George Pennel married Margaret Hasting. Their children were John and Minnie.

1860 Beverly Township lists:

Hasting: Solomon 50, Susan 46, John 19, Wesley 15, James 12, David 5, Narcissa 6 months.

next door:

Pennel: John 27, (can't read) 25, Martha 6, Mary 4, George 2, James one month.

several houses away:

Pennel: George 20, Margaret 18.

Richfield Township 1850:

Pennell:

Casssandry 56, Mariah A. 20, John A. 15, Delila 16, George 10.

That is from the researcher, if that helps you. I am not sure what your question is.

QUOTE from Solomon Hasting's will. Word for word. Second paragraph, first page.

" First I Give and bequeath to Mary S. Pennel at my death all my money goods and chattles all of my personal property after the payment of any just debts and funeral expenses. January 3rd 1899 Solomon Hasting "

Did you look up the articles in the Quincy newspaper?

Not sure what more to say.

____ PS added, did not want to 'leave you hanging' _____

I just quickly looked again and this is where it says granddaughter, if this helps you decide what to believe. I had this in my digital files so this must be where I put the pieces together first.

1900 census Richfield Township IL

Hastings:

Solomon (head of household) age 82, farmer, he and both parents born Maryland
Pennell, Mary S. (granddaughter) age 37, housekeeper (BORN DEC 1862) born IL, both parents born Ohio
Pennell, Adaline (granddaughter) (I think they must have meant great granddaughter but I can't say for sure.) age 17 (no occupation listed), she and both parents born Illinois

Next to Solomon's farm was Jessie Predmore, as you know the Predmores married into the Hastings line in that part of IL a few times...

Next to the Predmore farm was George Wesley Hastings (Solomon's son) and his family.

That census is on Ancestry.com.

If you (still don't believe me) look up the articles at the Quincy online newspaper archive - which is easy and free if you have some spare time - you will find the articles about Solomon's will. It lists Mary Pennell or if memory serves it says his granddaughter as well...I don't know if we found out whose daughter she was, I might find time to dig for that if you wanted me to. (But please find the articles first.)

My guess is she is the one who most needed a place to live and Solomon was a widower, the boys all had their own farms and families. At any rate that's what the will says. Notice at around the same time Solomon made his will, Mary Pennell was living with him as his housekeeper. And the census of 1900 calls her his granddaughter. Solomon died in 1909 (you can find his obituary online by the way, via google) the will left everything, but everything to Mary.

I can't speak for the 'will abstract' I have not seen it. Perhaps someone had it confused with land records. I think he did sell some of his farm to three sons. (Don't quote me on that.)
