hello...my name is Nancy Spas Lombino/my mother was Ruth Hobler, born @ 1906, with a brother Philip Hobler, born @ 1900...My uncle Philip and Aunt Ciel adopted a boy , naming him Philip A. Hobler born @ 1936. (archeological professor/author) My mother/my Uncle Phil's father was George W.Hobler/mother was Hattie Decker. My brother , born @ 1937 was named Richard Arnold Johnson/Spas..adopted by my dad after he married my mom. Perhaps Rev Hobler had a brother , George ??? I am really interested in more info..The Arnold middle name , as it was told to me is due to Benedict Arnold also being in the line of ancestry.
II hope to hear from someone. My cousin, before he deceased last Spring wrote that he had been corresponding with someone in this family line of Rev. Hobler and was passing on soome info to me. until we meet again..online...nancy

Mary Hobler - London UK

Where: London, UK
When: 6th July 1774
Crime: theft, simple grand larceny

The Proceedings of the Old Bailey - Trial Ref: t17740706-37 (502)

MARY HOBLER was indicted for stealing two guineas, a quarter of a guinea, and four shillings in money numbered, the property of Edward Fielder, June 22d. + Edward Fielder. I was going past the Horse Guards on the 22d of June; the prisoner asked me if I would give her any beer; I said I would if she was thirsty; we had three pints of beer at a public house; I said if she was hungry I would give her some bacon and veal I had in my pocket; we went and eat it together; after that I went home with her to her apartments; we went to bed there, when I went into the room I said don't take my money because I have a bill to pay; she promised me she would not take it; I locked the door and put the key upon the mantle-piece; when I waked the prisoner was gone and I missed my money; the door was open and the key was upon the ground; there was no one in the house but she and I; she was taken up on the 24th.

The prisoner in her defence denied the charge, but did not call any witnesses.

Mary was found guilty and sentenced to Transportation for a period of seven years (in 1774 prisoners were still being transported to America. It wasn't until 1776 that transportation to the States was halted. Transportation resumed in 1787 but the destination changed to Australia).

Appendix: John Benson, County Treasurer, is ordered to pay Edward Fielder for his expenses and loss of time in prosecuting Mary Hobler for felony, with a signed receipt of payment

Original Document is held at the London Metropolitan Archive, MJ/SP/1774/07/134.

(transferred from the now defunct Hobler MSN Group; originally posted 3/12/2003)

Surname Etymology

Hobler is said to be a German/Czech variant of Hober. Hober (Höber) is the name given to those involved in heavy lifting; it comes from the Middle High German heben ‘to lift’; it also pertained to those from Höver near Ülzen. There is also a Jewish variant of Hober/Haber which refers to the Yiddish hober or oats.
Thanks for replying. You would have no reason to remember, but I think we met once at Ben and Ruth's home.

I tried to send you a reply directly, but I must be having a problem reading your e-mail address correctly, the message keeps bouncing. So, if you would send me a brief or test message I'd appreciate it. Then I'll resend my message explaining how I fit in as part of Phil and Dick's circle of friends.

My mother was Ruth Hobler, daughter of George Hobler (Endwell, NY) The book mentioned below is an autobiography by my cousin. I have been in touch with him, but he said the best resource aside from his book is to find a copy of a book by Herbert Hobler. That's all I have at the moment. Phil's notes mention Rev Philip Hobler from Owego,so I a certain we have the same family.

Incidents Along the Way
Philip M. Hobler
2005, 220 pages, colour and b&w photos
$34.00
Abraham Hobler (Hopler)

I am looking for information on Abraham Hobler who came to the US around 1715 with his wife, daughter and 6 year old son. The ship was originally destined for New York but landed in Philadelphia. The Hoblers traveled to Morris County, New Jersey (known as German Valley). I believe the name somehow was transformed to Hopler. The Hoplers (Hoblers) were among the original settlers of Pequannock, New Jersey as reasearched by the town historian. Your thoughts?
