My name is Karen Haugland Solhjem. My grandfather was Knute Melius Haugland and was married to Laura Akre. My Dad was Anton Haugland. Born 1906 and died July 1995. I have three sisters and one brother. My brother's name is Arthur.

My husband, Allen Solhjem and I will be in Norway this summer with Juven tours out of Fargo, ND. We live in Fargo, ND. Please reply to my post.

Wilhelm's father was Lars Larsen and his mother was Mathilde Kristofersdatter. Gjersvik was the name of the farm where they lived in the district of Hordaland, Norway known as Tysnes.

Gjersvik would have been their address and sometimes emigrants chose to use such an identifier as a 'surname' in the new country. Also in the 1920's Norway decided that families should CHOOSE a family name and no longer use the ancient traditional patronymic naming -- some chose to use their address/farm name - some chose to use some form of their old patronymic.

The 1910 census above includes Mathide's widowed father -- Kristofer Olsen. Then taking the identifying information about him from that enumeration it is possible to find him in the 1875 Norwegian census --

Wilhelm was giving his patronymic name as Larsen when he sailed from Bergen in 1921 but he also uses Gjersvik as an additional identifier that was requested by the police collecting the names of emigrants -

I am looking for any information I can about my Great-Great Grandmother Marie (Mary) Haugland. She was born in Norway on May 14, 1887 and Died around october 18, 1919, in Karlstad, Minnesota. She married Conrad Bernhard Anderson in 1908 in Minnesota. She had five children: Ingvold (b.1909), Agnes (b.1910), Viola (b.1912), Wesley (b.1915), and Ernest (b.1917). She Immigrated to the US between 1887 and 1908.

The only information I have on her is that she died when my great grandma viola was about 6. So any kind of information about her parents/siblings would be great.

Martha Houghland-Hannestad was my great great aunt. She was married to my maternal great great uncle Evan Hannestad. She lived until 102 and lived in her own home by herself until she fell in her basement and broke her hip. I have so many stories to share.

By the way, Jim was my step-father for 50 yrs, and his kids, (Brenda Haugland) failed to remember my mother and her's as Morris being her last name. She Helped get the business started with my dad before any of Jim's kids were born. My Mother was a very hard working woman , along side of my dad, Jim. She passed away on Jan. 03, 1997. and Jim passed a few years later after he married Vicki.

My cousin traced our Haugland surname to Stord Norway. John M Haugland (my father, Born. Galveston, Tx)) 1909-1975 to John BJ Haugland 1827-1931 (my grandfather, B. Skudneshavn, Norway) to Jon Storkersen Haugland B. 1827-1905 Stord, Norway, Deceased Skudneshavn, Norway, to Styrk Bardsen B. 1793 married to Anna Bergsdtr Heleseter, daughter of Berge and Brita Torbjornsdtr, to Bard Styrkerson B. 1766 Norway married to Abelone Jenstr?? Have been to Norway to visit relatives in Skudneshavn and Stord, and yesterday a relative (ship captain) from Skudneshavn was in Houston and spent the day with us in Conroe, TX.

Haugland is a Viking name but comes from a place. There are 2 or 3 Hauglands in Norway. My family comes from an Island outside of Bergen. Haug means hill or high rocky place. I'm sure some other Norwegians will enlighten you on this.

you spell haugland with one E in it. thats how my family use to spell it but when they came to the usa they took out that E. i think alot of familys did that. i dont no why.

Here is an Gustav Olaj Haugland, with patronym (i.e. father's name) Kristiansen (meaning he was son of Kristian Haugland. Emigrating from the port of Bergen on Feb 22 1912 on Cunard Line, heading for Wisconsin. It says "reiser til familie", which translates to travelling to family (in the US).

Here he is with his parents and siblings in the 1900-census of Haus parish (not too far from Bergen), Hordaland county:

Father Kristian Johannesen Haugland b. 1859 in Alversund parish, mother Marta Jonstr. b. 1857 in Hammer (Hamre) parish.

Siblings Johan (1890), Hjalmar (1892) and Konrad (1897), all three including Gustav are said to be born in Manger parish (not found among the christened there), but are registered in both Haus and Hammer (Hamre) (temporary residence - visiting his mothers parents) in 1900-census.

Mons and Clara Haugland were my g-g-grandparents. I am also looking for info about them. Their daughter Alice was my g-grandmother. She immigrated from Norway to ND in 1915. Then later moved to Puyallup, WA, where she died.

Elias K. Haugland and Annie had 5 children:

Elias's mother was Perlina or Polina born about 1869, which I'm guessing is probably Paulina, last name unknown. And fathers name still unknown.

Perlina was married three times.

The first time she was married to ? Haugland. This name is found listed in various forms on different census's and documents. (Hoglin, Hoagland, Haugland, Hagland) they had the four children.

Mary O. Haugland b. 1889
Susie A. Haugland b. 1890

I then find her married again to Joseph B. Cook b. 1872, in Delta County, Texas. They had four children:

Martin E. Cook b. 1901

Then I find her again back in Hot Spring County remarried again around 1902-03 to a William H. Spurlin. b. 1861 They had four children:

Rosa L. Spurlin b. 1906
Gracie A. Spurlin b. 1908
Thomas J. Spurlin b. 1911

If anyone can please help me fill in the blanks, It would be very appreciated. I would love to know who Elias married, what was Annie's last name? And I would like to know Elias's parents name; fathers whole name, mothers maiden name. Or any other information you would please share with me.

Hauglands from Kvinnherad

Looking for Haugland relatives from Kvinnherad (Hordaland), particularly in the Uskedal/Rosendal region. Our Hauglands came from Gnr. 125. They emmigrated from Bergen harbour on 15 April 1878 and settled in Iowa and Minnesota.

It sounds like we are searching for the same ancestors. Based on the Kvinnherad book, Vol. 3, it looks like our line also goes back to the 1600s. I have verified some of this information by looking at the original parish records in the Archives in Bergen.
What is the immigration date of your Hauglands? Ours is 15 Apr 1878 from Bergen on the National Line when Jens and Kristi emigrated with some of their children. Two other children came a year later.

I would love to swap information, if your still interested. I am Maxine's grand-daughter. Since my first post on the Hauglands, I've learned that Polina's maiden name is Allen, and she was from the Antioche/ Deroche area the best I can tell.

I have also learned that Doktor/Dok/Doctor Haughland was her first husband. He also had a brother named Abe. Other than that, I'm still piecing bits and pieces together.

Hilda (Ragnhild) Ronning (Rodningen) is a, until recently unknown part of my family.
As it appears, she was my great great grandmothers daughter born outside marriage before she married my great great grandfather. She had one half brother (my great grandfather), and four half sisters; two of which also went to USA (Ambjor and Marit).
Are you a descendant of Hilda?

He came to America in 1911 from Bergen, Norway.
He first came to Minot, North Dakota, and later

We had a very nice visit to the old "Haugland" estate last Sept '07. Met some Haugland's still living there. Would have liked to have had more time to explore the area. It was interesting to visit the old (over 100 years) boat house with a couple of 100+ year old skiffs in storage.

I am the great-granddaughter of George Dewey Haugland (b. 8/8/1910). He married Pauline Davis (b. 5/17/1913) on 7/25/1931. I've been trying to put together a family tree, and your post has helped me greatly. Most of the information I could provide you is from Dewey on down. Well Ralph, it looks like there may have been several Nils Nilsens in and around Bergen.
My father Hjalmar Haugland was born in Bergen in 1904. His grandfather was Nils Nilsen from the Haugland farm in Bergen. I don't however have any of the other names you listed.

I have Nils born 24 Feb. 1799, married to Ingeborge Neilsdtr Jonsen. They have three children Ingebrecht 1829, Nils Johan 1843 and Carl Olai 1851.
