Hi, I just read your query and Annette Campbell from the Greene County NY(#2) local web has 88 printed pages of Heads and maybe half relate to those from Steuben County. I am also related to some of those Heads and I have my family on Ancestry under Heads of Upstate New York. Ron Head

Ron, thank you for your message. I have corresponded with Ms. Campbell as well. Since I originally wrote this post I have made a DNA match on FTDNA with another descendant of Henry Head of Little Compton, as well as a Head descendant from Cumbria County, England. I'm interested to know your connection to the New York Heads. As I don't pay for a membership here I can't view your tree.

Alan, Thanks for corresponding. I also have my tree on the LDS website titled The Heads of Upstate New York. I am under the belief that almost all the Head families from upstate New York are the descendants from the original Head's from Little Compton. In reading what you have posted is it true that the Heads from Virginia are not directly related to the Compton Heads..Thank you for all your ancestry endeavors. Ron Head

It's been quite a few years since these posts were made, so I hope people are still being notified, or interested in this line of inquiry.

Jerome R. Head was my grandfather. My family has an essay that is similar to the book mentioned and has similar content. I do have a pdf of the book for anyone who is interested. As far as I know no one has been able to trace Solomon Head's father, so to able to see the letter you have would be interesting. I don't remember my grandfather ever mentioning that he had found him (Solmon's father). This would also be crucial to linking my family with the Heads of Rhode Island; although DNA would probably be the way.

All of that being said I do have information on Solmon's family descendants, should anyone be interested.

Ron, I agree that the Head families of New York - or at least those in New York prior to 1850 - were descended from Henry Head of Little Compton. DNA evidence is clear that the Heads from Virginia were of a completely unrelated line. I am descended from a Henry Head who lived in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT in 1775, later moving to Adams, Berkshire Co., MA before settling in Hartwick, Otsego Co., NY. He was the patriarch of the Otsego and Steuben County branches of Heads. I believe he is the Henry, son of William Head of Little Compton (deceased) who was mentioned in the will of William's father in law, John Horswell.

Alan, Thanks for the information. I never looked into the Heads from Hartwick even though they only lived 20 miles or so from my family in Otsego County and 30+ miles from my family in Schoharie County.. Many county records of the latter have recently been destroyed by flooding. I do want to check on the Heads that lived in Middleburg (Schoharie County) in the 1800's to see how they may be related to my family. Take Care, Ron Head
