AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Dan “Dmytro” Hlywa, 90, peacefully entered into eternal life on Thursday, March 12, 2015, surrounded by his family.

Dan was the son of Michael and Rose Hlywa, and was born on Sept. 2, 1924, in a small village in Ukraine.
During the Nazi occupation of Ukraine during World War II, Dan was taken from his home from Ukraine to Germany to perform forced labor.
After the war, Dan immigrated to the United States in 1949 with his wife, Sonia, and their one-year-old son, Terry.
Sonia and Dan settled in the Mahoning Valley, a place that would remain his beloved home for the next 66 years.
Sonia and he became United States citizens in 1954.

Dan was first employed with the Hill Hubbell Company as a millwright, and later worked in a similar capacity with General Motors at the Lordstown, Ohio Plant, until he retired in 1988.
Since his retirement, he enjoyed home life and the pursuit of driving his wife, Sonia, crazy.

Dan was a devoted parishioner of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church and of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, and served as church councilman.
He was active with the church festivals and building committees.

Mr. Hlywa was proud of his Ukrainian heritage, and was a member of the Ukrainian Congress Committee and other Ukrainian organizations.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sonia; two sons, Terry “Taras” Hlywa of Austintown, Ohio,formerly of Yorba Linda, California, and Russell “Roman” (Michele) Hlywa of Winchester, Va.; a granddaughter, Lauren of Brookfield, Ohio; and a stepgrandson, Travis of Syracuse, New York.
Family and friends will keep his memory alive in their hearts forever, and may call on Monday March 16, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 North Meridian Road, Youngstown, Ohio.

Funeral services will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, and will continue at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.
Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, Ohio.
