Doris L. Currie, 89, of 144 Greenhurst Village Dr., died at 10:47 p.m. Thursday (January 22, 2009) in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.

An area resident for the past 25 years, she was born January 20, 1920, in Gowanda, N.Y., a daughter of the late Levant M. and Cora Lee Clarke Himelein.

She was a graduate of Gowanda High School and earned her bachelors degree from Fredonia State College and her masters degree in education from Oneonta State College.

Before her retirement she was a school teacher for the Richfield Springs, N.Y., School District for over 30 years. She began her teaching career as a music teacher and later became an elementary school teacher where she taught first grade.

She attended the St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Jamestown and while living in Richfield Springs was the church organist and choir director for the St. John's Episcopal Church. She also played the organ for her church while living in Venice, Fla.

She and her husband enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida. She loved to spend time playing bridge and enjoyed traveling. She and her husband traveled extensively in the 50 states and throughout Europe.

Surviving is her husband of almost 65 years, Andrew G. Currie, whom she married February 14, 1944, two daughters: Sandra L. Brogan of Reston, Va., and Sue Currie Tarplee of Greenwood, Ind., a son Drew G. Currie of Denver, Colo., six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Levant and James Himelein.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, in the St. Luke's Episcopal Church Chapel. The Rev. Eric M. Williams, rector, will officiate. Inurnment will be in the St. Lukes Episcopal Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service in the under-croft of the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake Road, Mayville, NY 14757.
