My mother researched that line of the family quite a lot and wrote down the story. Patrick's wife was Elizabeth, known as Fish Betsy because she used to sell fish - quite a story.
Just checked my records - Rose Ellen Heveron married Tom Butterworth - son was Fred - so right family. My mother wrote a history (unpublished) of Elizabeth Riley (known as Fish Betsy in Rochdale)and Patrick Heveron as far as she could remember from family talk. Quite a bit about Rose Ellen, Tom, who went to America, Fred, who was hauled before the courts for stealing a jar of toffee and sentenced to work on a Training ship. Thus beginning a life at sea - well fed and active. Younger siblings, Louis and Sarah not as lucky. Brought up in dire poverty, both had rickets - Louis's legs bowed at hips and Sara's bowed at the shins.

Illinois 1884. The couple ended up in Denver, CO and are my G Grandparents. Could be she is sister of your James and Jeremiah IF they were Irish-born.

David and Bridget had four children: Philip, Margaret (Madge), Mary and David. I think all the children were raised in Glasgow.

Rob, my grandfather was Joseph Erin Heveran Senior, he was born in Ireland, where, we're not certain. He ended up in the Chicago Illinois area till he joined the army in 1917, which he served in WW1. Afterwards, he married Lydia Meyer and had 3 children, Jerry, Lorraine (my mother), and Joe Jr. They moved in the 50's to Decatur Illinois, where my parents met. The families were in the Decatur area, till 1956, where my parents and my grandparents moved to a town called Oreana. There they stayed till their deaths, which were in the mid 80's. My grandfather was born in 1900, my grandmother was born 1899, and believe it, they both died at the exact same age, 85. They reside at the cemetary at Argenta Illinois called Clear Creek Cemetary. Joseph Jr lived from 1960 till 1983 in California, in the Los Angeles area, raised 5 children, two which are sons and carry the Heveran name. The younger son, Edward, lives there still, and has sons of his own. His children, or sons are the only known Heveran's to carry the name on. There is a branch of the family that did end up in California before the two families ended up there, which was a Brother of my Grandfather. He had a daughter from what I can remember. Unfortunately, my Grandfather was a quiet man, when it came to his family, as he was placed in an orphanage by his father, my great grandfather. You see, my Great Grandmother died while giving birth to my Grandfather. If it would help you, her maiden name was Hood from what my Aunt told me. As it stands today, you have three main families, Heveran, Gamache, Tille. The Gamache families are in the Klamath Falls Oregon area, the Tilles are in Boody Illinois, and I'm all the way out here in Brownsville Washington. Who knows, we very well could be long lost relatives, either from my Grandfathers imediate family, or from the Ireland families that came over later on, related to my Grandfathers family. Anyway, good luck, hope that this little tidbit might help you. If I can help you anymore, feel free to email me again. By the way, you're a Robert also, strange how that happened to the two of us, lol.

Spelling of this name is extremely variable. My wife is descended from a Maria "Heffran" whose parents were Michael and Mary Ann Heffran. They came to the US in 1868 and settled in Wisconsin. Besides daughter Maria, they had sons Janes and Peter. Mary Ann must have died young, as later census records show a wife Anne with a baby son Joseph, 17 years younger than my wife's greatgrandmother Maria Heffran.

If and when I do find anything further on Mary Hefferan or her siblings, I will be happy to drop you a line. Till then, have fun and good luck with your continued searching.

Ian, there is a Bridget Heveran in my line, and I have seen the name spelled on a church document with double ff instead of a v, by a German priest. The name comes from Co.Mayo, Ireland, my line settled in Ontario, Can. Many more details avail.

I only have the names of 2 Heverans who made it across, but know there must have been others left behind. Would love to share what info I have with you. Bill Heveran

Sorry Paulette. I think you misread my post. Mary Hefferan was married to William Cosgrove and according to a 1930 census they had someone by the name of Thomas living with them. I can only assume at this point that perhaps Thomas was Mary's brother. Hope this helps. Any further questions, feel free to ask.

Hello,

I’m connected to a James HEFFERAN who married a Bridget KELLYin 1887 in Pittston. They died within a month of each other in the winter of 1899 leaving 4 daughters who lived with other relatives. If these are the folks you are seeking out, I’d like to hear from you. Best I can tell James parents were a Martin and Marey HEFFERAN who lived in Port Griffith.

Regards,

Jerry

My Catherine Heferan is also showing up in Newfoundland, but I have not located where yet. Her son born 1844. There is a website, and the only one I've found with info on the Hefferan name. It's not Hefford either. There is a proper Gaelic name. As soon as I locate the site, I'll pass it on to you. It is important to have as many spellings as possible and then see which one applies. My heferan are Roman Catholic, but I have not been able to link them back to Ireland yet. The 1836 Newfoundland Census would be most helpful, but to my knowledge, it is not on line yet. Let's keep in touch. That name is really rare in NWF, we might share a link.

Dear Paul,
Hello, I'm looking into my family tree and not getting very far on the net. I came across your message and was interested because you say that most of your relations are still in Manchester. My Father went by the name "Jack" but was christened "John", he lived in Manchester until the late 50s. His father, Peter, married Sarah Ellen Shorrocks.
If any of these names ring a bell please get in touch. Keeping my fingers crossed, Margaret.
