GIRARD – Catherine A. Shelby, 91, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio.(Mahoning County)

She was born Sept. 18, 1920, in “Smoky Hollow” Youngstown, the daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Grummel) Heban and attended St. Cyril and Methodius and graduated from The Rayen School, Youngstown, Ohio in 1938.

She was married to Peter P. Shelby in May of 1943 until his death in January of 1999.

She worked at the Ravenna Arsenal and Van Huffel Tube during World War II, was a 26 year employee of J.C. Penney, and a life-long member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Girard, Ohio.

She was the central hub of all family activity and her house was the setting for vast memories of holidays, Sunday breakfasts, and Wednesday night dinners.
She gave love freely but everyone sought her approval; approval that was perceived and measured by the way she dished your meal or the present position of one’s ornament on the family Christmas tree. But she would be proud of everyone in her family and actively engaged in their lives.

She was deeply involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a great inquisitor; always asking, “where are you going, what will you be doing and who will you be with?”

She is survived by her sister, Marge (Warren) Wellendorf; her daughters, Kathleen (Lynn) Miller of McDonald, Ohio and Jeanne (Don) Kemmler of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her sons, Joseph (Peggy) Shelby and David Shelby, both of Girard, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter P. Shelby; her son, Paul A. Shelby; and two daughters-in-law, Shelley A. Shelby and Norma Shelby.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25,2011 at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard, Ohio (Trumbull County).

Prayer services will be held at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. with funeral services to follow at St. Rose Church in Girard on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m.

Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown, Ohio
