Hattaway(s) of Leake & Neshoba County, Mississippi

Nancy (Unknown maiden name) married Arnold after Hattaway, which is why Christopher Columbus Arnold was not listed with her as a son in 1870.

Christopher has no relationship to Nancy other than as stepson. Nancy is the birth mother of Edward E, John W, & Albert Arthur Hattaway-Hataway.

The 1880 census shows Christopher as the farmer in Dixon, Neshoba, Mississippi, Nancy as widow keeping house, and Albert Hattaway-Hataway as working on farm.

I am still in search of Nancy's maiden name and the name of her first husband, Hattaway; who becomes lost to history at the time of the Civil War. I am the great grand daughter of Albert Amos Hattaway (which he changed to Hataway).

D'Anne, I did not see your name earlier in my email response directly to you via yahoo. I too have many questions about the Hataway(s) and sooo hope that together, we can at least get our foot into the door for this heritage.

I did sit for a long afternoon visit with my grandmother, Clara Annette Hataway Chitty just a month before she had her stroke from which she never awakened prior to her death. My husband and I had two young children at the time, so it was a rare opportunity to spend time with her along while visiting in DeRidder, Louisiana.

Much of what I know and copies of old family photos are a result of that one last visit. We sat together, curled upon her bed going through boxes and boxes of old photos and me writing on a notepad as much and as fast as I could, to obtain this history.

I never saw her alive after that visit; so precious was my time with her, telling me the old stories of my family heritage. Oh, to go back in time and make those opportunities happen more often. I now am attempting to do just that in four seperate books of the four sets of grandparents of myself and my husband for our own four grandchildren. I want them to know the people who preceeded them in this life and made them who they are today; four precious, perfect, children. Of course we are Pop & Nana; so perfect they will always be to us...

I am looking forward to our shared knowledge of our family's past...

As you can tell from my previous postings; I am the grand-daughter of Clara Annette Hataway Chitty.

Do you know who were the parents of Albert Amos Hataway? I know his mother was Nancy (Unknown); however, she remarried widower, Anderson Arnold after the death of the Hataway father of her three sons; Edward E Hataway, John W Hataway, & Albert Amos Hataway. Nancy's stepson was Christopher Columbus Arnold 1856-1917.

I will check your site for photos; I have several posted as well on the public Albert Arthur Hataway Family Tree...

We had Indian ancestry verbal history stories concerning the Chitty family; however, I have not found documentation to support that as fact. I had not heard of any Indian heritage stories on the Hataway family at all...

I am still not having any success at all in finding the father of Albert Amos Hataway (Clara Annette Hataway Chitty's father). Albert's mother was named Nancy and together they had three sons:
Edward E Hataway 1857 –
John W Hataway 1859 –
Albert Amos HATAWAY 1865 – 1926
It is my assumption that our Hataway 2x’s great grandfather died or went missing during the Civil War. I have not yet looked for him in Civil War Records for Mississippi. However, if he did indeed die in the Civil War, Nancy would have been eligible for benefits following the Civil War and would be listed as such. Civil War took place 1861-1865 and perhaps she fell through the cracks and did not receive benefits. Her two older sons, Edward E & John W Hataway are lost to history as well.
Nancy married again after her Hataway husband is no longer listed with her and their three sons, in 1870 in Newton, Mississippi when our great grandfather Albert is only 5 years of age. Widowed Nancy (age 34) married England born, widower, John Anderson Arnold (age 40) about 1875 in Mississippi; however, she is lost to history after 1880 where she is listed as widowed again in Dixon, Neshoba, Mississippi.

Name References: Hataway, Callahan, Risher, Chitty, Flowers, Niblett, Polvado, Morris, & Harp.

Any help with the Hataway family line listed below would be greatly appreciated. All beyond Albert Amos Hataway is unclear prior to his age of 5 years, at which time his father is already out of the picture assumable deceased.

The 1870 census shows residence as Township 8 Range 10, Newton, Mississippi and five year old Albert Arthur is in the Hattaway household. Mother, Nancy age 33, Edward E age 13, John W age 11, and Albert Hattaway age 5.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know anything about the father of Albert Amos Hataway... I only had the name Albert on my radar for our Great Grandfather's middle name; however, my eldest sister remembers our Grandmother, Clara Annette Hataway Chitty telling her that his middle name was Amos... Either way; we still do not know the name of his father...

This lineage includes the family names of Risher, Callahan, Hataway, & Chitty...

I will soon be receiving the DNA results for my Uncle, Troy Milton Chitty, the only living sibling of my father, Jessie Leonard Chitty 1921-1999.

Hopefully, this test will resolve our many questions concerning the heritage of my great grandfather, Albert Amos Hataway 1865-1926. I will be checking to see if this ties into your heritage as well; hopefully we will find our long sought after answers.

I am the granddaughter of Edward Hataway; yes you are of Irish descent, Albert's wife was Leona Callahan.... I always heard the indian part also,but never have found anything to prove it. I have some letters that Aunt Margaret sent copies of to me many years ago. I have also email Leah, we need to get together and share info.

Annie Mae Hataway is my grandmother on my father's side. I do remember meeting Aunt Margaret they called her Aunt Mog. I also have pictures of Annie with Clara. I have been told that my grandmother was part Apache Indian as well as Irish. If anyone has any more information about them please feel free to send me private emails.

My husband is a decendant of John Michael Johnston born in Harris County, Texas on 03-09-1947. Born to parents Cornelia B. Hataway (3-5-1922 to 9-17-2000) and Robert Johnston (05-21-1920 to 08-14-1998). I have researched and found Cornelia's mother, also Cornelia, was a SMART, but want to make sure I am on the right track before proceeding any further.

looking to verify a Mattie C/See McKinney, born abt 1878 in TX, who some have on their family trees here. would be daughter of John Wesley McKinney (1832-1923) & Sarah 'Sallie' Hearne (1838-?).

i have verified a son M. Lee McKinney (1879-1952), would be brother of Mattie See McKinney. he is on a few census reports, but Mattie is not on any following her birth.

i found something online that she married unknown Hataway or Hathaway, but am unable to find anything further to validate Mattie C/See McKinney.

HA**AWAY DNA Project

We've had quite a bit of progress in the last couple of years on the HA**AWAY DNA Project. While we still have a few participants seeking family matches, two American families have emerged as having a rather large number of descendants. While this doesn't necesarily mean these are the largest HA**AWAY clans in the USA, it does indicate two "pockets" where these ancestors settled.

The largest group so far of matching participants is what we call the Enon Hall/Pitt Co, NC Clan. Enon Hall is a plantation in Lancaster Co, VA which was purchased by the Hathaway family (perhaps originally Hadaway) in the mid 1700s. While the exact connection is still unknown, there is an undeniable DNA match to a group most commonly spelled Hattaway. Similarly, my Hadaway family of North Georgia is genetically related, although we came to GA from Halifax Co, NC.

The secong group, not related to the group above, has been labeled the Talbot Co, MD Clan. This family apparently descends from Rowland Haddaway, who immigrated to Virginia in the 1600s, but relocated to Maryland.

We invite anyone seeking their HA**AWAY roots to join our study. Because this is a Y-DNA Project, participants must be males with direct HA**AWAY ancestry. Generally, this means a qualified participant will be a male still carrying the HA**AWAY name.

Do you have any Leggett in your family tree? I am a Leggett descendent and I have CMT Type 1X. It came down from my great grandparents (probably gr grandmother) who lived in Van Zandt County, TX in the 1880s. I am willing to share info if you are interested.

We are distant cousins. I'm the grand daughter of Edward Emmitt Hataway, my father is his oldest son Morris. We have not had any diagnosed cases like yours.
My father has talked about Clara and the Chitty's in LA, but I never met her. I did know Shorty very well, he and Ed married sisters Valta and Othella; and remember Amos,I believe Margaret is still alive, but I'm sure what kind of shape she is in. Risher died very young (from an accident) and is buried in Big Springs.
I have looked for information Albert, but have not had much luck. The Callahan side has pretty good records.
I live in the DFW area and their are lots of Hataway's in West Texas.

Leona Delphene Callahan was born October 12, 1875 in Clarke County, MS, died 1920
When she was a baby her family moved to Neshoba County
1892 married Albert Arthur Hataway in Neshoba County, MS born 1866 in Leake or Neshoba, MS, died June 30, 1926
1895 immigrated to Texas in a covered wagon; however, in 1901 or 1902 moved back to MS for one year
1903 moved to Big Springs, TX, where both are buried

I am a Hataway and was born in Vicksburg, MS. My grandmother was Mamie Lee Hataway, married to Enzley Hataway. She passed away in 2003. She has a daughter named Jeannie Hataway, along with several other children. My father, Mamie's son, Donald Hataway was born in Vicksburg but now lives in Louisianna. Maybe we are related.

Jennie Moreland Hataway is my grandmother. She married Louis Grady Hataway. They are both deceased now, but lived in Vicksburg, Mississippi the latter part of their lives.
I have a sister, Janie Moreland Hataway, who now lives in Memphis, Tn.

I am looking for any info on Berta Maudelle Hataway who was married to Robert B. Kent. She was about 65 years old and the marriage was short. Robert died in 1970. They lived in Houston, Texas during the late part of the 60's. Does anyone recognize these names or have any information regarding them. Thanks, Joyce

Hathaway/Hattaway/etc from NY to GA... HELP PLS

I have been searching fruitlessly for an ancestor named James Hathaway (last name spelled differently at different times).
He was born in New York around 1808 or 1818. Census dates vary.
At some point he moved to GA and in 1847 married Sarah "Sallie" Thigpen who was born in NC. Their children:
-Elizabeth J, abt 1847
-Nancy A, abt 1849

Heres where things get confusing, in the 1860 census they still had their two daughters but three boys had been added, all with the last name Ashley, which is confounding since the descendant I go through is one of them! The boys:

-James, abt 1854 (who possibly died or moved out since he is only mentioned in the 1860 Census)
-William W, abt 1856
-William S, abt 1856 (twin to the other William. One of them is my ancestor who will later be known as William H).

Anyway, Im looking for info on James Hathaway and his parents as well as info on the Ashley boys. Im completely baffled so anything will help.

Hello I need some help please. My Grandmother Bessie Leona Hataway was born in Alabama in 1891 and died in around the Fremont Calif. area in 1979. She was Full Blooded Choctaw. I do not no if her maiden name was Hataway or not but I do believe so. I am waiting for her Death Cerit.. I only met her one time but she cried when she saw me.
