Does anyone have Charles W. Hoff in his or her family tree? He was born in Germany in 1849; lived in Terre Haute, IN from the age of 7; died in Alliance, OH in 1930; and body was brought back to Terre Haute for burial.
He was a well-to-do brick manufacturer.
I am told that he was my great-grandfather's uncle, and my dad even has a few bricks stamped HOFF from the brickyard that his grandpa gave him, however we have not been able to verify this connection on paper. I'm curious to see if anyone else has anything.
I myself am a descendant of John Christian Hoff, who was born in Germany in 1811, and his son was William Henry Hoff. If Charles was my great-grandfather's uncle, Charles would have been a brother to William Henry, but I have already verified that isn't the case.
I suppose it is still possible that these two lines of Hoffs, who both ended up in Terre Haute, IN are related, but I think the connection is back in the Old Country if we are. My current theory is that these two lines of Hoff aren't related at all, but it was a close friendship between the two families that likely formed at the German Reformed church that both attended in Terre Haute, and "uncle" was used as a term of endearment. I am desperately seeking anyone from Charles' line of Hoffs to see if we can compare notes and establish a common connection. My user ID on here is cutlelilscavenger and my mom's is jandj1971; feel free to message either one of us.
It makes me wonder how many lines of Hoffs there are and how we're connected, if at all.
