My great-grandmother was Mary Hnat (b. circa late 1870's-early 1880's;she married John Sedlak (b. circa 1876, d. 1920's)She was probably in the US sometime in the part of the century, as her husband John is buried in New Jersey. Mary Hnat was the daughter of Anna and John Hnat.

Not sure if this is your family but was your Joseph Hnat born in PA and he had a brother John also born in PA and their mother was Mary?

I have a 1891 marriage record of a Maria Hnat, daughter of John Hnat and Maria Szoroka to John Szedlak, son of Michael.

Dave,

Thanks for your response. The 1891 marriage record of Maria Hnat and John Szedlak that you have could very well be that of my Great-grandparents. The marriage date matches up with the birth years of their children (1892, 1897, and 1900), and I believe that my original estimate of John's year of birth (ca. 1876, which wouldn't work here) is incorrect. Can you tell me more about exactly what the document is that you have? By the way, my gr-grandparents were in all likelihood married in the Ujak(Udol)/Hajtovka area. I look forward to hearing from you.

Ray,

I have a copy of the parish marriage record of Ujak for the marriage of Maria Hnat and John Szedlak. Yes, they were married in Ujak. Maria the bride was a resident of Ujak and lived in house #39 and John the groom lived in house # 38 in Ujak.
Maria Hnat was the daughter of John and Maria Szoroka Hnat. They were both 24 years old when they married. John Szedlak was the son of Michael and Maria Fengya Szedlak. I also have a copy of the baptim record of John Szedlak, born 16 July 1867 and baptized 21 July. I also have a copy of 1862 marriage register of John's parents and they too were from Ujak My Hnat family came from a small village only 3 1/2 miles from Ujak.

Dave,

Again, thanks for your reply. This may be who I'm looking for. The only conflict I have is with the first name of Maria Hnat's mother (Maria). My records indicate that it was Anna, but I can't backup my information. The spelling of Szedlak is also different (Sedlak), but this may still be whom I'm looking for. Do you have anything on Maria and John Szedlak's children? I'm looking for John (b. 6 Aug 1892), Michael (b. 1897), and Mary (b. 18 Jun 1900). Look forward to hearing from you.

Ray

ps - are you the same Dave that e-mailed me on 8/27?

Hi Ray,

The spelling of Szedlak in the parish records is correct and it was probably Americanized or the family dropped the letter 'z'
to (Sedlak), that was a very common thing to do. I will try to find something for you on Maria and John Szedlak's children (John (b. 6 Aug
1892), Michael (b. 1897), and Mary (b. 18 Jun 1900).

I am the Dave that e-mailed you on 8/27.
