Re: Waage Tysnes, Norway

Wilhelm's father was Lars Larsen and his mother was Mathilde Kristofersdatter. Gjersvik was the name of the farm where they lived in the district of Hordaland, Norway known as Tysnes.

Gjersvik would have been their address and sometimes emigrants chose to use such an identifier as a 'surname' in the new country. Also in the 1920's Norway decided that families should CHOOSE a family name and no longer use the ancient traditional patronymic naming -- some chose to use their address/farm name - some chose to use some form of their old patronymic.

You can see the family in the 1910 Norwegian census -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1910&...

Wilhelm's birth/baptismal record in the Tysnes church records is found here -
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=4532&i...

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns:

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na12.html
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm
http://www.norwayheritage.com/norwegian-names.htm
http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/farms.htm

The 1910 census above includes Mathide's widowed father -- Kristofer Olsen. Then taking the identifying information about him from that enumeration it is possible to find him in the 1875 Norwegian census --
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1875&...

Wilhelm was giving his patronymic name as Larsen when he sailed from Bergen in 1921 but he also uses Gjersvik as an additional identifier that was requested by the police collecting the names of emigrants -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Elias K. Haugland/ Malvern, Arkansas

I'm the Great Granddaughter of Elias K. Haugland b. 1886 and Annie ? b. abt. 1892

Elias K. Haugland and Annie had 5 children:
Dewey b. 1911
Lester b. 1914 married Foy L. Frazier
Ella M. b. 1920 married George L. Hughes
Gladies B. b. 1924
Maxine N. b. 1928 (my grandmother) m. William E. McMullen

Elias's mother was Perlina or Polina born about 1869, which I'm guessing is probably Paulina, last name unknown. And fathers name still unknown.

Perlina was married three times.

The first time she was married to ? Haugland. This name is found listed in various forms on different census's and documents. (Hoglin, Hoagland, Haugland, Hagland) they had the four children.

Wm. S. (William) Haugland b. 1884 (listed as Hoglin)
Elias K. Haugland b. 1886
Mary O. Haugland b. 1889
Susie A. Haugland b. 1890

I then find her married again to Joseph B. Cook b. 1872, in Delta County, Texas. They had four children:

Allie B. Cook b. 1895
Hattie (or Hettie) E. Cook b. 1896
Joseph B. Cook b. 1898
Martin E. Cook b. 1901

Then I find her again back in Hot Spring County remarried again around 1902-03 to a William H. Spurlin. b. 1861 They had four children:

Mamie M. Spurlin b. 1904 who married Charles F. Crow
Rosa L. Spurlin b. 1906
Gracie A. Spurlin b. 1908
Thomas J. Spurlin b. 1911

If anyone can please help me fill in the blanks, It would be very appreciated. I would love to know who Elias married, what was Annie's last name? And I would like to know Elias's parents name; fathers whole name, mothers maiden name. Or any other information you would please share with me.

Thank you Stephanie

It sounds like we are searching for the same ancestors. Based on the Kvinnherad book, Vol. 3, it looks like our line also goes back to the 1600s. I have verified some of this information by looking at the original parish records in the Archives in Bergen.
What is the immigration date of your Hauglands? Ours is 15 Apr 1878 from Bergen on the National Line when Jens and Kristi emigrated with some of their children. Two other children came a year later.

I am Maxine's grand-daughter. Since my first post on the Hauglands, I've learned that Polina's maiden name is Allen, and she was from the Antioche/ Deroche area the best I can tell.

I have also learned that Doktor/Dok/Doctor Haughland was her first husband. He also had a brother named Abe. Other than that, I'm still piecing bits and pieces together.

Write to me at yarbroughs at rocketmail dot com, and we'll see what we can figure out.

Thanks, STephanie

It was interesting to visit the old (over 100 years) boat house with a couple of 100+ year old skiffs in storage.
Took a few photos.

I am the great-granddaughter of George Dewey Haugland (b. 8/8/1910). He married Pauline Davis (b. 5/17/1913) on 7/25/1931. I've been trying to put together a family tree, and your post has helped me greatly. Most of the information I could provide you is from Dewey on down. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Well Ralph, it looks like there may have been several Nils Nilsens in and around Bergen.
My father Hjalmar Haugland was born in Bergen in 1904. His grandfather was Nils Nilsen from the Haugland farm in Bergen. I don't however have any of the other names you listed.

I have Nils born 24 Feb. 1799, married to Ingeborge Neilsdtr Jonsen. They have three children Ingebrecht 1829, Nils Johan 1843 and Carl Olai 1851.

You can be sure I'll keep your post handy just in case I come across a connection. Hilsen, Helen Haugland Pratti

We decided that some where, way back we must have been "kin"..although we haven't yet found a link - our only ties are our names and area of Norway..who knows, we might find some of our relatives are related....you can be sure, I'll keep looking for your names in my tree.
