We now have a number of Harrimans tested and have established several different lines. We are especially interested in anyone thought to be descended from Shadrack Harriman, as there are several unconnected lines all thought to be descended from him. Y-DNA may prove or disprove the connection. Contact hfa@harriman-family.org

I'm looking for info on the ancestors of Mary Harriman (or Herriman). She was born in 1830 in Maine (one census says Prospect, Maine). She married James M. Nevens (or Nevins), who was from New Hampshire. The 1870 and 1880 censuses have them living in Bucksport, Maine. Any info on the Nevens or Nevins family is also greatly appreciated.

(Cross-posted to Herriman, Nevens, and Nevins lists.)

Thanks very much in advance.

Jen Tait

In 1815, the county seat was in Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tenn, so that is where their marriage records are.
Any information of parents for either Lewis or Nancy in that area will be soooo helpful!!
Thanks,
Pat
in OK

Patricia, Thanks so much for posting the marriage notice for Jacob Beever and Betsey Harriman. It all helps. I will try to trace their children further, based on your suggestions. It has taken me a bit to catch up on emails due to the power outage up here, thanks to T.S. “Irene”! The marriage date of 24 Feb 1831 for Jacob Beever and Betsey Harriman makes more sense than the one cited by another researcher some years back to our former HFA historian, which was 14 Feb 1854 and not sourced.

Lynn Olson's finding of a Michael Beaver in connection with the Harrimans in Fountain Co. IN is also interesting... have you any records of a Michael Beaver related to Jacob Beaver?

There's a lovely death notice for 6Hannah (Eastman) Merrill, daughter of 5Richard Eastman and widow of Joshua Merrill of No. Conway, NH, in the NEHGS Register for Oct 1876 (pg. 488) which you can get to thru Google Books online, if you haven't seen that. Or I can reproduce it for you. If you want to email me directly, go to the Harriman Family Association website and look for my email under the officers listing. The notice for Hannah (Eastman) Merrill includes info on her father and grandfather.

What is your source for linking Hannah Eastman, wife of Philip Harriman, as a daughter of Richard Eastman? I have done no research on her parents so this is new to me and I wondered if you had a good source for it (I can cite you and your source in the HFA database but I can't cite or use PAF citations as they are usually not backed up by sources).

I extracted the tax lists of Conway NH from the original record books (in summer I live in NH about an hour south of Conway) years ago and found that Moses and Lucretia (Harriman) Harriman lived in Conway and were polled there from 1792 right up to 1816, so it appears that his children were probably all born in Conway NH, unless he was in Maine between 1816 and 1818, and Betsey was born during that time frame - her age is all over the place in censuses. It appears Moses Harriman sold out his Conway land and then is found in 1818 in Knox Co. IL, claiming the bounty land of his deceased son, Jonathan Harriman. He is most likely the Moses Herriman in Butler Co. OH in 1820 (his son Philip is also found that year in Butler Co. OH) and then he moved to Montgomery Co. IN where he is found in censuses 1830 thru 1850. We have no death date for Moses or Lucretia (Harriman) Harriman - Lynn Olson has done a search of Indiana and Minnesota records and not found deaths for them. Perhaps sometime we'll find them on a site like FindaGrave.

It is very likely that Betsey/Elizabeth R. (Harriman) Beaver is a daughter of Moses and Lucretia (Harriman) Harriman, but she makes it tough to want to make that a firm connection with her census listings! Based on the early censuses, Moses Harriman had 2 daughters (names unknown) born between 1810 and 1820 and one of them could have been Betsey/Elizabeth. I was hoping to trace the Beaver children - somewhere there may be a local history book with a story about one of them that mentions origins of Jacob and Elizabeth. We always have the hope that we’ll stumble on more info somewhere!

Moses' grandfather, Richard Eastman, first settled in Pembroke, NH by 1768 and then removed to Conway,NH. He purchased an interest in a mill lot and moved to Lovell, Maine. Most of his children settled in Conway and adjoining towns. He is probably the reason the Harrimans moved to this area. Some of the family moved into Maine after a time.

This is the only Maine connection I have. Phillip Harriman's wife was Hannah Eastman, and Moses Harriman had a reasonable reason to go to Maine for a while.

I have a photocopy of this record if you would like it. It states: Beever, Jacob [to] Betsey Harriman [on] 2-24-1831

It is from "Index to Early Marriage Records of Montgomery Co, Indiana, 1823 to 1860; Books 1-5, Revised 1985.

Jacob Beaver was a shoemaker and I have never found where he owned any land. His first wife died and left him with two or three small children.

I have been able to trace all of Elizabeth's children except Eliza Jane. David born 1845 was in the Civil War and died 1862. The C Beaver in the 1860 Census is my great-Grandfather, Christian V, Born 1850 in Indiana. Thomas Jefferson was also in the Civil War. The Civil War records stated both he and David were born in Fountain County. Patricia

Hi You sent your message to me Lynn Olson not Patricia. But I would like to comment on her research. I too had trouble following her line but I did find something interesting. In an old tract map of Cain Township Fountain County, Indiana is a plot of land owned in part by Francis Harriman brother to Moses. The second part of the land is owned by Michael Beaver dated 1836. I am wondering if some of her information is from Fountain County.

Re: Moses and Lucretia Harriman

Patricia, I have been reading your genweb and ancestry posts on Elizabeth (Herriman) Beaver. She is difficult to trace because her census listings are so odd and nothing is known of her after the 1880 census listing in Linn co. MO, where she is identified as the mother-in-law of Napoleon B. Strode/Stroud who is married to Ann M. [Beaver]. I noted you had found a marriage record in Montgomery Co. IN for Elizabeth and Jacob Beaver dated 24 Feb 1831. I have been unable to trace the other children of Elizabeth and Jacob Beaver as found in the 1860 census of Lewis Co. MO (Thomas, E.J. [perhaps Eliza Jane, who married Albert C. Willis in Lewis Co. MO in 1862], David and C. Beaver). That 1860 census is an odd one - it states Elizabeth Beaver was born in Maryland c. 1819, which is at odds with the censuses of 1870 and 1880. Can you please tell me exactly what the marriage record (exact spellings) you found in Montgomery Co. IN between Jacob and Elizabeth states? There are many Elizabeth Harrimans born in Maine between 1812-1819, but based on the 1880 census, she states her father was born in PA. That is very odd. Few people would have migrated from PA to Maine at that time but I guess anything is possible! I also have copies of your recent Family Group Record sheets, given to me by Phyllis Moore. I can confirm much of what you have listed as research. Per census studies, Moses and Lucretia (Harriman) Harriman had at least 3 daughters between about 1795 and 1815 who are as yet unknowns. But they lived in NH, not Maine, though the area they lived in was right on the Maine border. Happy hunting! SueB./Harriman Family Associatioin archivist

My Jacob Beaver and wife Betsey Harriman cannot be found in the 1850 Census, but I believe them to be in Illinois with a large group of family who moved at that time. I do find them in 1860 in Dickerson, Monticello, Missouri. Jacob, El, three sons and twin daughters. Also in 1870 Census in Brookfield, Linn, Missouri: Jacob age 70 and Elizabeth 58 living next to one of the twins, Ann Marie Strode and family. In 1880 Elizabeth is a widow and living with the Napoleon Strode family in Brookfield, Linn, MO.

IN. I have been to the Montgomery Co. Library and also to Veedersburg. I am not sure how Betsy is related. She was born about 1813.

The 1850 Census in Wayne township, Montgomery Co. lists a Moses Herriman Jr (wife Emeline)and his parents (Moses and Lucretia Heriman) live next door to him. Check the diff. spellings! This info. was from a typewritten transcription. I have not seen the original census.

I am soory, but I made a couple of mistakes in my last post about Hiram and Cora. Cora's mother's first name was spelled Rhoda, not Roda, and Arba was not their child. He was George B. Herriman's son, who was a son of Edward C. Herriman, a brother of Lemuel, father of Hiram.

Sorry about the confusion.

Dan Harriman
Orange, Texas

Hello;

Not sure if you have this info or not, but Hiram B. Herriman was born July 23, 1852, and died Dec 4, 1900, by a self inflicted gunshot wound while temporarily insane, is what his death certificate states. Hiram is a lateral line of mine, and I am interested in his ancestry, especially if information on his grandfathers and great-grandfathers is available.

Cora M. Strong was born June 16, 1860 in Michigan. She was the daughter of James Strong, born in Ohio, and Roda J. Moon, born in Penna. Cora died Jan 9, 1918 of pneumonia. They had two children. Nellie and Arba.

Hope that helps some,

Dan Harriman
Orange, Texas

1870 census, Cedar Township, Callaway Co., MO:
pg. 277, #98-98: John H. Thomas, age 28, farmer, REV $200, PV $195, b. MO; Nancy E. Thomas, age 22, keeping house, b. MO; Charles A. Thomas, age 4, at home, b. MO; George R. Thomas, age 2, at home, b. MO; Christina Herriman, age 64, Making Home, b. MO [this is Nancy's mother]

John and Nancy (Herriman) Thomas are in the same township and county in 1880, with 6 children, including a son, only 9 months old.

By 1900 they have moved to Campbell Township, Polk Co. MO

I do not know anything about the lineage of John Thomas, but Nancy is a Harryman, daughter of Hugh and Christina (Zumwalt) Harryman and granddaughter of John Culport Harryman. Does that agree with your records? At one time there was an online Zumwalt genealogy, courtesy Paul@zumwalts.com, at: www.zumwalts.com - no sources cited; If that link is still valid, and it still does not show sources, consider all info as tentative since no sources were cited.

Would you be willing to share your source for the marriage date of Nancy and John? Thanks!

SueB
Harriman Family Association

Harriman is spelled many different ways but it is all the same family. Moses is the son of Moses and Lucretia. He and Emaline move to Minnesota where they both die. I have not been able to find what happened to Moses and Lucretia after the 1850 census. I am very interested in your ancestors Jacob and Betsy Beaver. I have not been able to trace them. What happens to them? I know Moses and Lucretia are from New Hampshire but I do not have the proof that I want to trace them to the next generation. I will be in Indiana in May and will be in Crawfordsville area doing research.

Levit Harriman had a son Jeremiah also known as Jerry Harriman. Jerry was married twice. First wife was Rachel Talbert and the second wife was Elizabeth Philpot. When Jerry died on Sept 20, 1915 an obituary shows up for him in the Crawfordsville Journal Sept 24, 1915. It states that Jerry is a cousin to Levi Harriman. Levi is my ancestor and he was the son of Moses and Patsy Harriman. If that is true then Jerry's father must be a brother to Moses and Mose's parents are Moses and Lucretia Harriman. To date that is as close to proof as I have been able to get to connect Levit with Moses. I hope this helps

Would anyone has information on his near drowning on October 25 1892 in West Bay? I have two newspaper clippings but if anyone has more information, I would be grateful.

Gail Darby
