Hi Pam! This is so wonderful! Thank you for sharing your tree. I'll take a closer look at it as soon as I can get to my genealogy software. I received an email a while ago from Chris Sinatra. Are you acquainted? Also, if you are on Facebook, there are a few Hepdings with whom we are in contact. Come find us!
Jolene

I would love to see a photo of this portrait! We don't have a photo of either (at least not that we know of) in the family. We do have a few unidentified. If you could send me a copy at: apple@nwlink.com, that would be great!

Anne Hepting; Rhoda Hepting; Dorothy Hepting Mitchell; Frederick Hepting

Thank you for the info. I just located Dorothy's married name myself today, so it is good to have this confirmation from you.

I also came across a couple of interesting tidbits.

After Alexander Moir died, his widow, Katharina/Catherine/Cathie Hepting Moir brought their 2 daughters (Winifred Jamieson Moir and Katherine "Kitty" Hepting Moir) to Canada in 1912 and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. The passenger list is now up on Ancestry. They were ticket number 68. Ticket number 67 is "Miss Hepting". Unfortunately, it gives no age or identifying info other than the fact that she was a typist. We were unaware that any of the Hepting girls came with them.

Frederick William Lambert Hepting was working at the shipyards in Glasgow in the early 1900's. In 1931, he traveled to South Africa - his occupation is listed as Surgeon. His age is listed as 31 and he is shown as single. I have not located any marriage records at this point.

Still no additional details on anyone named Athenia Hepting -- however, the ship that Alexander Moir's family came to Canada on was called the Athenia.

Those of Lambert Junior's daughters that I know about were Anne Moir Hepting, named after her maternal grandmother Anne Moir (about whom I have a fair bit of information); Dorothy Mary Hepting (married name Mitchell) and Rhoda Alexander Hepting.

I met Dorothy Mitchell in 1971 on my first visit to Scotland, that was a few years before she died. I'm almost sure that she had no children, or rather, surviving children, not did Rhoda, who never married. I don't know about Anne Moir Hepting, but I could look for a marriage next time I'm at the Scotland's People Centre, if you haven't heard from anyone else by then.

Best wishes for your research.

According to the store website: The store, which was formerly Hepting & Farrer in Murray Place, has changed its name to Fraser Hart for the new location in The Thistle Centre. Hepting & Farrer was in existence for almost 100 years, and had an established a reputation for quality. This commitment will continue in the new Fraser Hart shop.

http://www.fraserhart.co.uk/t-storestirling.aspx

Corrections on the info posted above:
Emily Biertumpfel married Emanuel Hepting, the brother of Lambert Hepting, Sr. They had a daughter, Alice Emily Hepting b. 1861 in Scotland.

Lambert's Children:

1. Katharina Muckle Hepting b. 1862 Stirling d. 1958 Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She married Alexander Moir, M.D. in Edinburgh. Alexander d. 1898 in Edinburgh. Katharina emigrated to Canada with her 2 daughters: Winifred Jamieson Moir (m. Edward Iorwerth Jones) and Katharina Hepting Moir (m. Arthur Gray)

3. Mary Ferguson McLachlan Hepting b. 1866 Stirling d. 1963 Victoria. She never married.

4. Duncan Emanuel Hepting b. 1869 Stirling m. 1908 Medway, England to Clarice Helena Bryan. In 1911, Clarice is living with her parents in Chatham, Kent, England - listed as married. The next record I find is Duncan's will being probated, stating he died in 1915 in the Waterfall Sanatorium in New South Wales, Australia. I'm not sure if Duncan went to Australia specifically for treatment at the sanitorium, or if he went for other reasons and then ended up hospitalized. It appears they had no children. Clarice never remarried and died in 1946 in Kent, England.

5. Frederick William Lambert Hepting b. 1871 Stirling, still living in 1901 with his brother Duncan and sister Mary in Cathcart, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Any idea where he went from here?

Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out who Athenia's parents were to determine the connection.

Thank you for the reply,
I am researching for a book I am writing about notable freemasons in Stirling during the 19th century, especially those who were members of a masonic lodge called Stirling Royal Arch No.76.
The name Lambert Hepting is well known not just in the city of Stirling (where I'm from) but within the minute books of Lodge 76, I have note of Lambert senior from the 13th of February 1868 when along with a few others he played a VERY important part in the history of Lodge 76, which will feature prominent in the book.
If you family has any photographs of Lambert senior or his 2 sons (all members of 76) I would love a copy for my book.
By the way, Lambert Hepting junior, not Frederick, followed his father into the jeweller business and stayed at Murray Place in Stirling in 1894 when he was aged 31, his occupation was noted as Jeweller. This might just come as a surprise, guess where " Lambert and Hepting's " shop is, Murray place!
Thaks for being in touch, if you would like to get in touch by e-mail, please do so. Type in Lodge 76 in Google you'll see my website there.

regards,
Stewart.

Alphonse & Ferdinand Hepding

My husband's great-grandfather was Okey Charles Auvil, Sr. He married Rosie Elanora Hepding. Rosie's parents were Ferdinand Hepding and Emma Otillia Rhine. And, Ferdinand's parents were Alphonse Hepding and Mary Yerker. While I cannot be 100% sure, I think that this family had their roots in Germany. Do these names sound familiar to anyone?

Re: Children of Alphonse Hepting

The following other children of Alphonse and Mary Hepting was confirmed through the 1880 Maryland Census:

Elisebeth Hepting (b. Abt. 1856)
Caroline Hepting (b. Abt. 1858)
Augustus Hepting (b. Abt. 1863)
Rosa Hepting (b. Abt. 1865)
Ellen Hepting (b. Abt. 1868)

We are relatively certain that the following individual belongs to this family as well:

Mary Hepting (b. Abt. 1852) married James McCulley.
Children: Mary A. and George A.

According to family records (which contain unconfirmed information), there were supposedly other children of Alphonse Hepting:

Julius ?
William? and Em?
John and Florence Smith (children: Carrie, Stella)
Albert

I would love to have any info you can share with me about Lambert's descendants. In a date book passed down through the family, I show the month and day of a birthdate for a Nancy Hepting, but until I saw your post, I was not sure how she was related to our Hepting line. My mother-in-law would be cousins with your friend. She has a brother and a sister who are still living as well. Her gr-grandmother was Katharina Hepting, sister of Lambert, Jr. Katharina m. Alexander Moir and they moved to Edinburgh where Alexander became a doctor. He died in 1898 and in 1914, Katharina emigrated to Canada along with her daughters Katharina and Winifred. They settled in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Winifred m. Edward Meirion Jones and they eventually settled in Seattle, Washington, USA.

You are on the right track! Lambert Hepting (Jr.) was accidentally shot in the face by his 9 year old daughter and he died. Lambert was a jeweler, just like his father, Lambert Hepting Sr. They owned Hepting Jewelers, later Hepting and Ferrar Jewelers. The Hepting family now does not own any part of the business, but it is still running in Stirling, Scotland. Somewhere I have the newspaper article about Lambert's death.

Lambert Sr. is my husbands gr-gr-grandfather. I'd be glad to share with you what I can.

Lambert Hepting was related to my father's side of the family and he was a watch and clock maker who lived at Murray Place
Stirling, Scotland. In 1913 he was accidentally shot by his 7 year old daughter, Mary, whilst he was clearing a drawer out in a room at the back of his jewellers shop
at 8 Murray place, Stirling. He placed the loaded gun on a sideboard and she picked it up, pointed it at him and playfully pulled the trigger. He died in Stirling Infirmary about a week later after seeming to make a good recovery. His business was named Hepting and Farrar. Farrar being his partner.

He had a son named Duncan Hepting but I don't think the son had any children. You can read all about Lambert, in the Stirling Observer newspaper 1913 , not sure what week. His father was also Lambert, a German immigrant watchmaker from Neukirch, in the Black Forest. The Heptings of Stirling were also related by marriage to Peter Ketterer, another famousGerman clockmaker of that period.

Lambert Hepting senior was from NEUKIRCH, Germany,
not NEUKIRSCH..and he came to Scotland about 1826/8. He had three other brothers. Gregor, Ezekiel and Emanuel. Ezekiel went back to the Black forest, Gregor had a Jewellers shop in Edinburgh. and Emanuel lived at 68 Albany Street, London, and was a candle mould maker. He married Emily Biertumpfel, and had a daughter , also named Emily.

Emanuel was a deserter from the German army of that period but remained in England to avoid possible prosecution by the Baden military authority.

Dear Charlotte,
Just found your post, and I'm very curious. I have Hepting relatives buried in that same cemetery very near to Mary and have often wondered about her, who she was? None of my Hepting relatives seem to know anything about her. Joseph Hepting was my great, great grandfather. She may have been a sister to Joseph. It's unlikely they were not related in some way. Joseph emigrated from Baden, Germany just prior to the Civil War and married Harriet Jones from Cambria
County.
Roberta

Hi Roberta!
I'm going to email a cousin in CA who has been researching the Humphreys. I've looked through my mother's family names and just can't find a J.S. Humphrey so I don't know if he and Mary Hepting were "ours". The first Humphrey that we have a record of was actually Joseph Humphras but he and his sons changed the name. The two little boys who are buried in that cemetery, John and William Humphras were his sons. Will add another note if I find any more info.
Charlotte
