According to my findings , Mary Louise Hesser (Wyrick) and Henry J. Wyrick are my gggrandparents. Mary Louise Hessers parents are Charles Hesser and Caroline Hesser. They were both born in Germany. I am guessing that Nicholas Hesser is Charles brother? I have not gone down the Hesser line. Charles was born 1817 Saxony, Germany. Caroline Hesser was born 1822 Saxony as well. I hope this helps.

Just checking in. Did you ever find anything more on Samuel Hesser? I stumbled on a couple of things in the Virginia Chancery records. Andrew's estate and some Caylor stuff. If you respond to this message I will post my encrypted email address. I still can't prove who Samuel's parents are, but some info is better than nothing, I guess.

In Peter Hesser's obituary it states that he was the father of 13 children. He did have three marriages. The first to Minerva Rouch believed to be around 1830 in perhaps Wyandot County, Ohio. I believe Herman is the son of Minerva and Peter. He was born around 1830 and Peter did not marry Mary Ann Hahn/Horn until 1832 or 1833.

I also found last week what could be another child of Peter and Hannah Hannan Hesser. On the 1860 Mortality schedule for Rock Island County, Illinois there is listed a 4 year old boy named Jacob Hesser who died in Drury Township, Rock Island County in August 1859 of Scarlet Fever. Jacob was born around 1855 in Ohio. In 1860 the only Hesser's listed in the 1860 Drury County census was Peter and Hanna and their family. . There is a five year gap between Deliah "Lulu" and Mary Elizabeth.

There is also the possibility that little Jacob could have been the son of Herman and Therese Maxson Hesser. They were married in Mercer County, Illinois on 13 Oct 1850. During the 1860 census they were living in Buffalo Prairie Township of Rock Island County.

The 1784 Tax List taken by Farling Ball included Andrew Hesser (son) below Conrod Hesser - perhaps the only proof I'll be able to find linking father to son, since there was no will. They only paid '1' unit (of tobacco?), instead of 1 each. The thought is that Andrew was b. 9 May 1762 in Germantown, but I have not found any hard proof of that. Any help on that would be greatly appreciated! I intend to establish J. Conrad Hesser as a DAR Patriot via Patriotic Service, since he paid the Supply Tax of 1783.
Hi! Thanks for the information on Peter Hesser. I haven't been online in a while but I am going to make sure my information on Peter Hesser/Hannah Hannan is up-to-date. It's a mystery lost to the ages how Hannah Hannan met a man from Iowa when the rest of her family ended up settling in Michigan after they moved from New York state.

Karen Dickerson Miller
According to Peter Hesser's obituary from the Rock Island Argus on 3 April 1890, Peter was married 3 times. He married Miss Minerva Rouch in Wyandotte County, Ohio, but she lived only a few months. Peter also had a son by the name of Herman Rouch Hesser, born around 1830 in Ohio. I have seen his middle name spelled as Rouse. I believe Herman may be the child of this marriage.

His second marriage was to Mary Ann Hahn (Horn) in Wyandotte County sometime between 15 Jan 1832 and 17 Jan 1833. I have found references to both dates. Mary Ann and Peter moved to Muscatine, Iowa in 1834. They had three children and Mary Ann died about 31 Jan 1839.

He married for the third time on 12 Dec 1839 at Wyoming Hill, Muscatine County, Iowa Territory, Miss Hannah Hannan.

My husband is a direct descendant from John Conrad Hesser and Sarah Adrian, through Andrew Hesser and Eleanor Shaw, and then Andrew Hesser and Emeline McKune, and their daughter Mary Louise Hesser and Oscar Simon Martin.

I have recently retrieved from my mother-in-law in Muscatine, Iowa her genealogy research. I have been consolidating and sorting through three large notebooks and several files all information on the Hesser family from Crawford County and Jefferson County, Ohio into Rock Island and Mercer Counties in Illinois and Muscatine and Jefferson and Washington Counties in Iowa.

Let me know what information you are after and I probably have it or can provide you with family group sheets and some documentation. I also have copies of some marriage records and have several land records for Peter Hesser.

I found out about Anna Hesser and the Coffman-Orr cemetery from someone who found a photo of the cemetery in the Fayette County Ohio Library. The photo had 7 stones and she sent me the names. That gave me Henry Snider as well and he is also my ancestor. I lost contact with the person who sent me that info. Her email doesn't bounce back, I just no longer get an answer. Another cousin visited the location of Coffman-Orr with the current owner of that farm.
Hi Martha,
Sorry you can't find those other recent messages - one was incorrect, so another one was to correct it. I had thought that the Chancery Court was about Johan Conrad Hesser's estate, but it was his son Andrew Hesser's land that 2 heirs wanted to force their siblings to sell. No big deal. What a great thing that VA site is - I found info about Phillip March there, too! 65 pages, in fact! Helped me learn another child's name and that he at least lived until 1799, if not 1802.

The Fayette lady said their only newspapers for 1833 were for Nov and Dec; we think Hannah Hesser died at age 96 in March 1833. So, didn't get an obit.
Laurel

Hi I was just wonder if you ever made any progress on Samuel who m. Elizabeth Caylor. I stumbled on a reference to Samuel and Elizabeth in the on line Virginia Chancery records for Peter "Etcher".
There is also an estate record for Andrew, son of Johann Conrad and one for Andrew's son, John who m. Lydia Marks. Just wonder if you have seen this book. I have not, but some names and locations look familiar:
"The James Quinn family, 1781-1981, Pa., Ohio, Ind., Nebr., beyond: sidelines, Phillips, Curtis, Bishop, Hesser, Fleming" by Horace W. (Horace Westlyn) Quinn. 1982. Andrew had a daugter who married a Queen and that name is sometimes spelled Quinn. I know they moved to Ohio.

On Hesser Genforum there is an old reference to Andrew's estate, which names the other children. There is a lot of good info on Hesser Genforum. Some is not correct, but there is a lot that is good info. They are pulling the plug on Genforum and it will be read only after September.
Catherine Caylor’s estate names Elizabeth and Samuel Hesser. This was Catherine Etcher (daughter of Peter Oatyer of Loudoun, VA, who m. one Jacob Caylor.
This Catherine and Jacob Caylor is sometimes confused with a Catherine Snider who m. a different Jacob Caylor. Catherine Snider was the daughter of Henry Snider and Elizabeth Hesser. Catherine Snider Caylor was mentioned in Henry Snider’s estate. She then m. Robert Burnett jr. and there is an interview with them when they were still alive that mentions Catherine’s grandmother Anna “Hess” (should have been Hesser.)
I am descended from Henry Snider and Elizabeth Hesser Elizabeth m. a Quaker, John Doster after Henry died and was on the 1850 and 1860 census with daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Orr. All three are buried in the Sugar Grove Cemetery and linked on find a grave. I have yet to get my hands on the Hesser wills in Virginia. I do have the estate for Henry's father, William Snider, who d. 1799 in Loudoun, so I know that such things exist. I am still trying to find the parents of Samuel Hesser, who showed up in Fayette County about the same time as Elizabeth. I think he could be another child of Johan Conrad and Elizabeth, but more likely a grandson. I lost contact with the Samuel descendent I was working with, but still would like to know.

Some kids, such as Elizabeth Hesser Snider Doster lived past the 1850 census, which gives the place of birth and some grand kids were still alive in 1880 and gave their parent's place of birth. However, some answers are either wrong or contradict each other. Elizabeth says she was b. MD one year, but other locations do not agree. I think a study of all of the kids and grandkids could at least come up with the most likely locations. People did move and visit back and forth between MD and Loudoun, VA, so MD is not a stretch, but that location only appeared one time. There is quite a bit posted on the Genforum for Hesser about the children of Conrad and Anna. In 1800 census Henry and Elizabeth Snider were living in Fayette County, PA with two of the Hesser brothers. Pat Duncan has done a lot of research in Loudoun and posted militia Tax lists for Hesser and Snider on Genforum. On on entry H'ry Snider was living with Andrew Hesser. The Militia Tax lists provide an approximate date for when people arrived in Loudoun county and when they left. Apparently no one has found any church records for Hesser in Pennsylvania where the lived before they came to Loudoun, VA.

Obituary of Peter Hesser 1810 OH -1890 IL

The Rock Island (IL) Argus; 3 April 1890; Obituary of Peter Hesser:
SUDDEN DEATH
Peter Hesser Found Dead in his Yard---The Inquest and Other Facts.
Foster, April 3 -- Peter Hesser, an old resident of Drury township, was found dead in his feed lot on Tuesday. He was out to vote in the morning feeling as well as usual, and he ate his dinner and went out to do some chores. In about fifteen minutes his wife found him dead. John E Wray held an inquest, and the verdict was that he died of heart disease. The deceased was 80 years, 2 months and 23 days old. He was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, and was married to Miss Minerva Rouch of Wyndotte county, Ohio, who lived but a few months. His second marriage was to Miss Mary Ann Horn [sic - Hahn or Hohn], of the same county. In 1834 he moved to Muscatine county, Iowa, then a territory, and laid a claim to quarter section of land, in what is now known as Sweetland township. He ran the ferry known as the Ball of Wyoming ferry to the Illinois City landing. His wife died leaving him with three children. In 1837 [sic - 1839], at Wyoming Hill, Muscatine Co., he married Miss Hannah Hannan. In 1840 he sold his farm and moved to Lynn [sic - Linn] Co., Ia, but he only lived there a short time when he moved back to Ohio. Being dissatisfied there he soon returned to Rock Island Co., where he resided up to this time. He was the father of thirteen children. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Baptist church and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place today at one o'clock P.M.

I would very much like to exchange information on this Hesser family - a tangled web, to be sure. I live directly north of Muscatine Co., IA and across the river from Rock Island Co., IL. Another Hesser researcher in this area would be great as a day trip companion to do on-site research with me.

Hi Martha!
So glad you answered! I saw your posts from years ago. I descend from Johann Conrad's son Andrew who m. Hannah Warner, then via their daughter Mary Hesser who m. Samuel George Queen abt 1785 in Loudoun, but I can't find records to prove that.

My goal is to establish JC Hesser as a DAR Patriot. To that end, I need proof where his children were born, etc. Conrad qualifies because he paid the 1783 Property Tax to Loudoun Co, VA - counts as Patriotic Service since part of it was used to fund the War.

People on Ancestry and the various Hesser books say Conrad's kids were b Germantown, Philadelphia Co, PA --- I searched the PA Archives and Germantown Luth church records but could not find those records. Any idea where to obtain that info?
Laurel

I also descend directly from this line. I think that Anna/Hannah Hesser d Mar 1833 in Fayette Co, OH and is buried at the Coffman Orr Cemetery. She was living with daughter Elizabeth who m. Henry Snider. He is buried there, too. Elizabeth remarried, but I'm not sure to whom. The Anna Hesser buried there was b 1737. Would make her our girl.

As to the will in Loudoun Co, VA, have you read it? Could it be the daughter of Conrad and Anna, who was also named Anna? I don't know whom she married.
Search Public Member Trees for Elizabeth Caylor b 4 May 1810 Fayette, OH, m. Samuel Hesser. There are people who have her. Some confusion about whom she married - probably 2 women born around same time who each m. different guys. There are photos of tombstones and a portrait. One tree shows Samuel as son of John Hesser b 1785 PA - looks like he is a descendant of Frederick Hesser. I saw Frederick Hesser while researching Johan Conrad Hesser. They may be related, but I didn't find proof; the age difference is 11 years.

Do you have a copy of that book with the interview? DAR might accept that as establishing proof of death place and age for Anna Hesser.

Are you in the DAR? If not, do you want to be?

I searched at Wash DC DAR Library and my local genie library's PA Archives - could not find proof they were b. Germantown. I did find a court list where JC Hesser purchased a book from a forfeited estate in 1778 in Germantown, Philadelphia Co, PA. That establishes a residence, at least at that time. The following year, he paid tax in Loudoun Co, VA. Kids were most likely b. PA.

Hi Martha!
That is a fantastic find! The Andrew mentioned is Andrew Hesser, Jr, b abt 1799 - Dad died about 1807. Perhaps this is from a sale of Dad's land, since the siblings - Lucinda, Elizabeth, Mary, Nancy, Sarah, John and David are mentioned. No mention of siblings Jonathan, Emaline Amanda or Cornelia - the girls may have died but Jonathan lived til 1876. I thought that Lucinda married Thomas Morris and that Nancy m. Thomas Poulton, according to VA Marriage Index. Hmmm. The Samuel Quinn mentioned is my GGG Grandfather, Samuel George QUEEN. Often, Quinn was substituted for Queen. (This helps me with my Jonah Queen case - maybe he really did get bounty land from VA in Columbiana Co, OH! There was a John Quinn from Loudoun Co VA who applied for it, got it in Columbiana Co, etc).
I will order this case from VA --- Thanks for posting it!
Laurel
OOOPS. I discovered that there are other pages to be seen on your link to VA Chancery Court - yes, the heirs mentioned are Andrew Hesser's children, not Johan Conrad Hesser's children. Sorry for that mistake.

I wonder if it is actually the land/property of Johan Conrad Hesser that Andrew is suing over - the siblings would be heirs. If their mom Hannah did die in Mar 1833, she might have directed them to sell the land, etc.

How do I see Hesser Genforum? Have to wait until Sept?
Laurel
