Re: Great Grandfather Phillip Hoerr

I have just begun the genealogy search on my paternal Grandmother's side of the family. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Hoerr, born in 1890. She had at least six sisters and two or three brothers. Her parents were originally from Germany, as she often told me how they spoke German at home and all of the children had to learn English when they began school. I know the family lived in Kane Co, IL, but do not have any clues about what her parents names were or what part of Germany they immigrated from. I remember going to a couple of "Hoerr" reunions near Peoria, IL as a child, so I know the family had relatives in that area of IL and probably still do. If anyone has any information for me, please contact me through Rootsweb. B A Spors

Hoerr Name Origins

German genealogical researcher Erika Hoerr gives two possible origins for the name Hoerr. The first stems from the Middle German word "hurren" - or "to hurry;" the second, "her" (or "fighter") is from Old High German. Erika Hoerr believes the "hurren" origin to be the likely origin, given the profession of the first recorded Hoerrs (foresters) and the local pronounciation of the name. She imagines them rushing from place to place tending the forests.

I recently discovered some genealogy pages about my link to the Hoerr family. Abraham Hoerr (also spelled Hor) date of birth unknown, however, he married Elizabeth Moser 6 March 1836. His death was listed as "after" 1864 and Elizabeth's death was listed as 3 May 1865. Both were from Junghof, Germany. Abraham was a farmer, Elizabeth was a homemaker. Three sons were listed: Samuel, Abraham, and Johann. I am a direct descendant of "Abraham" II, his son Henry, (who moved his family from Baden, Baden, Germany to America and located in the Chicago, IL area approx. 1890's), his daughter (my Grandmother) Elizabeth (Hoerr) Barton; my father is Henry Barton. I have notebook of names and dates, so if anyone is interested, please contact me through Rootsweb. I'd be glad to share the information with others. B A Spors

I have a lot of information about the Hoerr family in Germany and Missouri. If you have any further details (dates of birth, spouses, etc...), I'd be happy to go through my records. Who is listed as Jacob Hoerr's spouse?

Best Regards,

-Phill
pjslate@ix.netcom.com

Hi Jeffrey,

Unless I'm mistaken, your grandparents were Philip Hoerr and Margaret (Loretta) Shanahan.

My branch of the family comes from your grandfather Philip Hoerr's sister Anna Loretta Hoerr, who married John J. Slattery.

More of the Hoerr line is down below. If you want more details, please feel free to e-mail me at pjslate@ix.netcom.com

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

-Phill

----------------------------------

Philip's parents were Phillip Joseph Hoerr (b. 19 Aug 1863 in Milwaukee, WI) and Margaret M. Keeley (b. 08 Aug 1864, St. Louis).

Phillip Joseph's parents were Johann Heinrich (Henry) Hoerr (b. 04 Apr 1828, Darmstadt, Germany) and Eva Oettgen (b. 17 Oct 1825, Linz am Rhein, Germany.

Henry's parents were Johann Philipp Hoerr (b. 19 Dec 1783, Pfaffen-Beerfurth, Germany) and Maria Catharina Elisabeth Bingenheimer Vulpius (b. 1794).

Johann Philipp's parents were Johann Philipp Hoerr (b. 17 Sep 1751, Pfaffen-Beerfurth) and Anna Margarethe Trautmann. This is the first "Phillip" I've been able to find in the family.

Johann Philipp's parents were Johann Jakob Hoerr (b. 20 Oct 1724 in Ober-Ostern, Germany) and Margarethe Elisabeth Bertsch.

Johann Jakob's parents were Johannes Hoerr (b. 1693, Ober-Ostern) and Anna Katharina --?

Johannes' parents were Hans Hoerr (b. 1653 in Ober-Ostern) and Eva Trautmann.

Hans' parents were Hans Hoerr (b. 22 Jan 1625/26 in Ober-Mossau) and Justina -?

Hans' parents were Simon Hoerr (b. 1580 or so) and Anna -?

My ancestor Valentine Haerr came to the U.S. about 1840 and settled in Springfield, Ohio. Members of the family still live there. Valentine was part of a large family in Ober Ostern.

Would like to exchange information with you if you have any information regarding Lee or Whiteside County, Illinois.

My husband's Jacob HARE b 1 Jul 1821 Wirtemburg; m 30 Sept 1858 or 1855 to Mary (Limpke?) Lee County, Illinois.

Their children were born Illinois:
Mary Elizabeth b 1853
Clara Jane b 1860
Josephina b 1861
Paulina b 1863
Ida Alice b 1865
Heinrich David b 1867
Leander Jacob b 1869
John Alexander b 1871
Emma May b 1873
Edward b 1876

The family removed from Illinois to Ida County, Iowa ca 1880.

Family history says that Jacob came over as a young man, running from the Germany army. He apparently did not stay very long, as he returned to Germany to bring back other family members.

Family history also says that the name in Germany was originally *not* Hare -- it sounded more like Hoar.

Am seeking information on Jacob's parents and his birth place, etc, along with spousal information.
