Ralph Heiss (Married to Edith Hester Smith Twiggs) was my great-grandfather. True not by blood line. My G-grandfather Ralph married Edith after her first husband Twiggs died Edith and John Twiggs had a son Edward Twiggs who was my mother's father. However, Ralph Heiss was the only great grandfather I knew and he was a very active part of my life. In fact my children knew him as their great-great grandfather and my son carries his name as a middle name, William Ralph. I can remember Ralph Heiss holding and walking my son William and William even has Ralph's WWI army hat.
We know where they are buried and some other tree information. We think Charles Ralph's brother is buried in Cedar Hills near Ralph Heiss the paratrooper. Ralph Heiss the paratrooper was the only child Ralph and Edith had and unfortunately he was killed in WWII.
Ina W.

Charles was my Grandfather. My family had no contact with him after approximately 1932 or 1933 so we don't know much about the Heiss family. We are trying to go back farther than Emil Sr but have been stumped. Are you a direct descendant of Ralph's or by marriage. I know Ralph and Edith's son was killed in the war. Did he have a family? We would love to know more about our extended Heiss relatives because we know none of our grandfathers siblings families.

Hi! Thank you SO much for the reply! I often wondered if anyone would ever see my post.

I remember Hank and Sally and Gretchen and daughter-in-law Fran with such fondness. It was my first job, and I enjoyed every minute of working there. It is where I developed a great appreciation for working in a mom-and-pop operation. Now I work in corporate America - ugh!

My brother (Ronny) and sister (Diana) also worked there. My sister passed away a few years back, but I will let my brother know the update. We have often talked about the Heiss family wondering what ever happened to everyone.

One question . . . who are you? Your name isn't in your message. Are you someone I may have known? Feel free to email me directly: dkirby@visa.com
Sincerely,
Randy Kirby

DOES ANYONE KNOW THIS ROBERT HEISS??

WILLIAM W. LEWIS may be related somehow to :

OLIVER P. LEWIS, born about 1825 in Pennsylvania. In 1850 he was living in Spring Garden in Philadelphia’s 3rd Ward (Precinct 1). In the same household lived Elizabeth Lewis, aged 10 months, born in Pennsylvania; also Margaret Hess, age 40, Jacob Hess, age 19, Catherine Hess, age 16, Caroline Hess, age 13, and Emma Hess, age 10, and Amanda Hess, age 7). In 1860 Oliver was living in the 13th Ward of Philadelphia (page 780) with Margaret Lewis (born about 1821 in Pennsylvania. Also living in the household were Catharine Shinn (age 25), Emma Hess (age 20), Ella Shinn (age 1), and Lizzie Lewis (age 10). They were living next door to Robert Heiss, a confectioner, who may have known Samuel Bingham, who was also a confectioner. On June 20, 1870, Oliver P. Lewis, a "boot manufacturer", was living in Philadelphia’s 13th Ward (page 459) with "Margaret Hess," age 60. Both were born in Pennsylvania.
THANK YOU,
CAROL H

I don't have much info, was wondering if you found Heiss in Dayton, Ohio, he married an Aker. Son James Beverly, born April 1928 married Bertha Mae Barton 1953. I think there might have been another son, Frank. James died Oct. 1982 in Riverside, California. Does any of this look familiar? Any ideas where I can go from here with this little info?
Johann Heiss

Doesn't look like too much of a connection here. Heiss seems to be a very common name in Austria/Germany. My dad had a sister (name unknown) and a brother Louis/Lewis. They ran a dairy business in the Vienna suburbs somewhere. That's about all I know of my dad's history. He left home at age 15 and never returned. He signed on a fishing boat out of Bremerhaven, Germany and later gravitate to the merchant ships. Stayed in this country when war was imminent around 1913-14. That's about all I know. He traveled extensively around this country but as far as I know never went back or corresponded with anyone at home.

Johann Heiss

Hi Frances, my g-grandfather Lawrence was born in 1869 in Landeck Tirol Austria and died in 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. His father was Johann Heiss born around 1848-1858 to my best guess somewhere in Austria and his mother was Theresa Feuar born also 1848-1858 guess don't really know where. Maybe Austria. This info was on his death certificate and the informant was his wife Johanna Starjakob. Looks like the parents first names are the same but thats all? I don't know if my g-grandfather Lawrence had any braothers or sisters. Haven't been able to find out much of anything about the Heiss side of the family. My grandmother was Anna Heiss who named my mom Evelyn she said after a famous ice skater in Austria that was a cousin Evelyn Heiss. I don't know much more than this other than Lawrence and Johanna came to Chicago, Il in 1904. Any connections here? let me know, thanks...Jan

I am looking for any information on George and Margaret Heiss of New Jersey. They raised my father, their nephew, Thomas Halverson. George and Margaret had four children, Mary, George Jr. Mabel and Hazel. Another relative, Samuel Martinson, also lived with them. They seemed to have lived in Elizabeth, N.J., for a long time. I'm trying to follow my father's trail to adulthood and am looking for the high school he attended. I would also love to be in touch with any of George and Margaret Heiss' decendants, as they would be my cousins. I'm looking, ultimately, for a half sister that I've never met, Diane Halvorsen (or Halverson). Anyone have any information on any of this?

Ever see a Martha A. Heiss born Jan. 30, 1860, buried in Hackensack, NJ cemetery Jul. 29, 1905? She married Conrad (Freudemann) Freideman and lived with 6 sons at Cherry Hill, Hackensack, NJ, Bergen County. Conrad was killed in a tornado and she remarried Maxwell Hill or Held and they had a daughter Emily thought to be a twin.
I don't know where Martha grew up, but thought to be German descent and a school teacher at one time. She and husbands ran a small store in Hackensack with a bowling alley underneath I'm told.

The next available census after 1880 is 1900. That's a 20 yr. gap; so add 20 yrs. to everyone's age. Joseph would be abt. 75. Probably deceased by then. Better to go and search for the children in 1900, etc...
