Hello, my mothers fathers family was from there but I have NO info on any of them except a name. I have been trying for a year to locate any info but I can find nothing. My mothers fathers name was Michael Hlad and his parents were John Hlad and Teresa Tunder. Michael was born in Cambridge, Oh and died near Detroit in 1954. My mother believes his parents lived somewhere in PA in the few yrs. after her birth (1944). We do know Michael had one sister and one brother thought to be named Stephan. Any clues???

Hlads?

I have no Hlad in my direct family but my father's cousin, Vaclav Navratil, married a Kristina Hlad in 1906 in Chicago. I believe Kristina had a sister Ruzena who married a Vaclav Barta as Vaclav and Kristina Navratil were godparents at their childs christening. This probably won't help you but who knows.

Forget to mention there was also a Marie Hlad (married to Josef Batista) in Chicago whose child was also the godchild of Vaclav Navratil and Kristina Hlad.

Thank you so much for your message!
Do you know where the Hlad family came from?
I understand most came from Slovakia.
Please reply, I am doing this for a friend who
has no computer.

From the 1920 census it shows that Kristina Hlad Navratil was born in Bohemia. It also shows a grandmother named Jossey (short for Josefa) Hlad living with them in Chicago. On the marriage records from St. Ludmilla Catholic church in Chicago it shows that she is from Suleberg or Sulcberg. I have checked on my map of the Czech Republic and Slovakia (which shows every little village) but there is no name like that. Kristina's father is listed as Jan Hlad and mother is Josefa Spurna, both from Suleberg/Sulcberg. Sorry that I can not give you more information. Good luck in your research. Kelli
