Thomas Hoadley of Hartland, VT
If anyone is contemplating a trip to VT to visit the gravesite of Thomas and his wife, e-mail me first for directions on how to get to the cemetary. I just got back and it took two days to find them. They cemetary is back on dirt roads and much closer to Woodstock than Hartland. We also visited the gravesite of Thomas' son Johnathan and his wife Lydia Jaquith Hoadley and various offspring in Westville Centre NY. Can give you an assist there also.

I can't find a Thomas Hoadley in my line, but he probably fits in somewhere. My great grandfather was Charles Mortimer Hoadley, son of Roswell Willard Hoadley, and they were from Felchville, Winsor Co. VT. We are planning a trip to that area this fall and could use some help in locating cemeteries, etc. Are there any Roswells or Charles' in your line? Charles Mortimer, (b 1833 in Reading, VT), married Helen Louise Tryphena Dow Perry, and I can find no information on her whatsoever. They had one child, Eva May Hoadley, my grandmother. Any information you may give me would be much appreciated. We live in Washington state, so this will be a long trip for us amd we wamt to plan ahead as much as possible. Thanks

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner. It does not appear that our lines intersect. I am a decendant of Thomas Hoadley. It is interesting that Felchville in only about 8 miles south of where Thomas is laid to rest in the Jennville Cemetary. While I did get to visit the grave site of Thomas Hoadley and his wife Mary, I had limited time to do much research. When you stay in this area, I suggest you stay in White River Junction which is only a few miles from Felchville and Hartland. There is a Super 8 there that is decent. I suggest that you check out the cemetary in Felchville and then go up to South Woodstock (about 10 miles north). There is a Hoadley road right off the main drag, while I did not get a chance to check it out, it might turn up another cemetary. If I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me. bobhoadley@aol.com

Thanks for the information. We will be driving a motor home and will try to find a state park if possible. I have notes of my uncle who visited Felchville about 1917 saying that the Hoadleys, Sherwins and Kiles were buried in "the old cemetery" in Felchville, but "the graves are not marked." I think our lines probably cross somewhere back as they were in the Felchville area. My line goes back from Charles Mortimer, Rosswell Willard, Ithiel,Jr., Ithiel, William III, William II, William I., who came from England in the 1600"s. Can you trace your's back to any of these?

Eileen... there were a goodly number of state parks and private campgrounds in the area, I dont think that will be a problem for you. There is a huge Veterns Hospital in White River Junction. One last thought, if you get stuck hunting the cemetary you want, drive into Hartland and go in the city hall (Damon Hall) and talk to the clerk in there. He is somewhat of a history buff and knows the area well (the historical society sends you to see him). He was very helpful for us in locating cemetaries that we would have never found otherwise. In fact, he knew of Thomas Hoadley and where he was laid to rest immediately. Without him we would never have found him as the cemetary was way back on dirt roads. If we had visited him in the first place we would have saved a lot of time. I do not think that we are directly related, Thomas Hoadley came to the US in the mid 1750's. It appears that your lineage goes back quite a bit before that. Good luck, and if I can help you , let me know.

I am wondering if the Thomas Hoadley that you speak of was a clockmaker...my husbands mothers family were clockmakers and we found a Hoadley clock in the Henry Ford Museum.

Eileen - I have been neglecting my Hoadley research lately while searcing other lines, and just read some old messages. I was delighted to read that you are descended from Ithiel. My line comes from Williams 1, 2, and 3 and then to Lemuel (baptized 27 Feb 1737) who married Urania Mallory. According to my records, the next child born after Lemuel was Ebenezer, and then your Ithiel (bapt. 3 May 1741) and married to Sarah Bundy. In an old Ohio history I read "Lemuel Jr. was one of the Waterbury party who emigrated to Ohio in 1807. In this party also were his brother Calvin and his family, and their father, Lemuel Sr." These were mill builders and built many mills in the area. I recently got them into the First Families of Lorain County Ohio. They were the very first settlers in the area. Lemuel's son was Luther, whose eldest daughter Emeline Statira Hoadley married Henry Zachariah Chapman of Elyria, OH, and moved to Tennessee. I would like to fill in other Hoadley lines. Thanks, Jane

Jane-- In reading your message, I'm wondering whether we have a connection. I descend from Lemuel Hoadley b. abt 1821 of Elyria, OH, whom I believed was probably the brother of the Luther that you mention, though I haven't yet documented a connection between them. My Lemuel married Sarah Root.
