Hi, My name is Mason Hnatiw, I am part of the Hnatiw family living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Recently, one of my relatives invested to get research done on the origin of the name Hnatiw. So here goes my interpretation....

Hnatiw is a name of Ukranian origin. The word "Hnat" derives from the greek word "Ignatius", meaning "fire" or "of fire". The name Hnatiw was used by followers of St. Ignatius of Antioch.
In traditional Russian, the name Hnatiw translates to "Ignatiw". The shield of Hnatiw is a field of red with a tree trunk with five roots, with three pine trees growing from the single trunk. Above the shield is a knight of sorts, holding the three pointed tree in one hand, with what looks to be a scroll or sword in the other.

Well that's it. I hope you are as proud of your heritage as I am!

-Mason Hnatiw

Hello, we are Hnatow's, but thats not how it was originally. Our grandfather came to the U.S. from the Ukraine over seventy five years ago. When he moved here, the government made him change his first name from Tim, to Tom and his last name from Hnatiw, to Hnatow. Silvi Hnatiw contacted us about our name and prompted us to investigate further and we found this page. We make all kinds of electronic music and call ourselves Hnatiw, to put the I back where it belongs. We also found a picture of Mason Hnatiw with headphones and a bunch of equipment. We are wondering what it is you do? If you get to reading this message, please contact us, that would be awesome! BTW, we live in Ludlow, Massachusetts, USA. If there are any other Hnatiw's or Hnatow's that make music, please get in touch, we are very interested in hearing the sounds that are being created, peace,

Tim and Eric Hnatow

Hi Dwayne,

I'm glad you wrote me. Unfortunatly my Grandpa (who brought this name here to my family) is dead, so my informations are quite little, but maybe together we can figure out if we are somehow related.
I do wonder if Hnatiw used (or still is) to be a common name in Poland, Ukraine or Russia, you'll never know because during the world wars they switched the borders so many times.
Well here are the informations I can give you right away -without asking my dad or aunts-
My Grandpa was born in March 20th 1925 in Kawnsko / Poland. His Mothers name was Nadja (too) and he had an older Sister, by the time he left Poland his Mother was sick. At first the Nazis wanted to bring his sister (Martha/Magda??) to a Workcamp, but because of his mother beein sick they took him instead. I am not quite sure, but I think I remember that he did not come straight to Germany.
Very little information, I know but maybe it is a beginning....I do try to figure out a bit mor, therefore I do need to ask my family.
What about your history?
Hope to hear from you soon

greetings
Nadja

ps: where are you from?

Hi there, it is great to see your message. Please email me and we can exchange information. Our family is really into music as well, and I am also a stand up comedian in Canada. It would be great to contact each other via email to see if there is a connection in the family tree. Great to see your message on the board.

There is a guy on the show (in California), the show called "Dream Car Garage", and his last name is also Hnatiw. I just noticed the interesting name and looked it up. Since I noticed you had a thread on it I just thought you might find that interesting. :0)

Surnames: Hnatiw, Michaluk
Tom Hnatiw is my uncle.
That branch of the Hnatiw family is central-Canada-based, with him and his brother living in Ontario, and my dad (and their older brother until he died) living in Manitoba.
Their father died a long time ago and their mother (originally a Michaluk) died in 2002.
Both parents were born in Austria, but that's as much as I know.
