My uncle, now deceased, gave me a little background. We were Slovakians.
His theory is that once the family might have come from Hlucin, a small town near Ostrava. My great grandfather George Jr.and his uncle Joseph spelled their name Hluchany. My great grandfather George Sr. was a woodworker and pattern maker (metal work) who lived in Helcmanovcen, located about 25 miles north of Kosice.
My grandfather's uncle lived in 10 miles to the south in Medzev. He never emigrated but his only son, also named Joseph, later immigrated to Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

My grandfather was also an only son, as far as is known. His sisters and mother died when he was quite young. His father remarried a woman with one child, a girl. In 1896 my great-grandfather emigrated, leaving the family behind, with the intention of bringing them over, which he finally did many years later. He ended up working for a stove manufacturer in Cleveland. In 1923 he vanished and was never heard from again. His wife remarried a man named Kubaco.
In 1899 my grandfather followed his father to America, traveling on a false purchased passport. He started out in Cuddy, Pennsylvania, and ended up in Colebrook.

If there is a relationship, it must go back to George Sr.'s generation or to one prior to that. On the other hand, it may be that several families that were originally from Hlucin ended up with surnames based on their place of origin.
