Cemetery on Bushey School Road, is being restored. It would be nice to have the Hollinger stones back where they belong. Does anyone know their whereabouts?

Thank you for any help - Anne Brown www.lobachcemetery.org

Hollinger's from Maryland-Pennsylvania

Trying to find the name of a Hollinger/Hollenger born in PA who married Mary J. Corns/Carnes (b.1854 in Baltimore). Their children were Lottie Hollinger (b.1876 Baltimore); Susan Hollinger (b.1878 Baltimore); Elias Hollinger (b.1881 PA); and Hattie Hollinger (b.1883 PA). I have been unable to uncover the fathers name in any Census records.

I appears they were between MD-PA as the first two children were born in MD and the second two children born in PA. The mother Mary J. appears to have returned to Baltimore a widow with the children before the 1900 Census where they lived on First Avenue.

Hollinger in Georgia/Alabama

We've just discovered that we're looking for a Hollinger. We just learned that Bill's "Wood" ancestor Green Mark Wood (probably born in 1814 in Georgia), thought to have been the son of Major Green and Polly Hall Wood, may have actually been a Hollinger. The will of his "grandmother" Elizabeth Eason Morton Wood (around 1834 in Montgomery Co AL stated that "Green Mark Hollinger is to be treated as a grandson." We realize that this may be tough to impossible to trace, since there is probably a good chance that his mother was a Hollinger and that he may be a natural son of Green Wood. Anyone think they have any connections? Elsa Bill in Allegany County, Maryland

Can you give us some hints about how to search your Hollinger data base
for some clues about this. Were any of your Hollingers around Georgia or
Alabama at that time?

Look forward to hearing from you --

Elsa Bill in Allegany County, Maryland

John F. was Born about 1843 in Ireland or Canada, conflicting reports, probably Canada. Brother James Alexander, born about 1841 in Ireland. Had daughters Hannah Victoria (1894) and Kate Ann May (1888). John F. married Catherine Victoria Hollinger, his first cousin, born May 1843 in Canada.
Do you happen to have any dates for the Hollingers that you have mentioned? The Hannah Hollinger that was married to James H. Patterson was born around 1831. Her birthplace on the 1871 census for Canada is shown as Ireland. She had a brother John (may have been a major) who had a daughter Katie. She also had another brother who had a daughter Hannah and a daughter Victoria. I also don't know if they are German or Irish as one of the family trees that I came across in my family shows the Hollingers as German descent. Any other info you may have would be appreciated.

I am also descended from the Erin Hollingers. There were two brothers, John Franklin and James Alexander and James had a daughter, Hannah V., which is the other person mentioned. I have no information about her, just the census records. The two brothers, though, had 3 sisters, but the names in their father's will are Rachel, Sarah Ann and Eliza Jane. I have no information on Eliza Jane and I have wondered if she is the Hannah you refer to. My ancestor, John Franklin Hollinger, married Catherine Victoria Hollinger, his first cousin, from Pickering, the daughter of George Hollinger and Ann Patterson. His sister married Catherine Victoria's brother George. So the Hollinger/Patterson marriage seemed like it could be relatives of George and Ann and in the same family (George came first and settled in Pickering in the early 1830's--his 3 brothers came in the 40's and settled in Wellington County). But I don't know if it is--I can't find any Eliza Jane in the 1860's or after in Wellington and the will reads as though she is alive. The only other female Hollinger I found was Hannah and the marriage to a Patterson seems to fit the pattern. Your info is consistent with the two brothers.

Hello,
I am a researcher. I am at this time working on the Hollinger families. Your James his father is a Hollinger from Ireland and His mother is a Hollinger from Germany or of Dutch decent. The records are in the Ontario collection.
If you have not joined Ancestry your public library or the Family History Library (the LDS Church and they gladly share with the public with no strings attached)to look up and document your findings free on Ancestry.
Hi,

I was just curious, if you had any information on your fathers side? I was able to connect with a second cousin on here. She's been trying to help her grandmother find her siblings. My great aunt gave all over her children up for adoption. So we have been trying to fit those last few puzzle pieces to connect each other. If you do have any other info on your fathers side, I could try and help. My grandfather was adopted and I have been trying to solve the mysteries on his side. He past away in 1975, so I am determined more than ever to find my grandfathers biological family... lynn12976@gmail.com

Sincerely,

Linda Marie Schmalle (Thompson, my married name)

I gotta say, the only Lillian Hollinger I know of, is my great grandfathers sister (my great great aunt). She has an estimated birth year of 1888 give or take a couple years. I don't know anything about my great aunt Mabel's family. She is my mission on my dads side of the family. Give me a call anytime 206.719.9236. I'm actually at my mom's this weekend babysitting her dog while they are in California for a wedding.

Thanks,

Linda

Ok here is some more information. Right before my grandma's adopted mother died she told her about a living aunt that she had in a nursing home in Fresno California. Her name was Lillan Hollinger. She has a picture of her and Lillan. She went to Fresno to visit her and she has since passed away. She passed I think about 5 years ago. Do you know Lillan? Lillian was 101 years old when she died. I'm thinking that maybe Lillan is your missing aunt? Could that be possible? My grandmother was told that Mable had 7 children that were all given up for adoption. Did you know any of Mabel children?

Wow lots of information!

Heather

Hey Linda!

We have very little information due to the fact the adoption wasn't legal. About 10 years ago we finally got a copy of her birth certificate which said she was born in Yakama WA and this is where we found out that her mothers name was Mabel Hollinger. It has her father listed as William O'Connor. Does any of this look familiar? All that my Grandmother knew was that she was the youngest of several other children. The lady who took her said maybe 5 or 6 other children. My grandmother, Sally, is 72 years old so were not even sure if her brothers/sisters would even be alive at this point since she was the youngest.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Heather
Do you by chance have any other information on your grandmothers mother Mabel Hollinger? I am doing research on my great aunt Mabel Hollinger (estimated birth date of 1909-1910), who was born in Montana. She was apart of 4 sisters. My Mabel Hollinger's father and mother is William Collinwood Hollinger and Elvira "Vera" Cox. Sisters are Mary b. 1912, Verna b. 1915 (my grandmother) and Helma b. 1921. I have a feeling that my great aunt might of died before 1962. I have my great grandfathers Veteran's paperwork and where it asks the person to list their living children, he doesn't have her listed. Just my two other great aunts and my grandmother Verna Hollinger Schmalle.

Palatine Irish and German Hollinger, Ontario

I am researching a group of Hollinger families of irish origin and possibly all related who came to Ontario around the 1840s. My branch lived in Wellington County. At exactly the same time period a group of German Hollingers were settling very close by at Waterloo. I am beginning to think that they may have been related further back and my Hollingers were among the Palatine group who went to Ireland. No documents yet, but would love to talk to anyone with similar info

Hollinger Family Histories: Will send to interested party

I have had, for some years, many pages of different Hollinger family histories that I need to clear out of my small apt. Time to de-clutter. I have never been able to connect my Catherine Hollinger to any family, despite years of trying to do so. She was the wife of David Hoffman; born in PA 12 July 1785; died 13 Dec 1850. They lived in Franklin, York, PA.

What I have here: miscellaneous small histories and the well known (only real complete Hollinger history, it seems: "Hollinger,Hullinger,Holinger .."(etc.) by Henry K. Hollinger.

If someone can use these, and will pay for postage, e-mail me and I will gladly send them off. You can contact me off site with your e-mail and snail mail address to keep it private at: obh345 @ mchsi.com

Hi,
I am doing research on the Martin and Hughes family. John Douglas was the son of Joseph Clarence Hughes and Elmina Ellen Martin. I'm descended from Elmina's brother George Washington Martin who married Joseph's sister Millie.
Elmina and George's parents were Abraham Lee Martin and Rebecca Byrley Guy. Abraham died in the civil war. Rebecca remarried to Charles McFarland and died around 1890 in Missouri. Abraham's parents were Charles and Ellen Martin from Indiana. There are some interesting stories associated with this family. There was a sword past down the family from the supposed Rev. war soldier Joseph Martin, grandfather of Charles. This sword is now in the possession of a distant cousin. Abraham ran away or was bound out to a man named Nosbourne Thomas at about age 13.

I have found that Charles died in 1853 and was buried in West Union Cemetery in Parke Co. He married about five times. I know a little more, but not much. Rebecca Guy's parents were George T. and Elmina Guy.

I would love to know what you have on these folks, and will be glad to share all that I have. Please e-mail me at jonathan@reeveshome.org.
Thanks,
Jonathan Reeves
