Hi and thank you. My interest is that two cousins of my great great grandfather - Alexander Cross and Dr David Thomas were partners in Cross, Hobson & Co. Also, William Curphey, the captain of the Maria Elena, was the husband of Alex's sister Elizabeth. I am writing a dissertation of sorts on aspects of the start of the California gold rush so of course the Hobson bros were involved. As was William Northey Hooper, another C,H & Co. partner who had been involved in Ladd & Co and their Hawaiian sugar plantations. I am particularly interested in William Hobson as he initially was involved in the SF office, and probably the Hobson working most closely with AC, but he is the least mentioned of the three on internet resources. A book was published on the saga of the Maria Helena, but this was a reprint of two lengthy articles originally published in the Honolulu newspaper "The Friend". My PC is not running at the moment but if you are interested I can send you *.pdf's of these articles when I solve these PC problems - hopefully tomorrow. You can email me at thomdm at gmail dot com to facilitate this. I have other bits and pieces, i.e. from the book "Old Timers: The British and Americans in Chile", old Californian newspapers and other articles.
Regards,
David

Re: Hobson in South America

George Gardner Hobson (1803-1882) was the eldest of four brothers and two sisters: James A. (1806-?), Hepza (1807-1836), Joseph (1809-1881), Elizabeth (1812-1866) and William L. (1815-1867). The family moved to Baltimore from New York in 1808. Their father was a sea captain and their mother was a Gardner from Nantucket.

George Gardner Hobson married Sarah Magruder Lowry of Baltimore, and after the births of two daughters, found themselves in Valparaiso, where they remained until 1850, when they moved to New York City. Joseph had married Elizabeth Christopher Kimball (1836-1912) and was living in NYC. Later they lived (and died) in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England. Two of their daughters lived in England: Georgina (1832-1884), who married a director of the Union Bank of England and Sarita (1836-1909), who married a clergyman.

I have been learning about this family by degrees...some information from family bibles which I own, other bits from a variety of online sources. (The mention of the shipwreck on Christmas Island I had not heard before.)

See Cotton Family Tree on Ancestry.com for more info. Or ask me directly for more. And by the way, what is your interest?

JCC

My aunt recently found a photo album in my grandmother's garage in Oakland, California and we're trying to track down the family it belongs to. The photos are of the Hobson family from 1958 to 1965.

Tracy Hobson - born 10/20/58
Mark Douglas Hobson - born May (26 or 27) 1964
Linda Louise Hobson - born 9/21/63
Hal Hobson - born 2/14/63
Ian O'Connor Hobson - born 5/20/65
Chuck Hobson - born 10/31/62

The only town that is mentioned is Antioch, CA. The family apparently had two Poodles named Ladybug and Butterfly and a Canary named Herman.

Please contact me if you know anything about this family!

Anyone related to Edwin L. Hobson (b. Greene County, Alabama, in 1835, farmed in Goochland County, Virginia, died in Richmond, Virginia, in 1901) or researching Confederate soldiers will be interested in the obituary that appeared in the newspaper, The Times, Richmond, Virginia, on 10 November 1901 (page 1, columns 5-6). It can be seen free at
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85034438/1901-11-10...
.

Hobson in South America

I am looking for three Hobsons - I believe brothers - who were in Chile & Peru. George G was the US consul in Valparaiso between 1834 and 1842.His wife was possibly Kate Hansford or Sarah Macruder. He and his brothers worked for the family freight business, G L Hobson & Co. Joseph was US consul in Lima later on. From c.1862 they were working for Alsops. William L was shipwrecked on Christmas Island in the Pacific for a few months in early 1848 - the ship was the Maria Helena. In December 1848 the firm of Cross, Hobson & Co was established in Valparaiso and San Francisco. Joseph married Elizabeth Christophers Kimball who penned "Mrs Hobson's Diary". Confused and conflicting reports say they were from Maine, Massachussets (Newburyport is suggested) or Maryland. Maryland looks good because Mrs Joseph Hobson mentions in her book that her husband's family were from the South. Any and all help welcome

I am looking for any information on the Hobson line from Armagh, Ireland. My grandfather was George Hobson born in New Zealand, 2nd son of George Hobson of Kilmore, Armagh, Ireland. He married Sarah Elizabeth Marshall in 1890 and moved to Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. I believe that they are descendants of William Hobson, 1st Govener General of New Zealand (who came from Waterford, Ireland.

Do you have any connections to this line?

Linneous D. (L. D.) HOBSON

L. D. is my Great Grandfather. I am writing a biography about him. LD came from the Francis Hobson family of Ireland. I have a lot of information about his early years in Iowa, and I am getting information on his time in Denver CO. The final leg is California. Especially if you live there and have access to state records and newspaper archives I could use you help.

Here are the major questions I am trying to answer. In 1917 while in Denver he no longer listed himself as Lawyer. Was he disbarred or retired? He left Colorado for California in 1925. The 1930 Census shows him still married and living in a boarding house in LA, but his wife was working as a live-in maid in Hollywood. Mrs. Hobson had maids all her adult life, and never worked outside the house that I'm aware of.

So I am looking for any information especially from California, but I will also welcome Colorado, Iowa, and Ohio (Childhood). I am looking for newspaper articles, photos, license, obits, land records, birth, marriage or death certificates, and anything else I have not thought to cover.

Thank you for your time and your kind attention

Forrest Plumstead

My grandmother (Sarah Hobson, born in Drogheda in 1873) had a handwritten family history compiled by her uncle Richard (1831 - 1914), a Vicar in the Church of England. This history shows begins with the John Hobson who emigrated from Yorkshire to County Wicklow early in the 17th century. There are a number of subsequent Johns in the family tree including my great great grandfather John (1805 - 1851, son of Thomas Dudleyard Hobson. The Vicar's records shows four other Johns from other branchs of this Hobson family. I am willing to share this information if you can provide your email address or other contact information.

AMy grandmother (Sarah Hobson) had a hand written family history complied by her uncle Richard Hobson - Vicar of the Church of England. According to this family history, Abraham Hobson graduated as an M.D. from Trinty College, Dublin. Abraham was one of three sons of Abraham Hobson of Tubberpark near Tinhely. Richard noted that Abraham - the M.D., married a Baronet's daughter. In my research on Hobson family history, I found Irish church records showing the marriage of Abraham Hobson (M.D.) to Elinor Emma Weldon in Dublin in 1869. She was the daughter of Anthoney Weldon, Baronet of Weldon. Records show a daughter - Elinor Weldon Hobson - born in July 1872. Elinor Emma Hobson died in 1913 leaving an estate of 6488 pounds to her unmarried daughter.

Do you have any information on a Thomas and Rebecca Hobson, whose daughter Sarah ("Sallie") Hobson married Albert Bayly in Washington, D.C. in November 1817. Albert's family, other than his uncle Mounjoy Bayly, the second Sergeant at Arms of the Senate, were not from D.C but lived in Loudoun Co. I have not found any information showing that Thomas and Rebecca Hobson lived in D.C. either. Since most early Census records show a Thomas Hobson in Cumberland Co., VA, I am trying to determine whether this might be the same Thomas Hobson or connected to ours. I will appreciate any information you might have on this couple or for pointing me in the right direction for further research.

Kathryn Schultz
kathrynsschultz@yahoo.com

Jack, the date of marriage of your Charles Fallin III to Sarah Hobson in 1745 in Northumberland Co. is the closest in timeI have found to that of the Hobsons I am trying to research. Sarah "Sallie" Hobson, who married Albert Bayly of Loudoun Co. in Washington, D.C. in November 1817, was the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Hobson. I have not been able to find any more information on this Thomas Hobson, either a place of residence, marriage record, or parents for him. The closest Census record seems to be the Thomas Hobson in Cumberland Co, VA in 1810, but I have no way of telling whether or not this was the same Thomas Hobson. If you can see any connection to your Hobsons in Northumberland Co. or have suggestions for further research, I will appreciate so much hearing from you.

Kathryn Schultz
kathrynsschultz@yahoo.com

FYI Researching Hobson for over 40 years, I found in my research that there are three groups of Hobson's in Indiana. Mine are from Northern Ireland County Armagh. emigrated to America 1760s. The Park Co. IN Hobson's are from England and came here later. The Ireland Hobson's were also from England but were sent to Ireland by the King to bring about the settlement of Northern Ireland. I'm not positive the date but sometime in the mid 1500s. The third group of Hobson's is the oldest son to our ancestor out of Ohio.
The indication that all Hobson's living in Park Co. are from England does not hold true, I know some of our Hobson's that have past through or even lived there. In the scope of Research it's helpful to know.

I am trying to find information if he used the nickname of Jolly.

I know from previous census he had used his middle name, Volintine, so it is not a far stretch to see the first initial and middle name to make up Jolly.

"Jolly" Hobson was a name used in a birth certificate for a single mother who lived 4 doors away and were within a couple years of the same age. Unfortunately, he was married to another woman at the time and that likely explains the lack of a marrage to cure the indiscretion.
His wife died in 1914, I can find Priscilla in all the other census information from 1891 to 1911 and even find details regarding her Will. On all the entries Priscilla describes herself as 'married' not a widow so I assume that Thomas may have left her. I have also checked FreeBDM and can find no entries which time in with Thomas. The last information I have is that he was living in Melbourne Derbyshire, and was a Corn & Lime Agent. I would appreciate any help in trying to find him.

Hello!

I'm glad I've come across your board since I've been trying to dig up some extra information on the Hobsons. In my initial accepting of other people's trees, I ended up with a few connections that turned out to be implausible do to the dates, so I had to get creative and so some rearranging. I had Thomas Hobson (1666-1714, m. Sarah Clark) down as the father of John Hobson (1675-1716, m. Phoebe Adcock), for instance. A nine-year-old-father seems unlikely. Now I'm guessing they were brothers, both to father Thomas Hobson, Sr. (1636-1691, m. Sarah Webb). A lot of other Ancestry trees must have this error.

I have my Thomas Hobson down as born in Northumberland, VA in 1636, but the Northumberland County website's history page tells that "The first white settler to make a permanent home in the county was Col. John Mottrom, sometime between 1635-1640." Unless Hobson's father was right there with Mottrom, I'd bet he wasn't actually born in Northumberland.

Additionally, "New River Notes" has uploaded a Colonial Virginia Register (I found it here: http://www.newrivernotes.com/va/vareg1.htm) that lists a Thomas Hobson of Northumberland as born in 1637 in England.

What do you think? I'm not sure about the other connections you mentioned. There are a lot of possibilities.

I am more than willing to share information including by email. I do not have all of my material with me now - I'm on vacation - but can forward it when I return. In additon to things I have seen you note in various messages (e.g., R Hobson's book), I have a hard copy of the marriage registration for Marianne Hobson and Robert Cathcart. Also hand written family history material from R. Hobson to my Grandmother - Sarah Hobson, daughter of Abraham Hobson, Richard's brother. I propose that we correspond by email at our personal email addresses. Mine is Thomastath@aol.com. Looking forward to exchanging information.

Tom Tatham
R
