Henry Head of Rhode Island - DNA

I'm 99% certain I'm a direct male-line descendant of Henry Head of Little Compton, Rhode Island (1647-1716), and I'd like to use Y-DNA to prove it. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, none of his other descendants have been tested by any of the genealogical DNA services.

If you're like me, and are waiting for others to "take the plunge" before you get tested, please reply to this post (online, not through email). If there are enough of us maybe we can motivate each other to get tested and post the results.

For info, I'm descended from a Henry Head of Plainfield, Connecticut who served in the CT Militia during the Revolution. He moved to Hartwick, Otsego Co., NY where he died c. 1826. Most of his descendants lived in Steuben Co., NY during the 1830s-1870s. My GGG-Grandfather (another Henry Head) served in the 104th NY Infantry during the Civil War.

I'm looking for descendants of other Head lines for comparison. I understand a number of the original Henry's descendants migrated to Dutchess, Monroe, and Livingston Counties (New York State) before the Revolution. Others remained in Little Compton into the 1800s. The more samples we have from different lines, the better!

Happy Head-Hunting

I am a descendent of Henry Head of Little Compton. My ancestors moved to Pine Plains, NY (Dutchess County)and Canandaigua, NY then to Madison Wisconsin. Everyone in my family has the middle name of Head. Have you visited the Head family cemetery in Little Compton? My great grandfather, Louis Head settled in Madison Wisconsin, so most of my family grew up around either Madison or the Chicago area.

It's possible, that's very close to where my Head family lived. Who is the earliest Head on your family tree, and when/where did he live?

I know that several Heads migrated to Dutchess County NY before the Revolution. Which one are you descended from?

I have been to the Head cemetery in Little Compton, and hope to get to town for another research trip soon. I think my next focus will be on land records, although there are some interesting legal documents in Taunton as well...

Interesting that after being born and raised in the midwest you ended up so close to your ancesters! The same thing happened to me, I was born and raised in Michigan and now live less than an hour from the town where my ancester lived during the Revolution!

Hi, I live in Steuben Co., NY and my GGGgrandfather's name was Henry HEAD. He was married to a girl by the name of Catherine Brewer/Brower. They had four children that we know of; Lewis C. HEAD, Ellen HEAD Whitford, Sarah HEAD Amidon and Peter HEAD. They all stayed in Steuben Co. except for Lewis who relocated to Iowa. There were alot of HEAD Families around Steuben during the 1800's and they all lived near each other. I am quite certain that if your name was HEAD and you lived in Steuben Co., then you were related back then. There was one other HEAD family that lived in a different part of Steuben that I don't think connected but all of the others were related,I'm sure.. I would love to be involved in the DNA project. I have male relatives that would give a DNA sample it's just too bad that it costs so much! Other than that I think everyone would like to know their roots. You mentioned the 104th NY Infantry. I think they mustered some of their troops from Cohocton, Steuben Co., NY. Is that where your Henry HEAD enlisted? If so, I would love to see your family tree as I'm certain it connects to mine. Was your Henry HEAD's father Daniel HEAD? If so he lived in Fremont, Steuben Co., NY which is really close to my relatives but I haven't been able to connect him. Do you know who Daniel's father was? In the 1860 census of Steuben Co. Daniel and his family lived two doors down from Nathan Whitford who was Ellen HEAD Whitfords son, my GGgrandmothers Sarah HEAD Amidon's nephew. I think that maybe your Daniel HEAD and my Henry HEAD were brothers? Let me know what you think. Linda

Try the Sorenson Project. It is FREE. Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. They will not hand lead you like Family Tree DNA does, but they are free. You can always get someone in your group or even a friend to help you to figure out which result is yours if you have a problem with it. You contact them. They send you a test kit. You return it. When they obtain the result, they post it to their web site. They do not notify you that the result is in. They tell you how to retrieve the result.

Yes, my Henry Head's father was Daniel Head. Daniel Head's death certificate (Grayling, MI, 1905) stated that his father's name was George Head. There was a George Head (1775-1850ish) also living in Fremont, married to Amy (possibly Page) Head.

I'm fairly certain that our Head line came via Otsego Co., NY. There was a Henry Head who served in the Connecticut militia during the revolution, and died in Otsego Co. circa 1826. I believe your Henry was a son or grandson of that Henry, making him George Head's younger brother or nephew.

I'm pretty certain we're related, my problem is tying our Henry Head of the revolution to the immigrant Henry Head (born England 1647, died in Little Compton RI 1716). I need to match my DNA to one of Henry's confirmed lines to verify that our Henry came from their Henry - if that makes any sense.

I appreciate your interest, and look forward to exchanging info with you in the future.

I'm researching Solomon Head 1792-1866. I believe his family came from Rhode Island to Dutchess New York where he was born. He married Sally Coon then later moved to Albion, Wisconsin. They were Seventh Day Baptists. I can not find the parents of Solomon Head to save my life. One artice suggested that his father died when he was six years old. Do you know if there's any way to trace his parents?
