I'm fascinated by your story about this deed. My 3g grandfather, Martin V. Miller, was from Warrick Co IN. His father, Horatio Nelson Miller, was closely associated with the Hedges family -- even got arrested for "riot" with a couple of them! I find their names near one another in the land records also. Both the Millers and the Hedges intermarried with the Hudson and Hinman families. I had always assumed that Martin was named after Martin Van Buren, but have no proof and little record of the initial V. I guess I'll have to go back and study up on Martin Van Buren.

If you can share any further information with me about your branch of the Hedges family, I would be grateful. My aunt and I just returned from Warrick Co where we went to Millersburg, where the Millers settled. Because Miller was a common name, and because at least one other group of Millers was associated with both the Ohio/Butler/Daviess Co KY area and with Warrick and PIke Co, IN, it has been rather difficult to sort through all the info. However, I now think that there may be some links between the Ashby and Hedges family and the Millers that may predate their coming to Ohio Co KY.

I would love to hear from you!

Thank you for the information in your reply. I did find the 1969 entry regarding Naturalisation but not the earlier "change of name" article.
In my opinion Mr. and Mrs. Hegedus changed their name to Hedges as this is a convenient look-alike name and sounds similar.
Sue

The page no. is 6386 dated 19 June 1969
The actual entry is:
Hedges, Gyongyi (formerly Gyongyi Hegedus) ;
Hungary; Housewife; 2 Brackeribridge Drive,
South Ruislip, Middlesex. 21st April 1969.
Hedges, Leslie (formerly Laszlo Hegedus) ; Hungary ;
Plumber (Self-employed) ; 2 Brackenbridge Drive,
South Ruislip, Middlesex. 21st April 1969.
Hegedus, Gyongyi. See Hedges, Gyongyi.
Hegedus, Laszlo. See Hedges, Leslie.
If I recall correctly (tho' I may be wrong) this couple also appeared in an earlier addition when they actually changed their name but I didn't save that copy for some reason.
I hope this helps your study.

Hedges = Hegedus?

My family surname is Hedges but our ancestry is obscure other than we know they were Gypsies who were living in Kent, England at the turn of the 20th Century. I have discovered an entry in the London Gazettes of a couple of Hungarian immigrants who had applied to change their name by deed poll from 'Hegedus' to the anglicized 'Hedges'. Does anyone know if this was common?
The meaning of the name (fiddle player/repairer) would certainly fit in with the image of Hungarian Gypsies, however, I realise I may be barking completely up the wrong tree. I would love to know if anyone has an ancestor who also changed their name in this way.

I would like to make contact with any living relatives of Robert Hedges (died 1997) and Nola Smith Hedges (died 2000)

They lived in the Covington, Kentucky area, and had no children. I am seeking living relatives of Robert Hedges.

Nola and her sister Isabelle Smith were separated from their brother Pearl Smith (d. 1987) in 1913 after the death of their father (mother died in 1911). Nola and Isabelle were sent to an orphanage in Louisville, KY and Pearl was raised by other family members. Family members who did wish to care for two little girls, and the siblings lost contact with each other.

I recently made contact with descendants of Isabelle and have been able to gain some insight on Nola but would now really like to contact living relatives of the Hedges family.
Hedges Family, Missouri, USA

Hello all!

New to this, so please bear with me.

I think I have pretty much created a accurate family tree here in ancestry.com, trying to use available records and tracking names.

I'm trying to find if I have any living relatives that come from Missouri; the last two known persons from Missouri were:

- Garland R. Hedges (born in Kansas around 1907, and served in the US Navy during World War 2 in San Juan, PR);
- Homer W. Hedges (born in Missouri, brother of Garland Hedges);

Their parents were:

- Oris D Hedges (Father, born in 1886, Missouri), and was a Christian Minister;
- Lula Bell (Mother, born approx 1889 in Missouri).

Oris D Hedges parents, according to records, were:

- Philip Martin Hedges (Father, also known as Martin Hedges, born approx 1863 in Illinois, died in Aug 1903);
- Emily V Heath (Mother, born in Apr 1863 in Missouri)

The list keeps on, so please advise if anyone can help... I have Levi Hedges, then Caleb Hedges, then Peter Hedges...

I would especially love to know, as mentioned before, to see if I have any family out there... at the moment, my father, Garland Hedges, is 64 yrs old and in GREAT health, and I'm 40, so I wouldn't rula out a trip to the US if the moment comes.

Anyway, would love to hear from anyone out there! I would be willing to bet that at least on the late Hedges' we might be related somehow... it's the younger ones that I'm having trouble with.

Any info if information is available form the 1950's or 1960's Census is available? These would be the best bet for me to find relatives.

Many thanks, and sorry for the long post!

Have a wonderful and prosperous 2009!

Best regards,

Jorge Hedges
Toa Baja, Puerto Rico
USA

maximus966@hotmail.com

Hello Hedgesk!

I have been trying for many, many years see if I have relatives in the US.

Long story short... According to records, my father, Garland Roy Hedges (born in PR) is son of Garland Roy Hedges (born approx 1907 in Kansas, according to the 1920 US Census, and was in PR during WW2, US Navy) and Rina Gonzalez.

I do know that my grandfather had a brother (Homer W Hedges), and the relatives you have in the message through which I found you are also listed in the "family tree."

They were all concentrated in Missouri, so I guess we should be somehow related, probably directly...

I would LOVE to find out if I have cousins or the likes, since my father is only son, and has no prior history, so to speak (another subject).

Please let me know how I can contact you... my info is:

Jorge Roy Hedges
Toa Baja, PR
maximus966@hotmail.com

Please, contact me at your earliest convenience.

Many thanks in advance, and have a wonderful 2009!

Thanks again,

Jorge

PS: New to this ancestry sleuthing, so please bear with me.
I am trying to find out what happened to my Great Uncle. His father was George Hedges born 1872 and his mother was Sarah Hedges (nee Hill) born 1871. He appears in the birth records in 1903 but there isn't a death record between that year and 2005. I am also interested to find out what happened to Sarah.

Regards
Shaun

hello edie,
It is carol,a distant relative of sarah janes sister Emily. i am sorry that i cant help with your querry but a recent phone call from unknown family member revived my interest in the Hedges family. He said that Sarah Jane had re-married in 1924 @ Romford to a Theobald and was questioning if Sarah Jane had ever lived in Jamestown New York. I cant remember his name and very seldom use the computer anymore but did know we had sent messgaes before. When he phones again I will ask about any names I can pick up from messgaes on this site, in the hopes that it will aid you and another member of your family whose name i cant recall. Can you confirm anything about Sarah please.
many thanks Carol

Good evening Sue !

The quick answer is "yes" ! I had come to the same conclusion.

The elusive Ambrose is still unfound, but I have a lead at present, which might lead to something. I was contacted by a descendant of the William HEDGES & Ann HUMPHREYS family who thinks that Ambrose might be a brother of his GGGrandfather.
We are presently checking things out.

I sent you a message some while ago concerning Lilian Hedges, about whom I had received more information, but I never had a reply from you on the subject.
hi Sue, My line is on Joseph's side.
I am trying to find out more about William, as there are 2 William Hedges baptised in 1791 in Bradford on Avon. Everyone that I have contacted so far seems to pick up on the other William Hedges.
I suspect that they are not properly researching this matter and taking the easy way, but wrong.
Also I cannot find any baptism for their father (Thomas) in Bradford on Avon, even though on parish records for their marriage it states 'of this parish'.
Any help gratefully received.
I have my line 70% complete to the present day, so if you are on Joseph or Williams I may be able to fill some gaps.
CHRIS
I seen your post and thought I'd let you know that Brisco Hedges is buried at Greenbrier Baptist Church Cem. in Daviess co, Ky. The dates on his stone has b. 9-9-1843 and d. 12-9-1908, wife Lucy A. no last name given. I took pictures of all the Hedges stones but haven't gotten them developed yet. My brother also has a copy of a newspaper article that mentions Briscoe in it, about being in the war. I'm currently waiting for him to bring me the article!!If I can be of any help..just email me at blabai2@aol.com
