I am trying to identify this child. The picture looks as if it were taken at a summer cottage. The sign on the cottage reads Rose Cliff and the area appears wooded with at least one other cottage very near. My family lived in the Chicago area at the time, so Michigan, Wisconsin or the Indiana dunes are possibilities. There are three toddlers in a sandbox. My mother Betty Nell, her cousin Marian Frances Turner and a boy a year or two younger. The girls are identified by their first and middle names, but I am not sure if Holcroft is the little boy's middle or last name.

Thomas HOLCROFT b. Abt. 1785 of Upholland / Wigan, Lancashire

Thomas HOLCROFT (gardener) married Ann CLAYTON on 15 Nov 1824 at the Parish Church in Wigan. Ann was born about 1784.

Ann had three illegitimate children prior to her marriage to Thomas HOLCROFT, namely William CLAYTON chr. 1816 Upholland; Mary CLAYTON chr. 1819 Upholland; and Nathan CLAYTON chr. 1823. Nathan was buried 2 May 1826 in Upholland and is identified as the son of Thomas and Ann HOLCROFT.

I found the following baptismal records, which suggest Thomas and Ann HOLCROFT may have had two children following their marriage:
Richard HOLCROFT chr. 1826 Upholland, son of Thomas and ‘Anne’ HOLCROFT, occupation of father: Labourer
Elizabeth HOLCROFT chr. 4 Feb 1827 Upholland, son of Thomas and ‘Anne’ HOLCROFT, occupation of father: Shopkeeper.
As Thomas HOLCROFT is a common name in these parts and the spelling of Ann is different, it is possible this is a different Thomas HOLCROFT.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who may have information about Thomas HOLCROFT.

Gertrude Holcroft, b. 1778

Trying to find out more on my Holcroft
ancestors. Gertrude Holcroft/Hollcraft was
born 11 April 1778 near New York City, NY,
she died 1855 at Keith, OH, she married to
Wilbur Sprague in 1796, Washington Co. OH
Wilbur and Gertrude had several children, one
being Mary Sprague, wife of Hosea Simons.
If my source is right, Gertrude is daughter
of John Holcroft (of PA), he was possibly
born 14 Feb 1741,and died 1785. Wife of John
was possibly "Elizabeth" (unknown last name).
Does anyone have more on ancestors of
Gertrude?
Thanks for any help.
Donald W.

I've not managed to get so far back with my ancestors, but I'm looking for a William HOLCROFT in Wigan. Have you come across this name?

I've posted another message on this message board, and here are the details ....

My maternal grandmother was born Maggie HOLCROFT, in 1908 in the Wigan area, Lancashire. I have obtained a copy of her birth certificate, showing:

Mother: Sarah HOLCROFT, formerly EMMETT
Father: William HOLCROFT
The family's address at the time was 9 Arthur Street, Ince

William and Sarah already had at least two children older than Maggie (Anna and John est. b. 1902), and later a younger daughter (Sarah).
Sarah (the mother) died in about 1915, and William moved the family to Barry, Wales, and re-married. The new wife may have been called Georgina Babs. William died in either 1957 or 1958. The family estimates William's birth around 1887.

Finding out any more information about William HOLCROFT and Sarah EMETT has proved very difficult. I have spoken to the living children of all four known children, but have not managed to find out anything else about the family. I can only guess at Sarah's age, and cannot find them on the 1901 census.

I have found one possible birth record (Sarah EMMETT - Jun 1889, Wigan) but have no idea if this is the correct person.

Does anyone have any information on this family, or any advice on how to proceed from here? (I now live in Canada, so popping down to Wigan RO would be tricky!).

If you're aware of any link between the families, please let me know.

Thanks
Caroline Lightowler

If you are still interested in pursuing the connection, I am still searching for more information on the Holcrofts.

I too am researching a Thomas HOLCROFT from the Wigan area, possibly Winstanley or Upholland.

My Thomas HOLCROFT married Ann CLAYTON on Nov. 15, 1824 at the Parish Church in Wigan. Ann is roughly 38 at the time of her marriage. Ann (Clayton) HOLCROFT is a widow by the 1851 census and is living with her son William CLAYTON in Winstanley. She is also recorded as a visitor in the house of Richard FAIRHURST in Upholland in the 1851 Census. Someone obviously thought she should be enumerated even though she wasn't home.

Let me know if you see any connection or if you run across any info. that may be of interest.

Dear Heather,

This is very interesting. Leah Waghorn was my paternal grandmother and I have happy memories of holidays in Almondsbury and I can just recall meeting Caroline, known as Carrie, and her husband, Fred. I know that Caroline had 6 sons; including twins. I can also recall, as a child, visiting one of the families, Norman, who worked in the aeronautical industry in Bristol. I believe that the twins settled in Canada.

Caroline was one of 11 children, although I may have just found a twelfth. Her mother was Elizabeth Bradshaw and her father Joseph Holcroft. They lived in Manchester and established a dressmaking business.

I can trace the Holcrofts back through several generations, partly via information from a descendant of one of Caroline's brothers.

My contact address is nigel@thewaghorns.co.uk if you would like to make direct contact as it sounds as though there is plenty of information to share.

I have some photographs from the 1930's with Leah, Caroline and Edith, a sister who emigrated to Australia.

Best regards,

Nigel Waghorn

The Edith Holcroft, in my records, was born in 1883/1884. She was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England. She was one of eleven children.
Are you replying from the UK or the US ?
I know that she had another sister (Caroline) who had twin boys.
Post an email address if you think there could be a connection.

Wondering what's going on with my Holcroft ancestors!

Two days ago I was SO happy. I located my great-great grandpa in 1880 in Randolph Co and found both his state of birth and his dad's country of birth. HOORAY right? Wrong. Today I had the bright idea to go to our local library and found info on his 1 of his brothers. Family tradition has it that my great-great-great grandma was traveling from the north (MO supposedly) down to AR with her three young sons (7,3, and abt 1) and a family she knew that took her wagon and left the boys. This was the late 1860s (supposedly). Ok, I bought this until today. The 1880 census has my great-great grandpa as the only one in our county (the one he supposedly was in from the age of 3 when his mom died). This not being that big of a deal but in 1910 his brother was in the county and he was listed as having came from OH (John's state of birth listed in 1880) but this brother came down in 1884. Ok additional info in the AR death records indicate that John was the OLDEST and not the middle child. Only thing I know for sure is that they came from OH. John's dad had the birthplace Wales. John's brothers were Andrew and Greeley and Id say the order but I cant be sure. The surname changed from Holcroft to Haulcroft between 1880 and 1890. Anyone have any ideas as to how in the world to straighten this mess out? Thanks!

extended family seeks to answer 142 years of questions

hi. word of mouth has it that my 2G grandpa and his 2 brothers were traveling from somewhere up north with their mom to AR in abt 1870. my 3G grandma died not long after arriving and was hallucinogenic when getting here. my 2G grandpa is supposedly the middle child and the oldest was 7. i located my 2g grandpa in the 1880 census for randolph co. it listed his birth as being in OH. his dad's birth was listed as being in wales. 2G grandpa is named John and in 1880 it was Holcroft, his older brother being Greeley, his younger Andrew. I found in the 1910 randolph co census that andrew did not return from OH until 1884 but regardless of the inconsistency there is a definate OH link. My question is if anyone has something in their files about a missing family with these characteristics. Sometime between 1880 and 1890 the surname changed to Haulcroft on our line. i thank you for your reading this.
