hoblitzell in Maryland

I am looking for family of Sophie Missouri Hoblitzell, born in Maryland, US, in 1840. Brother appears to be Harmon S. Hoblitzell, born in Maryland about 1830. They moved to California (Marysville) by 1860 and never went back. Can't find parents or city in Maryland or even their birth records.

Steve Hickman

Yes: Please send photos to chopperoffshore@yahoo.com. Thank you.

I am doing some research for my husband's family. His name line is as such:
my husband, David Kent Foster, Jr.
David Kent Foster, Sr.
Mabel Catherine Hoblitzell(1911-2005)
whose father and mother were
Robert Ross Hoblitzell(1885-1952)and Roxie (Roxelinie)
Ross Hoblitzell(1855-1926) and Jeanette Cowen
Jacob Hoblitzell(1823-1870) and Elizabeth Porter.

In some of my research, I have run across two Jacob Hoblitzell's. I am still tyring to see if it is the same person who may have moved around. I have researched one living and operating a tavern in Cumberland and one perhaps as a member of the MD Constitutional Convention around 1765 or so. Many of the documents can be read on line at ancestry.com, but I am still trying to figure out which Jacob is which or if they are the same. If anyone has any info, that would be great.

Thanks,
Suzanne

I found the following obituary from the Sept. 25, 1885 issue of the Champaign County (Illinois) Herald at http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&... :

Mrs. Esther Hobletzell, died in this city, Saturday night, of consumption. She was born in Marion county, West Virginia, March 7, 1839, she removed to Kentucky, where she was united December 2, 1860 to Mr. Hobletzell, they removed to this city about twenty years ago. Mr. Hobletzell died a number of years ago since which time Mrs. Hobletzell has kept her family together and provided for the wants to the extent of her ability. A few years since she was called to bury her oldest daughter Missouri. Mrs. Hobletzell had been confined to her bed but a few weeks and her death was said and unexpected blow to Ella, her only child who survives her. Her sister, Mrs. E. A. Watson, of West Virginia, who was visiting near here, only learned of her sickness in time to arrive after her death. Her brother, Jacob Smith, of Fithian, and Mrs. Smith, of Stanton, a sister-in-law, attended the funeral which took place Monday from the Friends church in Stanton township...
Esther (Smith) Habletzell

I'm interested in making contact with descendants of Esther (Smith) Habletzell (Her last name may be misspelled). About all I know about her family is contained in this paragraph from a Smith cousin's family history (Jacob Smith is my great-grandfather):

"Jacob Smith was born near Fairmount, Marion County, West Virginia May 25, 1842. He had a brother David L. Smith, Jr. and two sisters, Eveline E. Smith Watson and Esther Smith Habletzell. Jacob Smith enlisted in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War on the fourth day of July 1861 in Company K, 6th Regiment of West Virginia Cavalry and reenlisted on March 9th 1864. He was honorably discharged on May 22, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After his discharge from the Army, he came to Illinois where he met and married Lucinda Ellen Pricer. He then engaged in farming. He died March 4th, 1915. He was the son of Catherine _____ Smith and David L. Smith Sr. Catherine Smith died in 1883."

I've recently found some information on (I believe) Eveline Smith Watson that gives 1825 as her birth date. Any information on Esther (Smith) Habletzell/Hoblitzell would be greatly appreciated.

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos. One of the photos shows a man and is labeled on the front "Jacob Hoblitzell, Great Grandfather". The photo was taken at a photo studio in Frostburg, Maryland, likely around 1870. I have two other photos that are likely Hoblitzell family members but they are not labeled. If you would like copies of those two photos, please let me know.

If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me. I would love to find a rightful family member!

Other evidence of a De Hass/Hoblitzell connection are:

1. Next door neighbors as you mentioned

2. "H Hoblitzell" published Wills De Hass's book on the history of Western VA

3. Henry Hoblitzell jr. was in the Ohio 77th as a junior officer, which is a regiment commanded by Wills De Hass.

Henry Hoblitzell, son of Adrian Hoblitzell

Henry Hoblitzell was a son of Adrian Hoblitzell, living in Allegany Cty MD in early 1800s. The 1850 census shows Henry and his wife, Margaret Carleton Hoblitzell, living in Elizabethtown, Marshall Cty, VA (now WV) next door to Wills Dehass. The Dehasses and the Hoblitzells were closely connected. Wills wife, Amanda M., is probably the oldest daughter of Henry and Margaret. Looking for substantiation of that hypothesis or refutation. My family oral tradition says that Amanda M. Hoblitzell married Wills Dehass. They would be my g.g.g. grandparents. Also interested in Margaret Pierce Carleton, Henry's wife, and her ancestors. Thanks.

I have an old family tree written many years ago that shows the family from the first Adrian Hoblitzell. I have scanned this document and will be glad to e-mail it to you, if you want it. Many Hoblitzells are buried in the cemetary near Mound City and Oregon, MO. (small towns to the northwest of Kansas City, Missouri).
