My grandfather's name was John Hagstad Johnson. His father went by James Johnson, but we believe he chose something Americans could pronounce. Jamess's sister, Ingeborg, sent a photo made by a Trondheim photographer. James was likely born in 1846. He named his other children Ida Johanna, James, and Albert Sidney. I think he might be the child of Johanna and Johann Mikkail Johnssen who are in the 1865 Trondheim census, living on Sandgate with 4 seamen sons and l daughter still at home. He showed up in Galveston about 1868 with a schooner and became a pilot for the Port of Galveston, and died at age 38.I am trying to find his family in Norway. Joyce Louis Does this connect with you in any way. Ingeborg in the family mentioned above married a Larintz Synnes (Jlouis1939@aol.com)

Was your Martin Hegstad named Martin Julius Hegstad, and was he from Trondheim, Norway and born in the 1840's? I've been trying to find what happened to Martin Julius Hegstad because he or his half brother, Christian Thoresen, children of Johanna Hegstad and Johann Hegstad might be my great grandfather. They are on the 1865 Norwegian census and not on the 1875 census. My ggrandfather showed up in Galveston about 1868, age 22, and took the name James Johnson. He was captain of various vesels and then a bar pilot for the Port of Galveston. He named his first son John Haegstad Johnson. He died at age 38. My grandfather was the only one of his 4 children who lived to grow up.Please let me hear from you.
Joyce (Mrs. Dan) Louis, jlouis1939@aol.com Bryan, Texas

Martin Hegstad, bio

MARTINE HEGSTAD & GUNHILD (HALVORSON)
Martin Hegstad homesteaded 160 acres in Section 36, Hickory Township and Gunhild Halvorson homesteaded 160 acres in Section 35. Their quarter sections joined each other. I don't know if they knew each other before they homesteaded, but they got acquainted while living close as close neighbors. Martin must have been over there drinking lots of coffee and probably holding hands while they were drinking coffee. They got married after a few years. I suppose they figured two could live as cheap as one.

They raised cattle and chickens and did some grain farming.
Martin had a sawmill and sawed lumber. Soon many buildings were built on his farm.

Martin and Gunhild were members of the Nazareth Lutheran Church. Martin served as supervisor of Hickory Twp. He was one of the early members of the school board in District # 9.

In the early 20's they moved to Gully, MN where they operated the telephone office for many years.

--page 115 Pennington County Centennial Book

I descend from Adolf Mathiessen Hegstad who was born in 1849 on the Island of Hitra, Norway. Adolf used the surname Hegstad, but I believe it was a farm name.

Do you know "where" on the Island of Hitra that Hegstad or Hagstad was located. Years ago the Research Desk at the Family History Library in Salt Lake gave me a vague reference to where they thought it was located, but they were not positive about it.

Any help would be appreciated. His 1849 birth/christening is in Hitra Church parish records. -- Helen Graves (hgraves@psln.com)

Hi! You must be Margaret's niece. I think your Dad's name is named John?. New York police officer? I am Helmer Field's oldest daughter, Bonita (call me Bonnie.) Born Grafton, ND, '42. Margaret showed me NYC in about 1954 when I was traveling with the Grafton Parade Band. We had just come from Miama, Orange Bowl Parade. Several years before that, Margaret visited in Grafton once. I think she had a convertible. We sat and talked & I thought she was very nice.
Lynda Neuman is my sister. She is the one that responded to this website and alerted me to it. Recently a distant cousin was working on the family tree and came up with some interesting and unpronouncible names from Norway. My Mom and Dad are norweigan. Grandma Field (my dad Helmer's Mother), was born in Tronheim, Norway. She married a Dahl, and Your Grandma, Nora, and my Great aunt Eva were full sisters. When Mr. Dahl died, she married my Grandfather, Ole Field. Lynda and I have a brother Jim, who is still in Grafton. I live in Washington state. Lynda is in ND.
Email me sometime.
