Dear Pat,
I found the military document I was referring to in my original note. Apologies if none of this is relevant to your research but some of the details may help. John Hewitt joined the Limerick City Royal Garrison Artillery on 19th April 1902. His occupation was "groom" and he was born in the parish of St.Michael's. He gave his age as 17 years and 10 months. He was Roman Catholic. He was discharged in 1909. His father was William Hewitt. According to his military attestation form, he had a younger brother by the name of Simon and an older sister named Bridget. They all lived at 7 White's Lane, off Nelson Street, Limerick City. John Hewitt's mother was Ellen Hewitt. I believe she is my great great aunt. Her maiden name was Madigan. I have seen the marriage cert for William Hewitt and Ellen Madigan. On the marriage cert it lists their father's names but unfortunately I can't remember what was written there. I can check again if you want. I think they were married around 1869. Their first child was born in 1871. Three children are listed on familysearch.org for this couple. Ellen Madigan was the daughter of Jeremiah Madigan and Hanora Scanlan. She was baptised at St.Michael's RC church on 3rd Septmber 1846. She had numerous brothers and sisters. I have their details if you are interested. A Jeremiah Madigan was listed as living on Nelson Street around 1850. I hope this helps. Let me know if anything rings a bell with your research. A couple of days ago I sent off for the death cert for an Hanora Madigan who died in 1895 aged 80 in Limerick. This could be the Hanora Madigan who is listed above but I'll have to wait and see what the cert says to be sure.
