I have heard the name Hladun pronounced "Ladoon", like 'Lagoon' and "Huhladin", like Aladdin but with an 'H'...this is how I pronounce it. I think 'Ladoon' is the correct pronunciation though. It is Ukranian, and I believe it means 'one who is hungry'.

My grandfather was Harry Hladun and lived in New Jersey.

We pronounce our name "huhlaydin". My husband's father's name is John, brother's is Robert, cousin's is Richard and grandfather's was Nicholas - all these names have been mentioned. We are from upstate NY. We always look in the phone book when we are in another state to see if there are any other Hladuns.

Linda,

You mentioned your husband's father's name was John, and you are from upstate NY. Is that the John Hladun that owns or used to own the tree service in (at this time unnamed) central NY town? If so, that is my Grandfather's brother.

My father's name was Micheal Hladun (deceased). There are many Hladun families in western Canada, (Manitoba, Sask.) My father's great grandfather immigrated from the Ukraine to
a farm south of Verigin Sask. around 1900. We pronounce the name, Ladoon.

Both my parents were born Ukraine and came here with their
families I believe in the fifties. However my entire family
(unfortunately unlike myself) are fluent in Ukrainian and still
speak it almost on a daily basis. Anyway my point is that
people are telling you the mispronunciation of your last name. It is Hlah-doon. Accent is on the second syllable and
the H is NOT silent!!!!!!!!! It may not be easy for some but
you say the H and L together quickly.
It is such a rare name I would hate for you not to be using
it correctly.

Ha-lad-done is the pronuciation we use. Ukrainians use a lot of double consonants with the first letter taking on an Ha sound in Hladun or in Vladamir a Va sound. The origanal pronunciation however is Haladoon. At least that's what I've been told by my Ukrainian neighbor. I think I'm your Uncle Harry, your Grandfaters son. I live in the same old house in Manville Nj. I have a son Harry Hladun III who is in the Navy. He is presently stationed in Japan. He by the way told me of this site and your name.

I am your neice, Laura. Michael's daughter. My brother Michael did write the other one about the pronounciation. I was at your house. My husband is in the marine corps and just got to Iraq. I told him to keep an eye open for a navy hladun, your son Harry. Hope you are doing okay. Drop me a line uncle junny.

Love you,

Harry Hladun was my grandfather. I'm Mary's daughter. Do you have information on the family history? I would love to learn more, if you have anything to share.
