I'm looking for any information on a John HEDGES (31) who immigrated from England in 1911 on the Rimutaka to Brisbane, Australia with wife Alice (25) and child Horace (1). I have no other information. I believe that his wife may have been a LONGHURST as I have found an Alice HEDGES on a list of Nominators for Immigrants at the Queensland State Archives. She nominated a family of LONGHURST's that I am interested in from Bookham, Surrey, England. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Renee
I have recently purchased a Daguerreotype labelled as Harvey A HEDGES, Platte County, Missouri and dated 1855. A further inscription inside the case says "Grandmother Miller, Frederick, Maryland, 1853" (not sure to what this is referring, as the photo is definitely a man).

I would be more than happy to send a high resolution scan of the photograph to any descendants or relatives of Harvey HEDGES, who, from brief research, appears to have been born in 1817 in Virginia, and died 1868 in Missouri.

If you would like a copy, please contact me on the thread.

Regards
Prue

Hedges of Warren Co., New York and Long Island

I think I've read every message on this board as well as checked all the Hedges family websites, and I've found nothing on my branch. Phillip Hedges was born 16 Oct 1786 in Montauk Point, Long Island. He was an early settler of Warren County, NY and is in the 1850 census. He married at least 3 times: Orpha How (died 25 Jun 1819), Mary Stickney (d. in 1831), and Jerusha ?who died 1861. He was a patriot in the war of 1812, a farmer, and died on the farm 27 Dec 1865.

Can anyone tell me about his parents or siblings, if any? I'd be very grateful for any assistance or leads.

If you have an interest in the surname HEDGES you might like to visit www.Hedges-Study.org.uk This explains the work and aspirations of the One Name Study. The Hedges Study database now stands at 65,300 entries concerning Hedges and related surnames and there are several more thousands waiting to be keyed in.
The database is not online. If you would like me to make a search for a particular ancestor please follow the links on the website or contact me via this Board. To make a thorough search I will need to know dates and places to enable me to pinpoint your particular ancestor. As you can imagine there are, for example, more than a few Williams, Johns, Anns and Marys etc.
This information is available free to anyone with a connection with the Hedges name. I am, of course, always glad to receive contributions of Hedges related information.
Best wishes Sue Hedges

Hi,

I have been a member of this list for quite a few years waiting to see if I would hear anything about the Hedges who owned the diesel factory in Marlton NJ that I posted about when I first joined. So I will ask again and hopefully someone can help me out.

I am looking for any info on a Harry Hedges who owned and operated the diesel factory in Marlton NJ during the 50's and very early 60's. It may have even been in the 40's. About 5 years ago while I was learning the basics of html I made this amateurish website on the place.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/teegate/hd/

The company even sold stock which obviously became worthless at some point in the early 60's.

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/teegate/hd/stock.html

Any info on Harry would be appreciated.

Guy Thompson
Hi
I am seeking the birthplace of Jospeh Hedges who in the 1851 Census for Ware, Hertford, UK states he was born in Cambridge, UK. It appears that the only baptism entry is for Elizabeth Hedges in 1821 with father William and mother Harriet. We know our Joseph Hedges hasd a father William, so this could be them, but cannot find the baptism of Joseph or any other children. they may not have come from there. He married Emily Linton at her parish in Herts Hertford.

Anyone recognised this English based family of Hedges please.
Thanks
Edie McArthur

My maternal grandfather was Charles Hedges 1873-1955. He was a life long resident of Johnson Co, Ia. His parents were Joseph Barton Hedges (1848-1922)and Minerva Jane McCormick (1848-1916). Joseph's parents were James P (1817-1899) Sarah A. Barton (1821-1907) were from Uniontown, Pa. They moved to Delaware Co, Ia in the 1850's, then Linn Co and finally Johnson Co, Ia. All I know of James parents is that the father was J.Hedges and his mother's name was Elizabeth (1795-1865). She also married a Benjamin Dorsey. Her tombstone says they were from VA.
I thought they came from the Hedges family from Hedgesville, WV but now I am not so sure. I can't find out where they came from.
Any information would greatly be appreciated.

Rev. John F. Hedges' Obituary

Bowling Green (MO) Times, Thursday, August 11, 1881 (in part): "Died August 8, 1881, at the residence of George & Alice Peay, his grandchildren, Rev. John F. Hedges, in the 84th year of his age. He was born in Virginia, came to Missouri at a early day and commenced the preaching of the gospel with the Baptist denomination a number of years ago, remaining a consistent and earnest worker in the Baptist faith. After a brief illness of only a few days he fell asleep, leaving a large family of children and grandchildren to mourn his loss. His life was one of an eventful character. He had his trials here. One sad bereavement was the loss of his companion several years ago, never becoming reconciled to this irreparable loss."

(I am not related to this person. Gerri)

I've posted here before but now have a new email address. My husband's gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather was Lemuel M. Hedges. He was born in 1780, served in the war of 1812 from Virginia, is in the 1820 census records of Franklin County, Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, then Miller County, Missouri, in 1840. They then went to Benton County, AR, by 1850. I've been told his father (or possibly grandfather) was Sir Charles Hedges who came from England. I've been unable to verify this information. Anyone with any clues on this branch of the Hedges, I would greatly appreciate hearing from.

Dewitt Franklin Hedges from Ohio

My GG Grandfather was DeWitt Franklin Hedges born 6 Jul 1848 in Warren, Tremble Co. Ohio. He was orphaned at the age of 8 and went to live with his Uncle. He enrolled in the Civil War under an alias "James Jackson" due to being underage and not wanting his Uncle to find him. He lost his arm at Jonesboro, GA according to Civil War documents from the National Archives. He was a telegraph operator for the Nickle Plate Road and eventually became the train station master in Kokomo and Noblesville, IN. He died in Noblesville, IN on 11 Dec. 1928.

I do not know the name of his father or mother.

My records show that Dewitt Franklin Hedges married twice:
1. Caroline Dunnavant b. 16 Aug 1846 In Sidney, Shelby Co., Ohio; m. 17 Jun 1869 in Sidney, Ohio and d. 15 Aug 1922 in the Old Soldiers Home, Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana. They had 10 children with my Great Grandmother being Alice Albertine Hedges b. 18 Aug 1875 in Fortville, Hancock Co. IN, d. 6 Apr 1910 in Kokomo, Howard Co. IN. She married Mathias Polk Walker b. 22 Mar 1874 Kokomo, Howard Co., IN m. 17 Mar 1895 Noblesville, Hamilton Co., IN d. 18 Mar 1954 Kokomo, Howard Co., IN.

2. Carlene B. Burkley b. Abt 1859 Rush Co., IN m. 25 May 1896 in Kokomo, IN d. 11 Dec 1928 in Noblesville, IN.

Do you have any information on this family tree?

Abraham D. Hedges, Wm. H. Hedges

I’m looking for info on Abraham Hedges—wife Elizabeth. He was living in Otsego Co., NY in 1800 and I believe had a son named William H. Hedges in 1801. Several Hedges sold out in Otsego between 1800-1810. They moved to what is now Yates & Steuben Counties, NY. I have copies of the sale agreement on Abraham’s property in Otsego Co. I have located the other Hedges in Yates/Steuben but cannot find hide nor hair of my Abraham. I believe these Hedges started out in NJ and came up through Orange Co., NY. Abraham is somehow connected with Sylvanus and Gideon Hedges from that area. I believe that Abraham is the father of my GGG Grandfather William H. Hedges but am having great difficulty proving it. Wm. H. Hedges was born in Otsego Co., NY on 24 Oct. 1801. He married Permelia Alden in Milo, Yates, NY on 20 Sep 1822 and then took his bride to Indiana where they lived their lives, raised their children, died and are buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jonathan HEDGES b abt 1816 MD & Hannah FOOR b abt 1832 PA, mar. 1850

Some Bedford County, PA newspapers announce the marriage of "Mr. Jno. Hedges" and "Miss Hannah Foor" of East Providence Twp., Bedford Co., PA, 5 Aug 1850. Another article states that "Mr. John Hedges" was of Frederick Co., MD. The marriage was performed by Samuel Haines, Esq.

In 1860 I find them in the following census:

CENSUS: 1860 Union Twp., Belmont Co., OH, p 124.
HEDGES, John K., 44y b MD, no occupation listed
", Hannah, 28y b PA, can't read or write
", Mary A., 8y b OH
", Franklin P., 7y b OH
", Martha, 4y b OH
", Lucretia, 7/12 b OH

I searched the Belmont Co., Ohio GenWeb website and there was nothing of worth on this surname.

I can't find the parents -- John or Hannah -- in 1870, though I DO find Mary, Franklin, and Martha all in Bedford Co., PA, residing separately at different residences as servants. In 1880, I found Lucretia (who I didn't find in 1870), in Bedford Co., PA, listed as a servant.

According to some very old info posted to the GenCircles.com website, John Hedges was born 1820 in Woodsboro, MD, and died 1883 in Fishertown, PA, s/o Moses and Catherine (STEICHER) HEDGES. Daughter Martha Jane was shown as being born in Belmont Co., OH, who married and divorced Harry James LIINDSEY in Everett, PA 1876.

I'm taking these dates very hesitantly, as the info also shows that John HEDGES and Hannah FOOR were married 13 Sep 1876 in Everett... which I know is incorrect. The parentage info of John HEDGES is obviously in error -- at least the dates -- as the person lsits John as being born in 1820, and the father as being born in 1821.

Being a FOOR researcher, I'm trying to figure out which Hanna Foor this is that married into this particular HEDGES line, and then follow their descendants.
My husband's family descends from the subjects mentioned. Lemuel M. Hedges b 1780 d 1869/buried in Benton County, Arkansas daughter Elizabeth Hedges b 1817/18 in Kentucky married James McCall b 1810/1811in Pennsylvania. I have these two families together in 1840 in Millier County, Misouri then they moved together to Benton County, Arkansas. I am looking for any connecting family members. I have two interesting pieces of Hedges family history (no documentation) that states our Hedges descend from "Sir Charles Hedges of Virginia who was an ambassador to or from Ireland or England; given a land grant by King for land in Virginia". Another source states that our Hedges descend from "Sir Charles Hedges (who) was knighted by the King and became a political refugee during the Cromwell era".

Hedges surname in Westmoreland, Indiana, or Cambria Co., Pa.

Trying to locate any info on any Hedges families from either Westmoreland, Indiana, or Cambria Counties, Pa. and especially on a Martha, or Mary Elizabeth Hedges, b. 3 May 1831 and married Samuel C. Martin. Apparently they moved from Pa. to Harrison Co., Mo. in 1886 and she died there on 13 April 1913. Also some Civil War Pension records on a Martin kin, mentions a Joseph Hedges living near New Florence, Westmoreland Co., Pa. Unknown if this Joseph is connected to Elizabeth Hedges?? Thanks,

Jane Hedges Patton/Hedgesville/Virginia and Ohio

I am a descendant of Jane Hedges, who married Benjamin B. Patton in Harrison County Va. in April 1939. They had several children including John S., Milton, Elmore, Sarah, Caroline, and Fletcher Capel(who I am descended from), among others. The lived in Miami/Quincy in Logan Twp. Ohio after being married and moved to Ritchie County W. V. between 1850 and 1860. My late grandmother always said that Hedgesville West Virginia was named after Jane's family. I haven't been able to figure out which Hedges she has descended from. Per various census reports, Benjamin (who she always called Basil) was born about 1812/1813 in Virginia and Jane was born about 1822/1823 in Ohio. There was a John Hedges in Logan County in 1840 who was of the right age to possibly be her father???? If there are any Hedgesville experts out there that can give me clues, it would be helpful...

Both Benjamin and Samuel II Hedges, sons of Jonas Hedges, had sons named John....possibly through this line????
HILLERY HEDGES (b. 1825, d. 1914) and descendants (MO-KY-TN)

HILLERY HEDGES married CORA ANN SKEEL before 1851. They were residing in Carondelet, MO. in 1849. HILLERY is reported to have been a "trainman" who returned to Kentucky "to live out his final days". They are believed to have had 3 children: LILLIE HEDGES, SAMUEL ROBERT HEDGES, and ELLA HEDGES.

ELLA (b. 1866, d. 1935) married SKEEL GLISSON, Sr. then her cousin TAYLOR G. HEDGES on December 25, 1895.

SAMUEL ROBERT HEDGES (b. bef. 1866 (?), d. 1914) had 5 children: ALFORD H. HEDGES, ELLA GERTRUDE HEDGES, SAMUEL E. HEDGES, HILLERY T. HEDGES, and POSEY GRANT HEDGES.

I would like to share info on Hillery, Cora, and their descendants.

REBECCA LONG SKEEL HEDGES (b. 1840 - d. after 1920)

REBECCA LONG married AMOS SKEEL in St. Francois Co., Mo. on September 07, 1864. They resided in Jefferson, then Washington County, Mo.

AMOS SKEEL was listed in the Jefferson Democrat on January 3, 1876, in the Land Delinquent Tax-List of Jefferson County, Mo. for the year 1875.

AMOS SKEEL shows in the Washington County census in 1880 Union Township. AMOS is a 38 year old farmer, his wife REBECCA is listed as 40 years old, keeping house. She was born in Missouri, her parents in Kentucky. Their son CHARLES was 8 years old, born in Missouri. (Family History Film #1254740; NA Film # T9-0740, p. 130 C)
I have no record of AMOS after this. REBECCA'S brother JOHN LONG and his family are enumerated on same page.

REBECCA shows in the 1920 KY Census as "REBECCA HEDGES, "aunt", an 81 year old widow, born in Missouri, was enumerated in the home of TAYLOR G. and ELLA HEDGES. (Spencer Co., KY, Goodwin Spring Precinct, Lily and Waterford Rd., Farm # 92. ED 150, p. 5B, lines 84-88. Enum. Jan. 12, 1920 by Bernard Lilly).

One LONG researcher who has shared data thought AMOS ran off leaving REBECCA, who then married a HEDGES. It is my belief AMOS died. (ELLA HEDGES was AMOS SKEEL's half-niece. Ella was the daughter of HILLERY and CORA SKEEL HEDGES--Ella married her cousin TAYLOR HEDGES). Another researcher has "Aunt Becky Skeel Hedges" listed in his data, but has no information on her other than name.

Would be thrilled to sort this out and learn what happened to Charles and Amos (dates and place of death), along with which Hedges Rebecca married. Will gladly share data on these families.
I just found out my great great grandfather's name - appears it is Thomas T. Hedges and his wife's maiden name was Hull. It is hard to read as it was written when my great grandfather Charles H. Hedges applied for a marriage license to Emma Jean Jones(Nees) and they got married March 13, 1887.

Is anyone connected or know anything?
