HUBBARD – Florence Shilling, 85, died Sept. 5, 2014, while sleeping at her Hubbard home.

“Flo” was born June 1, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) a daughter of Joseph and Mary Fekety Hiznay, and had lived in Hubbard, Ohio since 1959.

A 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown, Ohio.

Flo worked as a payroll clerk for five years at Scholl-Choffin Co. in Youngstown, where she met her husband, Gene.

. Never one to slow down, Flo began competing in local sports in her 50s and continued for many years.
She was a highly decorated Senior Olympian, having earned more than 300 medals for her performances in track and field events, as well as basketball shooting and table tennis.

Local event organizers once referred to her as a “local legend.”

Flo also competed in local road racing, often winning in her age group, and enjoyed golf, fondly recalling the time she beat her husband.

In recent years, Flo was active in the Border Queens of Ohio and Pennsylvania of the Red Hats Society and the Happy Wonderers of Corner House Christian Church.

She was a longtime member Delta Chi Epsilon Sorority and St. Patrick Church in Hubbard and also attended the First United Methodist Church in Hubbard.

She is survived by her husband, whom she married May 31, 1952; two sons, Kenneth (Karen) Shilling of Glenn Dale, Md., and Don (Amy) Shilling of Boardman; a daughter, Susan (Larry) Morrison of Batavia, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were brothers Theodore Hiznay, Jerome Hiznay and Cyril Hiznay and sisters Dorothy Hiznay, Ruth Libertine and Stella Craft.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home in Hubbard.
A Cursillo Bible vigil service will be held following calling hours at 7 p.m.
Closing prayers will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Guiding Eyes For the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Hubbard, OH. (Trumbull County)
