Lewis Hogg of Newberry Discrepancies

Classification: Query
Surnames: Hogg Goree Feltman Noland Horsey Jones Heffernon
For some time now, there has been a discrepancy between information published in 1970 by Susie Juanita Hitt and the factual records available in Newberry Co., SC, regarding the descendancy of a Lewis Hogg. And no wonder, because, apparently unrealized by some earlier researchers, there were two different, but related, men named Lewis Hogg close in age in Newberry. The elder of the two is commonly referred to as Maj. Lewis Hogg, a rank, not a name, as some claim. He was married to Clarissa Goree, daughter of Daniel Goree of Newberry, and had six daughters, no sons. He and his wife moved to Georgia about 1817 with three of the daughters, and died there in 1828. The other three daughters remained with their families in Newberry and died there. Maj. Lewis Hogg was born Sept. 1, 1755, and died Sept. 9, 1828, in Newton Co., GA where he is buried at the Red Oak United Methodist Church. His parents were John Hogg who died in 1781, and either Sarah, John’s widow, or a previous wife unknown to us. Maj. Lewis Hogg had brothers James, John, Joseph, Stephen, Thomas, and Zachariah, and a sister Margaret. All of these married and have known families.

The slightly younger Lewis Hogg was born Feb. 14, 1765, and died Aug. 10, 1855, in Newberry, and is buried at the Enoree Baptist Church. His wife was Rosannah Feltman, b. Feb 1, 1766, d. Mar. 11, 1850, also buried with him.
They may have had one daughter, Mary, who never married, and two young sons who d. very early. This Lewis is the son of Joseph Hogg and Mary Jones, step-daughter of Daniel Horsey, her mother was also named Sarah.

Here is where the misinformation crept in. Joseph and Mary Jones Hogg had four sons, the younger Lewis, and a James, John, and Joseph. All of these married and have known families. They also had a daughter Sarah Hogg who was born in 1787, shortly after Joseph died. This Sarah sometimes used the name Wiley, the reason is unclear, but not a husband because that name was used for her as early as her age 11. Sarah never married, but she did have two children, a daughter Mary b. 1807, her birth year seems pretty consistent in the census, and a son, James Lewis Hogg, who also sometimes is shown b. 1807, but census info puts it more around 1812. Sarah and her two children lived and died in Newberry. Her son, J. Lewis Hogg, married Catherine/Kate Heffernon ca. 1844, and they had children Mary Alice, Joanna, Calhoun, Elizabeth, Warren, Newton Thomas, Rosannah, and William/Billie. J. Lewis Hogg(Hogge on tombstone) and wife Catherine are both buried at Enoree Baptist Church, where Lewis and Rosannah are buried. Lewis and Rosannah were uncle and aunt to J. Lewis Hogg, not father/son.

Newton Thomas Hogg and his brother Calhoun, and aunt Mary/Polly, Sarah Hogg/Wiley’s daughter, are the only three families of that name remaining in Newberry in 1880.

Maj. Lewis Hogg who md. Clarissa Goree left many records in Newberry, he was a JP, and fairly prominent, serving many as estate administrator or appraiser. It is my opinion that when earlier researchers were attempting to trace their lineage back through Newton Thomas Hogg, knowing his parents were J. Lewis Hogg and Kate Heffernon, they mistakenly took Lewis Hogg who md. Rosannah Feltman as his grand-parents, since they were buried at the same cemetery. They also picked up much of the information in Newberry that really applied to Maj. Lewis Hogg and Clarissa, and assigned it to Lewis and Rosannah, including a daughter Edy, who married Aubrey Noland.

Keeping in mind that they were all related through the first two Hogg families, John Hogg and Sarah, and Joseph Hogg and Mary Jones. It seems John and Joseph were cousins, the repetition of names is not unexpected or unusual. But it surely makes for difficulty picking out which record belongs to which person.

There are specific land and will records regarding these matters that do make it clear, once you realize there were two men named Lewis Hogg within ten years of age of each other in the area. What does remain a mystery is who assembled a very inaccurate pedigree and births page regarding Maj. Lewis Hogg. I do not believe it was Susie Juanita Hitt, it was without doubt presented to her as factual, and she accepted it, and unfortunately found the wrong facts to try to make things fit, and published it.
