Hi I have researched my family tree and the first Heneghan to arrive in Erris in co. Mayo was in 1828 and his name was Ned and he arrived with his sons, Anthony, Thomas, and Francis, there may be more people in the family the children were all born from 1819 onwards. We were always told that we originally came from Lousibourg, so if you are missing a Ned Heneghan on your family tree he moved to Belmullet and incidentally we are having a Heneghan reunion from 21-24 June 2013, see www.gaolsiar.com for more details...

Re: ancestors

I am related to Henehans (although spelling of this surname obviously has many spelling variations) also Morans. My 2x Great Grandfather is Edward J Henehan Sr. a Coal Mine Laborer B: Abt 1862 Scranton, PA married in 1885 to Bridget Moran B: Abt 1862 New York. Apparently Edward Sr. died in a barn fire in 1927 as he was known to be a "drunk" and started the fire with either a cigarette or cigar can't remember specifically. Edward Sr. and Bridget had the following children: Edward Jr., Patrick, Joseph (My great grandfather), John, Madeline, Jennie, Kathleen, and Annie There was a total of 10 children only 8 survived. Many of which left for Chicago in the 20s/30s.
Edward J Henehan Sr.'s father is Patrick Henehan and mother is either Catherine or Margaret McGrath. Although info has yet to be verified whether McGrath is her maiden name and if Patrick is the name of Edward's father. Bridget Moran's siblings are all born in Pensylvania which becomes conflicting as even her older siblings are born in Pennsylvania. Her parents are Edward Moran and Jane (unknown maided name) I have received a death certificate for her from another member saying she died in Scranton from Acute Rheumatism in October of 1892. Not much else is known as of right now. Ultimately I'm trying to find where our Henehans and Morans initially came from in Ireland. Can not find any vital records to trace where Patrick Henehan comes from nor where Edward Moran (Bridget's father) comes from in Ireland. If any of this info links to yours please contact me LiZzNy810@msn.com

I think there is a link between your HENEGHAN and my HENAGHAN/HENAGAN ancestry. I have traced mine to Blacksod Bay BELMULLET IRELAND through a marriage certificate of my great grandfather's brother. Two brothers, FRANCIS and PATRICK HENAGHAN married two illiterate CAIN sisters, SARAH and BRIDGET, all from C MAYO. Mine migrated to VICTORIA in 1860's 1870's. Also, they were great friends with RILEY/O'REILLY and every other variation of the name you could think of, because the RILEY etc were illiterate. They all lived close by each other in COBURG VICTORIA, even next door, and the friendship apparently went on for generations.
How we are related is anyone's guess. I hope to go to Ireland next year, and perhaps can get some help from the parish priest around that area.
my email is faybay@beagle.com.au
Bye for now
Fay

I am researching for a John Henaghen, born 1831 (only know from Ireland), married to Mary Many (had sister Margaret Many) and emigrated to England (1st appeared on 1861 census in Baguley, near Manchester, England). At this time he had 2 daughters - Mary, Margaret, and 1 son - Naney(??)

My great-great-great-grandfather was JAMES HENEGHAN (c. 1812-1847) of Shraheen, Co. Mayo, brother (possibly) of Thaddeus, and certainly of Paddy of Doon, Co. Mayo, and Anthony, and father of Patrick (x Widow Heffron), Philip (x Mary Heffron), MATTHIAS (my great-great-grandfather, 1846-1918), Thaddeus, and Bridget. I should be very happy to share information. I have an electronic version (with my annotations) of the Oral History prepared in 1945 by Matt. J. Heneghan of Chicago.

James Heneghan and Mary Lyons (Peggy Kramer)

James Heneghan of Shraheen, Co. Mayo (father of Patrick Philip of Jerseyville, MATTHIAS of Westport, Thaddy of ?Croaghrim, Bridget of Shraheen x Philip Gavan) was born around 1812, died aged 35, and was buried in Aughagower Cemetery (not far from Westport). I didn't manage to locate the gravestone when I last visited (1992), but there's a transcription in the Westport Historical Society in Clew Bay. I suspect that the headstone wasn't erected until 1918, when my great-grandfather, James Heneghan of Liverpool paid for a headstone for his own father, MATTHIAS HENEGHAN (Philip's brother) of Mill Street, Westport (d. 21 May 1918, aged 72). I didn't know that Mary's maiden name was Lyons (source?), but the transcription on the same headstone indicates that she was born, 1813/1814 and died 16 May 1879. Hope that helps.

Their grave is located in Aughagower Graveyard, outside of Westport. I was unable to locate the headstone itself when I visited in 1992, but I have a copy (made in August 1986) of the transcription made by the Westport Historical Society:

"Have Mercy O Lord on the soul / of James Heneghan who / died Nov. 1847, / Aged 35 years / and his wife Mary who / died May 16th 1879 / Aged 65 years / and their son Mathias, / Died 18th May 1918, / Aged 72 years".

The grave is Number 17, Section 2, Line II (Left side of Main Road).

I have in my possession a bill from Coffeys of Westport, dated 1932, charging my Great-grandfather, James Heneghan of Liverpool, five pounds and five shillings for cleaning, adding a new inscription to, and resetting, a headstone in Aughagower Cemetery. I assume that he was adding the details of his father Mat(t)hias (d. 1917) to his grandparents' headstone.

Hello
Searching for deschendents of James Hannigan and Catherine McHale of Ireland. Both were dead before 1861.

I know their sons Michael (b. 1836, married Mary Colleran) and Thomas (b 1837, married Mary Joyce) spent time in Ormskirk, Lancashire prior to emigrating to Philadelphia USA. They were joined by sisters Sarah and Ellen in the USA, who never married. I believe they had a brother James and a sister Anna who married a Grimes. Birth, marriage and death records from Ormskirk provide the various spellings above.

Lorraine
Maryland

Mary Riley Heffron Heneghan is also my great-grandmother and since I've been searching ancestry.com site, I've found in a census that they may perhaps come over in the year 1871.
