Here is what I found out about Eliza Poole and Charles William Henry Cater.
Eliza Poole is Elizabeth Poole who I believe is actually Elizabeth Hiscocks the mother of Henry Charles and Stephen James . She was 56 in the 1841 census which would have put her birth at about 1785. I found a marriage record for Elizabeth Hiscocks to a William Poole in 1828 and Elizabeth was listed as a widow. What also lead me to believe this was Elizabeth Hiscocks is that she is in the same residence as Stephan (her son) and the women listed under Elizabeth are her daughters and Henry Charles and Stephens sisters. Martha Cater is Martha Hiscocks and she married a Charles Cater and they had Charles William Henry Cater. The Mary is also a sister. She is Mary Ann Hiscocks who later married William Rickards.
It appears Martha Cater died sometime after the 1841 census and this is why Charles William Henry Cater is living with Eliza Fulcher in 1851. I believe Eliza was not married and took him in to raise him, she would have been an aunt by marriage. Martha Cater (Hiscocks) had actually been married once before to a Edwin Trotman and they had a daughter Emma. Emma is actually the witness at Mary Ann Hiscocks wedding and she is visiting Henry Charles and Mary in the 1851 census.
Probably more than you were looking for but I wanted to share what I found.
Leslie

How old was the Mary Hiscocks in the 1841 Census. The Eliza is interesting because that is a name that I see used again down the line. Henry William son of Henry WCharles had a daughter he named Eliza, maybe after the first Eliza??

I have Martha Shaw's death as Mar 29, 1890.

I would love to share more information.
Thanks

Richard
I believe we connected many years ago over the Hiscocks family. I have occasionally gotten the bug to look more into the history and I must say Ancestry.com has come a long way in the last 20 years. I have found a lot more information than I had in years past. My husband descends from Henry William Hiscocks (Martha Shaw) this would have been Edwin Fulcher I brother. I am trying to understand more about Walton Hurst cottages in Walton Hurst Lane, Eccleshall, Staffordshire where Henry William raised his family. They were farmers and I have a picture of Walton Hurst looked like but I am trying to determine if they owed the whole house or if there were individual units (houses) that shared walls. I have attached a picture maybe you can help me understand how these houses (cottages) were setup. On another note these are the children I have found for EF Hiscocks and Jane - Fredrick William 1875, Winifred Gwendoline 1890, Florence Mary, 1876, Ethel Gertrude 1879, Amy Fulcher 1874, Jenny Louisa, 1882, Charles Edwin Fulcher 1883-1954
Best Regards
Leslie

his wife's maiden name was Rudge, not Luther, who was her stepfather in a rather roundabout way. After Hester's mother died, her father, Edward Rudge, married a Bridget Sadler. He died in 1640 and Bridget then married Anthony Luther. To make things even more complicated, one of Luther's sons by a previous marriage (Richard) married one of his new stepdaughters (Rebecca Rudge).

According to the 1851 & 1881 census, Henry Charles Hiscock was a Messenger to the Master of the Horse Dept. for the Queen and they lived in the Royal Mews. My ancestor is Joseph Shaw who was brother of Martha Shaw. Joseph came to Canada 1901-11 and settled north of Toronto in Rama Twsp. Can you tell me where and when Martha Shaw Hiscock died?
Can anyone tell me who the parents are for Charles William Henry Cater born in 1838 and is in the 1841 household of Eliza Poole with Mary Hiscock and Martha Cater. Next door is Stephen Hiscock, baker, and his wife, Caroline (nee Poole). He was the brother of Henry Charles Hiscock son of Charles and ELizabeth. On the 1851 census, CWH Cater is lodging with Eliza Fulcher who was a sister of Mary Fulcer-Hiscocok =, wife of Henry Charles.
Alfred Anna (or Frances) Hiscocks - Ohio - 1880 - 1932

Hi!

I am attempting to locate further information on Alfred and Anna or Frances Hiscock and their children. According to the 1900 Ohio Census they emigrated to the United States in 1880. Alfred was originally from England and Anna (or Frances depending on the record you are looking at) was originally from Wales. Alfred was born about 1842 and Anna was born about 1838. They reportedly had 12 children but only 3 were surviving in 1900. One of their children was TOM Hiscock. He was born in Wales in 1874. A variant spelling of the name is HISCOX. Anna (or Frances) died 17 March 1905 in Silver Creek, Medina County, Ohio. Alfred died 24 November 1932 in Medina, Medina County, Ohio. Any further information on this group would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Good luck in your own searches!

Cherre errehc@aol.com

My great-great grandfather was Henry Hiscock of Christchurch, Hampshire, UK. He was born 9/1/1829. Married Elizabeth Hooker (b.6/8/1831) on 12/25/1850. They emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1874. Elizabeth died in 1875. Henry died in 1911. I only know that Henry's father's name was John (b. 1794) and his mother Elizabeth ?? (b. 1795). In 1871 John and Elizabeth were living in the town of Stanpit (near Christchurch). I have no information regarding when John or Elizabeth died or whether they had any children other than Henry (there may have been a George). Do John or Henry belong to your family tree?

Hiscocks in England

I am the daughter of Elizabeth Pearl Hiscocks Harrington,a 94 year old daughter of Percy Edwin Hiscocks who was born on May 27,1882 in Canada or in England and died in Wheeling WV May 27,1959. His mother was born in England and immigrated to Canada with her children. She may have travelled with her husband and have been widowed in Canada. She and two of her children (Percy and Robert) later immigrated to Wheeling WV when my grandfather was about 7. She left an older son, whose name I believe to have been George, in Canada to work on a farm on "the prairies." My mother once said that my grandfather never completely forgave his mother for that, even though he was respectful and cared for her in her old age.
My mother is in a nursing home and unable to clarify these details. I am new to this genealogy pursuit, but I am most interested in your message. One thing that stands out is the familiarity of the surnames, as well as the time frame. My mother's youngest of two sisters was Florence Mae Hiscocks. The older was Frances Hazel. There were other relatives in the Toronto Canada area in a neighborhood that is now part of the suburbs of Toronto. When my mother visited there as a child it was a separate town called "Streetsville." Mother spoke of an Uncle George and Aunt Sadie. In the mid '50's I met a second cousin named Jack Hiscocks who visited us.He had two little girls and my mother commented that the name would probably "die out." There were no male heirs to my grandfather so the name is gone in Wheeling. I always look for the name in phone books, and was shocked to find it on the Ancestry.com message board. Hoping to hear from you again...Ann Lauer

Harry:

My mom is a Hiscocks from Iowa. I have been seeing your messages here for a few months. I have also been in contact with Richard Collingridge, who as you know, has been very helpful in tracing the family in England. My mom is the grandaughter of Robert Upson Hiscocks (1878-1916), brother of Edwin Fulcher Hiscocks (1873-1954). She is one of 11 children, born to Robert Hupson Hiscocks (1906-1953) and Mavis Leone Rapp. All 11 children were born in Britt, Iowa. There are plenty of Hiscocks in that area today. If you run across pictures of those mentioned above, I would be most interested in hearing more. Regards, Kevin from Minnesota

Hi Kennalee.....after reading your note I have been looking through some pictures I have.... and I have many pictures of Grace. I remember going to their home in Casey as a young boy and always enjoying my time with her. I never knew E.F. (Ted) Hiscocks. But have many fond memories of Grace.

I have a picture of a young girl and on the back it says this picture is labeled "My sister Ethel Smith"..but I think this is Grace Bell Smith. I have no idea who wrote that on the picture. It sure looks like Grace..but then..I never saw her sister.

I have a picture of Mr and Mrs. Lewis Conley Bishop.....says it's Grace Hiscocks grandparents.

I have one of Sarah and Dwight Smith..says he's Grace's brother. Another one that says...Mr.and Mrs. Artemus Dwight Smith..married July 1st, 1889 with their first born,Chester Sherman Smith.

A picture of Grace's brother Roy Smith and family. Don't know if any of these are some you would like. Please feel free to e-mail me and let me know. I would be happy to make copies and mail to you.

thanks for your note...
harry hiscocks.

Edwin (1873-1954) Hiscocks' wife Grace Belle Smith was a sister of my g-grandfather, Sylvetus Smith. If you are interested, I have information on her ancestors. Also if any of the pictures you have are of her, I would definately be interested in seeing them if possible. Thanks!

Hi Richard, my family are from Frombe in Somerset and my greatgrandfather was called Henry Hiscocks and he lived in Sun Street. I do have some info somewhere I can dig out if you like, its seems some of our relatives were butchers and lived in Frombe for some time. To my knowledge there aren't many Hiscocks' left there but I believe one works for Somerset Council and I think his name is Peter

To Jody Ramgren
I found your message in searching for Ramgren name. Are you also researching your surname?

Also, in my search for my Bradley ancestors, I found a site on the Hitchcock family (www.couchgenweb.com/family/hitch-3.htm) that had a John Hiscockes/Hitchcock (1586-1629) which I was able to connect to through Reuben Bradley, wife, Elizabeth Nash. There were no sources cited, but I noticed that the place in England was the same--ALLCanninings Wiltshire. Any connection?
Thanks Rebecca Ott from Rochester, NY

John (b c 1592) & William (b 1601) HITCHCOCK, of Preshute, Wiltshire

I'm working on pre-1850 Irish HITCHCOCK(E)s, some of whom apparently descended from HITCHCOCKs who came from Preshute, Wiltshire.

I've found two brothers: John (b c 1592) and William (b 1601). The former had at least one son: George. The latter had two sons (among other children): William and Edward.

The elder William HITCHCOCK was a Cromwellian Adventurer and a Merchant Tailor. His will was proved in 1661. His wife's maiden name was Hester Luther.

I wonder if this family is connected to your Richard HISCOCKES?

I've posted additional details on the Vocal@Local Boards for Counties Dublin and Laois.

Carl Strand
West Los Angeles

Hiscocks in Somerset

Hi all -

I wonder if anyone has any information about my ancestor?

He was Henry Charles Hiscocks (the family also seem to have used Hiscock and Hiscox) born about 1815 at Frome in Somerset. He was a royal servant at Buckingham Palace. Family tradition has it that he was "a descendant of Baron Delamere of Nunney Castle, Froome, Somerset" (the castle was built by the Delameres in the fourteenth century).

I've found a few occurrences of Hiscox and Hiscocks at Nunney during the 18th century, but have not been able to connect them to Henry. I have found one possible baptism for him at Frome in 1815 - Henry Charles Hiscox, son of Charles Hiscox and Elizabeth.

Does any of this sound at all familiar?

Many thanks for any help,

Richard Collingridge

Hi all....My father has just passed, and he left me this book with names and pictures of our family. I came across this site and I'm not sure if any of this info may be of help to anyone, but here's a brief of some of the names I have. Harry Charles Hiscocks (1819-1901)was sect. to the Queen Victoria. Henry William Hiscocks and wife Nell. I have a copy of entry of birth for a Edwin Fulcher (son..born in 1873 in Duckington England) to Henry Hiscocks (farmer)and Martha Hiscocks (maiden name Shaw) I have a United States of America certificate of naturalization cert. from the state of Iowa for Edwin Hiscocks of England dated the 29th day of Sept. 1896. It says he came to the U.S. at the age of 16 and is now 21 years of age. I have a picture of Martha (Shaw) Hiscocks..Edwin's mother. I have a wedding picture of Elza Hiscocks and Bob Hoole. One of Nell and Francis Hiscocks (Lawton) at Nell's home. I have other pictures also. I thought this may be of help to someone out there looking. I came from Iowa and now live in California.

Harry -

I've had a bit more time to look at your message properly...

I had not realised that there were two Edwin Fulcher Hiscockses!

Your Edwin is the nephew of my ancestor. I had not spotted him before, because in the 1881 census he seems to be down as Edward. My Edwin is another son of Henry Charles H.

Had you seen the entry in the IGI, which must be for your Edwin?

Edwin Fulcher Hiscock [the s is missing - as it is also for my ancestor in 1881 census] married Grace Belle Smith at Samuel Smith's, Near Lewis, Cass, Iowa, US on 27 October 1898.

I had been puzzling over this, as my 2-greats grandfather was in his fifties by then, with wife and several children, and it did seem unlikely that he'd upped sticks to the colonies - but the similar name had to be connected.

I have a good deal of ancestry for Martha Shaw - she was a cousin to my Edwin's wife (Jane or Jenny Whittle), so if you are descended from the Iowa Edwin, you and I are cousins twice over.

E-mail me off-list & I'll send you what I have: richard@collingridge.net

Is the Eliza Hiscocks you have the Eliza who was sister to your Edwin? Or perhaps his daughter in America?

Have you seen Henry Charles Hiscocks's entry in the 1881 census? He had two grandsons living with him, both aged ten (twins?) and born at Duckington - presumably HWH's youngest sons. There are also Hiscocks living at Osborne Cottage on the Isle of Wight, which is next door to Osborne House, Queen Vic's "small holiday home" - coincidentally, it's only 20 miles or so from where I live in the New Forest.

Exciting...

Regards,

Richard

Hiscocks in London: Henry Charles Hiscocks (m 1836), Edwin Fulcher Hiscocks (b 1846), Fred W Hiscocks (b 1875)

My great grandfather, Harvey Collingridge, married Florence (Flo) Mary Hiscocks (1876 - 1936). She was a daughter of Edwin Fulcher Hiscocks and Jane Whittle.

I have found these people on the 1881 British census, living at Islington in London (entered as Hiscock, but I'm sure this is an error). Edwin Hiscocks was a "Wholesale Drapery Warehouseman". At that time Flo had three siblings:

Amy P, born about 1874
Fred W, born about 1875
Ethel G, born about 1879

There may of course have been later children, and also earlier ones who'd died.

Jane's mother Elizabeth (maiden name unknown, born in Chester) was also living with them.

Have you a connection to this family?

I have also found the marriage of Henry Charles Hiscocks and Mary Fulcher in London in 1836 - it seems likely that these were Edwin's parents.

Any information gratefully received.

Richard Collingridge.

Fred W(illiam) Hiscocks

Hi Gavin

I'm afraid my Fred is definitely a different person - the 1881 census gives him and all his siblings as being born at Islington, Middlesex - if you want to look it up, they were living at Fairwood, Holly Park, Crouch Hill, Islington, Middlesex.

However, Fred's grandfather (whom I am now sure was the Henry Charles Hiscocks I mentioned) was born at Frome, Somerset. He and his wife were royal servants (on the census he's to be found in the Royal Mews, Hanover Square, as a "Messenger C S"). Our family records state that he was descended from "Baron Delamere, of H[something] Castle, Froome, Somerset" (I don't know if Froome is an alternative spelling or an error, but anyway the place is pronounced Froom to rhyme with loom).

In the census there are numerous Hiscockses in the Frome area. I've also noticed that Edwin is relatively common with the Hiscocks/Hiscock/Hiscox surname.

Therefore, I feel sure we must be cousins... Now we just have to pin down the connection!

Incidentally, in the census I have found a person called Henry William Hiscocks, whom I think is Edwin's brother. He is living in Cheshire, married to Edwin's wife's cousin, who was from that area. Charles Hiscocks has two grandsons living with him at the census who seem to be children of this family.

I have lots more information about the Cheshire family (Shaw), but I'm afraid very little more about the Hiscocks side.

Please e-mail off list: richard@collingridge.net.

Regards,

Richard
