Hello Graham,

You mention that Philip Filleul is your father's name in your message of 10 years ago. I'm hoping I can still contact you.

I'm looking for info on my great-great grandfather Philip Filleul, who married Fannie Temperance Critch in St. Johns Newfoundland in 1873. They had a son George in about 1878 as well as a couple of daughters, one of whom is my great-grandmother. They moved to Halifax, NS where Philip worked as a shipping carpenter, and died before 1894.

Any info?

I have just found your post. I am a descendant of John Hockin and Ann Werry. My G grandfather was the eldest son of James Werry Hockin. The Hockin's appear to have lived in Padstow and St Mabyn. I am trying to find out more about pre-Padstow

I know both generations James's and my great grandfather had siblings that emigrated to Canada and the USA.
Hello, just discovered your message - Charles Home Stirling HOCKIN - he was a Captain of the Essex Regiment. He married Eva Eliza MORRIS-READE in September 1889, Dublin South vol 2, 496. She died 27 August 1892 in Torquay, obit posted in the Morning Post - Thursday 01 September 1892. Eva is my connection. To my knowledge, they did not have any children - however, given their marriage date and her date of death - perhaps she may have died in childbirth.

Eunice

You say that Eileen Steuart Luxmore Hockin b. 22/11/1892 Darlington UK married Philip Rodway Filleul, an Australian. I believe that she married Phillip Rowland Filleul who was born in Bath in 1885 and who won a silver medal rowing for Britain at the 1908 Olympics. This would explain why Flt Lt Filleul is commemorated on the Combe Down Village war memorial in Bath.

Juanita, I may have sent my first reply to someone else on this board, so please look for it.
Irene Smith & Bertram Hockin had 8 children: Leroy Bertram, Ruth Irene, Ethel C., Edna, Bertram, Edyth, Russell and Kenneth. I can try to send you the page from the More Journal. I tried to do this the other day for the veteran’s group, and for some reason I was able to email just 1 page. I tried to paste page 465 into this message and couldn’t do it. The Smith family lived in Morristown & Jersey City NJ & Manhattan and Rockland Lake NY. Ruth, Ethel, & Edna Hockin married in Rockland county NY.
Sue
Juanita, I just researched Peter Whittlesey Smith for a Veterans group in Rockland county, NY, where he lived for a while. Peter & family also lived in Manhattan and Jersey City NJ. Peter was in Co. H, 144th Infantry; enlisted from Roxbury, Delaware co. NY in the Civil War. His dau. Irene Stoddard Smith m. Bertram R.P. Hockin. A number of Irene & Bertram's descendants are in "The Historical Journal of the More Family", John More Assoc., 1892; printed Roxbury NY. see pages 464 & 465, and also p. 256. Peter W. Smith's photo is on p. 133, with more info. on p. 134. I accessed this book on Heritage Quest. The Hockin name is on other pages also.
Sue

My husband's Hockin ancestors also lived in Dartmouth, William Lambe Hockin, Percy B Hockin and a whole host more but as far as I have been able to establish there is no direct link between your family of Hockins and mine beyond the fact that they lived in Dartmouth, Devon UK at the same time.
J. Marason's query re: Hockin Family

I may have a clue for you in regards to your request for information about Thomas Hockin. I have in my family tree a Joseph Hockin who was married to a Jane Tinney. I think your Bessie Tinney may have been a sister of Jane and Thomas may have been a brother of Joseph. I had one clue only as the existence of Thomas. The Hockins came to southern Ontario in the early 1850s. The Tinney family resided at Kincardine, Ontario, at the time of Joseph's marriage to Jane. Nora Hockin passed away in November, 2001. Let me know if you heard from her about Thomas, as I have no information about him except that he was born in 1830.

I can find info tracing the Hockin line back to Richard Hockin D 1590, Gwithain Cornwall, England,

There does not seem to be any family history going back any further on the web. Is this the beginning and the end of all Hockin's tracing their ancestory?

The origional poster - Tim Hockin - indicates he has ancestory links going back to 1270......I am assuming that this not the Hockin line.

I would like to chat with anyone that has information on the Hockin family tree....I do not see a website dedicated to the Hockin Family Tree and think it is about time as that would make things move a lot quicker.

I realize that several of the family lines have been well documented but there are several others that have not.

His father is Richard J Hockin born December 1858 (believe in Devon County, but not proven yet).

Bertram married Irene Stoddard Smith and had eight (8) children. The first five were born in Morriston, New Jersey, the last three in Rockland County, New York.

If this is your line, please contact me asap! I'm trying to locate any and all descendants of Bertram and Irene!

Juanita

This is probably way out of date but I have only just managed to make the Hockin family connection while doing my Hosken family resarch over the last 6 years. That's a lot of time to trip over loads of Hockin references while hunting down Hoskens in Phillack! Imagine my surprise to find that I'm actually descended from them as well!

My 2x great grandmother was Caroline Donnithorne (more about those Donnithornes on other Rootsweb pages, especially poor old Eliza Emily - my Caroline's 6th cousin, in Australia who was the model for Dickens' Miss Havisham in Great Expectations.) Caroline was born 1817 & married my 2x Gt Grandfather Richard Hosken of the Loggans mill & HTP (Hosken Trevithick & Polkinghorne) Hoskens of Phillack, Copperhouses, Penmare and Ventonleague.

Caroline's parents were James Donnithorne & Grace Rowe. Grace was born in Phillack in 1774 and her parents were Richard Rowe and Grace Hockin. Grace and Richard were married Phillack 13/9/1772.

I've tried e-mailing Dave Hockin but have had no response. I can't seem to find this family tree of his that people have mentioned. With 2 leaps in the dark I could get myself bck to his 'John the Hurler' that he mentions on his home pages. Try the following for size and please feel free to put me right because I've only just started looking at these Hockins and already have a brain turning to mush at the number of Johns in the family. Horrendous!

I've produced the following from IGI (Batch numbers wherever possible - Thanks so much Hugh Wallis!) and the Phillack OPC records online at GENUKI:
Grace Hockyn baptised 20/2/1733 Phillack to John & Honour.
John married Honour Richards 10/2/1728 Illogan.
A John Hockin was baptised 24/3/1706 to John & Katherine in Phillack. I'm not sure if that is the right John but if it is then John Hockyn married Katherine Harris 10/6/1704 in Phillack. That's the first leap in the dark!

The second one is this:
Is there any chance that the John Hockyn who married Katherine Harris could be the older son of John Hockin & Alice Harry (married 18/1/1667 or 1668 'Old Calendar'? in Camborne)? There is an LDS member entry on IGI of a John being baptised 10/11/1673 in Camborne to John & Alice Hockin (nee Harry).

If this is correct then I would like that John to be the older brother of the Thomas Hockin who married Miriam Ellis and has a number of internet entries about being granted the Coat of Arms - son of John the Hurler that Dave Hockin mentions on his website and that Rev William Hockin has as a descendent of the Richard Hockin of the 1590s.

Does this sound right to anyone? More importantly to my teenage son, can we lay any claim to the coat of arms!!?

Seriously, I would be so grateful if there was anyone out there who could set me straight and get me on the right route to finding my Hockin ancestral line. It would also be interesting to get 2 prolific Phillack families from the 19th century linked through my ancestry (via the Rowe and Donnithorne families from Hockin to Hosken).

Thank you very much indeed.

Hockins of dartmouth UK

Have been looking back at the family tree. My great, great grandfather was Percy Hockin, solicitor and town clerk in Dartmouth Devon UK. he married Mary Georgina Steuart Corry. They had 13 children - my great grandfather was Charles Luxmore Hockin, born 1852 and nephew of Admiral Charles Luxmore Hockin. He married Catherine Mary Brabant in 1883 and they had at least 8 children. Charles Luxmore died in a coaching accident in 1900. Like his father, Percy he was a solicitor and town clerk/auditor. he worked in Dartmouth with his father but was also a town auditor in Darlington County durham and Orsett Essex, where he died. The eldest children were born at Warick in Birmingham so perhaps he worked there also.

His children were:-
Christine and Luxmore born approx 1885 (twins?) born Warwick
Muriel born approx 1887 Darlington
Percy born approx 1890 Darlington
Eileen Steuart Luxmore born 22/11/1892 Darlington
Phyllis born approx 1889 Darlington
Steuart Roy Luxmore born approx 1895 Darlington
Charles Owen Luxmore born 1897 Hornchurch Essex (my Grandfather)

I would be greatful for any information about Charles Luxmore's children, and have further information on some of Percy's other children if anyone's interested.
