I realize this is an old post, however ... I could not help but to reply! I was adopted and met my birth Mother about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, due to her condition, she was unable to provide me to much family history, although... I appear to be 1 of the youngest living in both lines... Hassett / Roglers!

My Maternal Grand Mother was a Hassett (Mae), born in 1896 Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa, Michigan. Passed in Petosky, Emmet, Michigan.

Her Father (my G Grand Father) was: Thomas J. Hassett born in 1868 in Ireland. Passed in 1941 • Chippewa, Chippewa, Michigan. Married to Anna (Annie) Murphy Hassett (1875-1943)

His Father (my G G Grand Father) was: Thomas J. Hassett Born in 1840 • Limerick, Limerick, , Ireland Passed in 1918 • Sault Ste Marie, Chippewa, Michigan. Married to Bridge Mc Mahon (1842-1907)

His Father (my 3rd G Grand Father was: Thomas Hassett Born 1810 • County, Clare, Ireland. Passed 1934 • Ireland. Married to Mary O'Connor born in Ireland 1810.

Feel free to reach out to me to compare/provide additional info to one another :)
SCinTN2@gmail.com

Re: James HASSETT wife Mary MACDONALD - Buffalo NY - ca1850

My John Hassett b. 1806 Ireland & Catharine Batterby b.c.1800 Ireland emigrated from Dublin & arrived at Castle Garden NYC on March 26, 1849. They brought 4 children, Ellen b.1836, Mary b.1841, John Jr b.1843. & Catherine b.1847. There were other Hassetts on the same ship- name spelled either Hasset or Hassit in immigration records. My family settled in Genesee Co, NY - LeRoy, later Bergen. Another Hassett family settled in Stafford, Genesee Co. In 1850, there is a teenage Hugh Hassett who is living with John & Catharine, but he moves to Stafford and lives with that family, settling in the Stafford area in adulthood. I am aware of Buffalo, Erie Co. Hassetts and have wondered if they are related. The Buffalo Irish Hunger Memorial has several bricks engraved to Hassett ancestors.

My 2 y/o Catherine Hassett died on ship 2 days prior to arrival. Ellen & John Jr. never married & are buried with parents in LeRoy. Mary, my gg-grandmother, is the only one to marry had 4 Moore children, at least one of whom settled in the Buffalo area. I have a picture of Mary. I am especially hoping to find brother or siblings of John Sr. b.1806 Ireland. I'd like to know what county they came from and take the tree farther back. Regards from Upstate.

Are you aware of GEDmatch? It is a free site with no premium so there is no advertising to get you to upgrade. Folks who tested with (almost?) any testing company can upload their results to GEDmatch and you are matched with everyone else who uploaded from all other companies. I tested with FTDNA and I have uploaded to GEDmatch.

My Hassetts were from County Westmeath but I suspect my 3x-great-grandfather John Hassett may have come from another part of Ireland. We also have strong connection with the Westmeath family but it is not 100% certain they are ours.

Hello Anne,

I am currently researching on behalf of a Hassett descendant, here in Australia. Henry Jerome Hassett was her Grandfather and Marguerite Coyle her Grandmother.

She has told me that the story goes, once Henry Hassett married Marguerite Coyle, he was not legitimately divorced or separated from Margaret Pennycook. Apparently after this incident, Kathleen ran away to England to stay with distant relations. Marguerite, Kathleen's step mother, tried to find her but also could not find her, she did not appear in any census.

I hope this helps, do you have much on Henry Jerome Hassett, i have researched him and his 3rd Wife in detail. He also had a wife before Margaret Pennycook and Marguerite Coyle, apparently it was a Catherine??

This is just hearsay, oral history but i am unsure as to the foundations.
If you would like more information, do not hesitate to reply.

Thanks

Carissah

My Great great grand father was Richard Hassett, who mainly lived at Yass NSW. While this Richard Hassett was living at Yass, I have found two more Hassetts baptised at St Augustine’s Church Yass NSW Register as follows:
Ref. No 3034 baptised 31.12.1860, birth 1830, Abode: Wagga Wagga, child: James Hassett, Father’s Surname: Hassett [no other information given]; and
Ref. No 2703 baptised 4.12.1859, birth 29.09.1859, Abode Wagga Wagga, child: Ellen Hassett?, Father George Hassett?, Mother Ellen Cafferty, Sponsers James Holloway and Sarah Clarke.
From NSW BD&Ms I think I have found the James Hassett above father to be a Dennis Hassett and his mother to be a Mary

I have found a new ancestor in my Hassett family, Honor Hassett, F, baptized 9 Oct 1837, Clonmellon Parish, (Brownstown), County Westmeath, Ireland, parents John & Catha. Batersby Hassad, sponsors Thom. Gorwney & Airn Glennen. The family emigrated 1849 and there is no death information on this child in the registers which go thru 1850 for deaths. There is a Hassett death in Nov 1849, not completely readable, but we believe it says Hugh, not Honor.

Any DNA testing? What is the year of birth of Thomas Hassett? There was a Hassett I noticed in ancestry.com census records who moved to Chicago area I questioned whether they were related to my John Hassett b.c.1806. John married in County Westmeath but I don't think that was his county of birth and upbringing.

Henry Jerome Hassett and Margaret Pennycook

Henry Jerome Hassett born 1871 Benares, India died 1960 Vancouver, BC and Margaret Pennycook born about 1886 Scotland died 1921 Toronto, Ontario. Margaret also went by the name Elizabeth. This couple had two children:

Joseph Allen Cook born about 1913 York, Ontario (Margaret's illegitimate son by another man before she met Henry). This son went by the name of Allen Hassett as per his 1919-1921 school attendance records and the 1921 Canada census. The Canada census is the last mention of him.

Kathleen Patricia Hassett born about 1919 or 1920 York Ontario (Henry and Margaret's daughter). The Canada census is the last mention of her.

Any leads on what happened to these two children would be much appreciated.

Anne

Thank you for your message. These names do not connect with the Hassetts in my tree. I have no Daly's or Cunningham's. I have a Johanna Burns who married a Patrick Hassett in about 1825 in the Parish of Doora - we think in Knockanean or Drumdoolaghty. They had four children Patrick, Andrew (who went to New York, Mary (who went to Wisconsin) and Michael (who family legend says went to Australia but I have yet to prove this one!). In my files I have two deaths certs from the Hassett family in Quinn. My email address is jillianvanturnhout@gmail.com and if you email me I can send them to you. I can also send you details of my tree if you wish but I don't see the apparent links. No doubt if we go far enough back they will be there!

My Hassetts left Ireland in 1849. My John Hassett was b.c.1806 and we believe married in County Westmeath in 1835. The name may have been or may have been transcribed as Hassan or Hassen. Someone has suggested that John Hassett may have been born in County Limerick but again, other than some's suggestion, there is no substantial proof. There are too many John Hassetts to blindly assume one is my John Hassett. Thanks for the info though. I will keep it in mind.

Re: Gerard & Michael Hassett - From Limerick to USA

Hello Simon,

I’m not related but based upon information provided by you, and a kind respondent named shanew147, I found what I believe to be information pertaining to your Hassett and related ancestors. You may already have some of this information, but some of it you may not.

For example, below is a civil parish (CP) marriage index for Christopher Hassett and Mary Nunan. The index shows the couple were married in Limerick City in 1897. This index comes from the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Limerick. The IFHF is also known as RootsIreland:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Christopher 1897 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Christopher
Spouse's Surname: Nunan
Spouse's First Name: Mary
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1897

Parish/District: Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)
____

Civil marriages traditionally included the names of the fathers of the groom and the bride, but unfortunately not the names of the mothers. Civil marriage indexes at the IFHF website do not automatically include the names of the fathers. You either have to know their names, or you have to find out what their names are through further research, or you can go ahead and order a transcription of the marriage from the IFHF to find out what the names of the fathers were. The other option is to submit first names to the IFHF search engine, to see which names are accepted by the search engine as the first names of the fathers. I chose this last option beginning with Christopher, and after several tries the search engine accepted Thomas as Christopher’s father. The revised marriage index is below:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Christopher 1897 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Christopher
Spouse's Surname: Nunan
Spouse's First Name: Mary
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1897

Parish/District: Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)
____

With Mary Nunan as the primary partner in the marriage index, I submitted first names to the search engine to see which one would be accepted as her father. The search engine accepted Michael. This index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Nunan Mary 1897 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Nunan
First Name: Mary
Spouse's Surname: Hassett
Spouse's First Name: Christopher
Father's Surname: Nunan
Father's First Name: Michael
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1897

Parish/District: Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)
____

From the above information we now know that Christoper Hasset’s father was Thomas Hassett, while Mary Nunan’s father was Michael Nunan.

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for Christopher Hassett and Mary Nunan for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the record from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcription. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=78

One advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the record is sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait very long to view it.

The marriage transcription for Christopher and Mary should provide additional information about the couple, such as where they were living before they married, Christopher’s occupation at the time of the marriage, as well as the occupations of Christopher and Mary’s fathers. The 1901 and 1911 census enumerations show that Christopher was a gas fitter. The marriage record may also record that he was a gas fitter. The marriage transcription may also include the name or names of witnesses to the marriage, as well as the name of the clergyman who performed the marriage ceremony. The name of the church where the couple were married may also be recorded in the transcription.

To view a sample civil marriage transcription from the IFHF, go to the following link: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=samplerecords#cvmarr...

Next I wanted to see if I could find the civil birth indexes as well as the church baptism indexes for the children of Christopher Hassett and Mary Nunan. According to your information and information from the 1901 and 1911 census returns, the Hassett children were Thomas, Patrick, Gerard, and Michael. I found the civil birth indexes for all four children, as well as the baptism indexes for two of the four children at the IFHF website for County Limerick.

The first index below is a civil birth index for Christopher T. Hassett. As you will see a little later in his baptism index, his full name was Christopher Thomas Hassett, though it appears he went by Thomas Hassett in both the 1901 and 1911 census enumeration. The index shows his birth was recorded in Limerick City in 1897:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Christopher T 1897 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 4 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. His baptism took place in St Michael’s Catholic Church, Limerick City:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Christopher Thomas 1897 Parish: ST. He was born in 1900 and also baptized in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Limerick City:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Patrick Joseph 1900 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. MICHAEL'S (RC)
____

The following are the civil birth indexes for Gerard Hassett (1902); and “Micahel” Hassett (1905). The index for Gerard shows that his father’s middle name is John.

To access the 1905 birth index spell the child’s name Micahel, rather than Michael, or else you won’t be able to access the index or the transcription of the birth. The other option is to access the 1905 index and the transcription by leaving out the child’s first name and middle initial.

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Gerard 1902 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. The index however, doesn’t give the names of his parents:

Michael Alphonsus Hassett, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958

Name:	Michael Alphonsus Hassett
Event Type: Birth
Event Date: Jan - Mar 1905
Event Place: Limerick, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year: Jan - Mar 1905
Registration District:	Limerick
Age:
Birth Year (Estimated):
Mother's Maiden Name:
Volume Number: 5
Page Number:	325
GS Film number: 101070
Digital Folder Number: 004193984
Image Number: 00344

Citing this Record:
"Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBL9-R2K : accessed 06 Apr 2014), BIRTHS entry for Michael Alphonsus Hassett; citing Limerick, Jan - Mar 1905, vol. 5, p. 325, General Registry, Custom House, Dublin; FHL microfilm 101070.
____

The next search involved looking for the birth and baptism indexes for Christopher Hassett, whose full name was Christopher John Hassett, according to his son Gerard’s 1902 civil birth index. Christopher and Mary Nunan were married in 1897, and so I figured that they were both born sometime in the 1870s, though I’m not sure they were born in County Limerick. The marriage index notes that Christopher’s father was Thomas Hassett.

I found a birth index for a Christopher John Hassett at the Ancestry.com website, which shows he was born in the Parish of St. Michaels, Limerick City, on 28 December 1873. The index shows that his parents were Thomas Hassett and Bridget Burke. The index follows:

Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911

Name:	Christopher John Hassett
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 28 Dec 1873
Birth Place: No IV St Michaels, City Limerick, Ireland

Baptism Place: No IV St Michaels, City Limerick, Ireland

Father's Name: Thomas Hassett
Mother's name: Bridget Burke

FHL Film Number: 255892

Source Information:
Ancestry.com. They were married in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Limerick City, in 1867:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Thomas 1867 Parish: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)
____

I also found the civil marriage index for Thomas and Bridget. The index shows that Thomas’s father was also named Thomas Hassett:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Thomas 1867 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. The indexes show that three of these children were either born or baptized in the year 1871. The 1871 birth indexes are for Anne and Elizabeth, while the 1871 baptism index is for Bridget. You would have to order their individual transcriptions to see the chronology of the births/baptism in the year 1871, as I’m not sure they were triplets. You’ll also notice there are birth and baptism indexes for a Mary Hassett for the year 1868, and two baptism indexes for a Mary Hassett dated 1872. This indicates that the Mary Hassett born in 1868 had died, though I’m not sure why there are two baptism indexes for Mary in 1872.

In addition, you’ll see in the civil birth indexes that the maiden name of the children’s mother Mary is spelled Burke, while in the baptism indexes her name is spelled Bourke. This is likely how they appear in the original records.

The indexes follow. I’ve included once again the 1873 civil birth index for Christopher John Hassett so that you can view the full chronology of the Hassett births and baptisms:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Mary 1868 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 4 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. The 1867 year of marriage is an indication that Thomas and Bridget were born in the 1840s. I didn’t find a Catholic baptism index for a Thomas Hassett, son of Thomas Hassett for any time in the 1840s, though I did uncover the an index for a Thomas Hassett, son of Thomas Hassett, who was baptized in St. Michael’s Church of Ireland in 1844. The IFHF search engine accepted Elizabeth as the first name of Michael’s mother.

The index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Thomas 1844 Parish: ST. MICHAEL'S (CI)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Thomas
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Elizabeth

Year: 1844

Parish/District: ST. MICHAEL'S (CI)
____

I don’t know if the above baptism for Thomas Hassett would be the Thomas Hassett in your line, though it is possible that, while Thomas was raised in the Church of Ireland, he later converted to Catholicism in order to marry Bridget Burke.

Also concerning the baptism index for Thomas above, the transcription will probably not include Elizabeth’s maiden name, as it was not traditional to record the mother’s maiden name in Church of Ireland/Church of England baptisms.

As noted above I didn’t find the Catholic baptism of a Thomas Hassett recorded in the 1840s, but did find the Catholic baptism of a Thomas Hassett for the year 1851. The IFHF search engine accepted Thomas as his father and Bridget as his mother. Thomas was baptized in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Limerick City:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Thomas 1851 Parish: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Thomas
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Bridget

Year: 1851

Parish/District: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)
____

You will have to order a transcription of the baptism for Thomas Hassett learn what the maiden name of his mother Bridget was. Again, I’m not sure if the Thomas Hassett in the above index is in your Hassett line, though there is the possibility that he may be.

Next I looked for the baptism of Bridget Burke/Bourke, daughter of James. I didn’t uncover a baptism index for a Bridget Burke/Bourke in any Limerick City Catholic or Church of Ireland parish church in the 1840s. It’s possible she was not born in Limerick City, or may have been born nearby the city. There won’t be civil birth records for Thomas or Bridget as the government in Ireland did not commence with the recording of civil births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations until the year 1864. The exception to this was the government began to record Protestant marriages in 1845.

There’s always the possibility that I missed locating the baptism of Bridget Burke/Bourke.

Simon, before spending money purchasing transcriptions of birth, baptism, and marriage records, I recommend that you access the same indexes from the IFHF website that I did, to see if you agree these records pertain to the ancestors and collateral lines you are looking for. You will be more familiar with your genealogy than I, as I haven’t been researching the Hassett line, nor am I a descendant of the Hassetts of County Limerick.

CHRISTOPHER HASSETT OF THE UK

I uncovered the marriage index for a Christopher P. Hassett and a Catherine C. Galvin at Ancestry.com. The index shows the marriage was recorded in the Hendon (Middlesex) Registration District for the March quarter of 1972. The index is below:

Marriage March Quarter 1972

Christopher P Hassett

Catherine C Galvin

Registration District: Hendon

Volume: 5c

Page: 527

Source Information:

Ancestry.com. The marriage can be found in Volume 5c, Page 527 of the GRO registers. The GRO website can be found at: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I then looked for the birth indexes for any children of Christopher and Catherine, but found none. I’m not sure who the Christopher P. Hassett in the above marriage index is. Was he the son of Christopher Thomas Hassett who was born in Limerick City in 1897, or was he the Christopher Hassett who was born in 1897, but whose middle initial in the marriage index above was incorrectly recorded as P, rather than T?

I’m also not sure if the index below pertains to your Christopher Hassett. This index shows the death of a Christopher Thomas Hasssett was recorded in the Kensington, London Registration District in the September quarter of 1975. Christopher’s age at death is 77, with an inferred birth year of 1898. This index was found at Ancestry.com.

The death cert can be found in Volume 13, Page 1518 of the GRO registers:

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007

Name:	Christopher Thomas Hassett
Birth Date: 1898
Date of Registration:	Sep 1975
Age at Death:	77
Registration district: Kensington
Inferred County: London
Volume: 13
Page: 1518

Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007.
____

I didn’t have enough information to see if there is a death index for a Catherine Galvin Hassett or to see if Catherine is still alive.

GERARD HASSETT IN THE US

I found a naturalization document called a “Declaration of Intention,” filed by Gerard Hassett, declaring his intention to become a citizen of the United States. This document, which also includes a photograph of Gerard, was uncovered at Ancestry.com. I’ve attached a copy of the Declaration of Intention, which also includes information noting that Gerard was born in Limerick City, Ireland, on October 19, 1902; that his occupation was carpenter; that he was aged 30 at the time he filed the Declaration of Intention. The address in the United States Gerard cited appears to be 657 or 637 Cauldwell Ave., but this address is crossed through. Gerard also wrote that he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 170 pounds, had blonde hair and blue eyes, and was married to Kathleen (no maiden name listed) on September 5, 1931 in New York, NY. He further states Kathleen was born in Limerick City on July 26, 1902 and that she entered the U.S. at New York on June 2, 1929. He also states that he and Kathleen have no children.

Toward the bottom of the document Gerard wrote that he emigrated to the U.S. from Cobh, Ireland on board the ship Republic, on what appears to be April 28 or 29, 1928. He signed and dated the Declaration of Intention on 6 April 1933.

Based on this information I also found Gerard’s ship’s passenger list record at Ancestry.com which shows he arrived in New York on board the Republic on April 29, 1928. I’ve also attached the passenger list to this reply.

I next found the marriage index at Ancestry.com for Kathleen O’Neill and Gerard Hassett. They were married in the Bronx, New York, on 5 September 1931:

New York, New York, Marriage Indexes 1866-1937

Name:	Kathleen O'Neill
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 5 Sep 1931
Marriage Place: Bronx, New York, USA
Spouse: Gerard Hassett
Certificate Number: 6501

Source Information:

Ancestry.com. If you are going to do an extensive amount of research on your Hassett and related ancestors, you may want to consider one of the subscription options offered by Ancestry.com. Or, if you don’t want to tie into an Ancestry.com subscription, you can phone or visit your local library, as many libraries today have subscriptions to Ancestry.com which are free for patrons to use.

Also the FamilySearch/Ladder Day Saints (LDS) website has free access to immigration and naturalization indexes, many of which are tied to fee-based genealogy companies such as Fold3. The LDS website can be found at: https://familysearch.org/

KATHLEEN O’NEILL HASSETT IN THE US

I located the following information about Kathleen O’Neill at Ancestry.com. This was submitted to Ancestry.com by Danielle Connolly, showing that Kathleen’s mother was Charlotte O’Neill:

Kathleen O'Neill
Birth 26 Jul 1902 in Limerick, Ireland
Death Aug 1990 in Yonkers, Westchester, New York, USA

Family Members
•	Parents & Siblings
o	No Father
o	Charlotte O'Neill
1878 – 1948
•	Spouse & Children
o	Gerard Hassett
1902 – 1994
____

Based on the information about Kathleen O’Neill provided by Danielle Connolly, I uncovered a civil birth index for a Catherine O’Neill for the year 1902, showing her birth was recorded in Limerick City. The IFHF search engine accepted Charlotte as the first name of her mother, and Thomas as the first name of her father. This may pertain to your Kathleen O’Neill’s birth, though I can’t be 100 percent sure that this Catherine O’Neill is the Kathleen O’Neill Hassett in your direct ancestral line:

1 match for the search criteria: O'Neill Catherine 1902 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. To do this I looked for the marriage of a Thomas O’Neill and a Charlotte for the time period 1890 to 1902. I found one index at Ancestry.com showing that the marriages of four couples was recorded in Limerick for the march quarter of 1895. Two of the people listed in the index are Thomas O’Neill and Charlotte Robertson. But, the index doesn’t tell which two people married one another:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958

Name:	Charlotte Robertson
Date of Registration:	Jan-Feb-Mar 1895
Registration district:	Limerick
Volume: 5
Page Number:	327
FHL Film Number:	101257

Records on Page: Names

James Gould
Charlotte Robertson
Bridget Mullane
Mary Somers
Michael Hartigan
Bridget Madigan
Patrick Foley
Thomas O'Neill
Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Belfast, Ireland.
____

I went back to the IFHF website to see if the marriage of a Thomas O’Neill and a Charlotte Robertson was recorded in Limerick City in 1895. I found the civil marriage index for the marriage. The IFHF search engine accepted James as the first name of Thomas’s father:

1 match for the search criteria: O'Neill Thomas 1895 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. The names of these children and their years of birth are John (1895); Mary (1897); Elizabeth (1898); and William (1900). I also found the baptism index for William, showing he was baptized in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Limerick City. The index also shows his middle name was Michael. I’ve also included the birth index for Catherine below so that you can see the full chronology of the births of the O’Neill children:

1 match for the search criteria: O'Neill John James 1895 Parish: LIMERICK NO. 4 (CP)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. You will need to obtain a record filed in the States that gives the names of her parents. Her parents’ names may have been recorded in Kathleen’s death record.

Information you saw earlier submitted by Danielle Connolly had shown to Kathleen O’Neill Hassett had died in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York, in August of 1990. What you can do at this point is to order Kathleen’s death certificate, to see if her parents are listed on the death certificate. For information about ordering death certs filed in Yonkers, New York, go to the following link:
http://www.cityofyonkers.com/play/departments-a-f/city-clerk...

Yonkers death record application forms can be downloaded from the following link:
http://www.cityofyonkers.com/home/showdocument?id=13

Best of Luck with your research Simon,

Dave Boylan

Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Christopher T
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Christopher
Mother's Surname: Nunan
Mother's First Name: Mary

Year: 1897

Parish/District: LIMERICK NO. 4 (CP)
____

Next is the church baptism index for Christopher Thomas Hassett. His baptism took place in St Michael’s Catholic Church, Limerick City:

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Christopher Thomas 1897 Parish: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Christopher Thomas
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Christopher
Mother's Surname: Nunan
Mother's First Name: Mary

Year: 1897

Parish/District: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)
____

Below are the civil birth and church baptism indexes for Patrick Joseph Hassett.

Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Patrick Joseph
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Christopher
Mother's Surname: Nunan
Mother's First Name: Mary

Year: 1900

Parish/District: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)

AND

1 match for the search criteria: Hassett Patrick Joseph 1900 Parish: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Limerick
Surname: Hassett
First Name: Patrick Joseph
Father's Surname: Hassett
Father's First Name: Christopher
Mother's Surname: Nunan
Mother's First Name: Mary

Year: 1900

Parish/District: ST. MICHAEL'S (RC)

As noted above I didn’t find the baptism of a Thomas Hassett recorded in the 1840s, but did find the baptism of a child by that name for the year 1851.

GERARD HASSETT

KATHLEEN O’NEILL HASSETT

Limerick
Surname: O'Neill
First Name: Catherine
Father's Surname: O’Neill
Father's First Name: Thomas
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name: Charlotte

Year: 1902

Parish/District: LIMERICK NO. 3 (CP)
____

Next I looked for Charlotte’s maiden name. To do this I looked for the marriage of a Thomas O’Neill and a Charlotte for the time period 1890 to 1902. I found one index at Ancestry.com showing that the marriages of four couples was recorded in Limerick for the march quarter of 1895. Two of the people listed in the index are Thomas O’Neill and Charlotte Robertson. But, the index doesn’t tell which two people married one another:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958

Name:	Charlotte Robertson
Date of Registration:	Jan-Feb-Mar 1895
Registration district:	Limerick
Volume: 5
Page Number:	327
FHL Film Number:	101257

Records on Page: Names

James Gould
Charlotte Robertson
Bridget Mullane
Mary Somers
Michael Hartigan
Bridget Madigan
Patrick Foley
Thomas O'Neill
Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011.

Original data:
“Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845–1958,” Index. FamilySearch, Salt Lake City, Utah. General Register Office. "Quarterly Returns of Births in Ireland with Index to Births." Belfast, Ireland.

For information about ordering death certs filed in Yonkers, New York, go to the following link: http://www.cityofyonkers.com/Index.aspx?page=51

Yonkers death record application forms can be downloaded from the following link:
file:///C:/Users/Owner/Downloads/deathcert%20(2).pdf

Best of Luck with your research Simon,

Dave Boylan
I'm correcting information- my great grandfather Wardell Hassett was married to Julia Maxfield they did have 3 children Lawrence, Wardell R. and Howard Edward. My great grandfather Wardell was killed in the Split Rock Explosion in July 1918. My great grandmother remarried a man named Fred T.Conklin, they supposedly had a daughter named Julia. Howard Edward is my grandfather he married Anna Marie Minehan my grandmother and they had my father Edward Joseph Hassett. My grandfather and father where born in Syracuse, New York. My father was raised in Binghamton, New York where my grandmother was born. Anyone with information on them would be appreciated.

My Hassett family, father John b.1806 mother Catharine Batterby b.c.1800 emigrated from Dublin and arrived in 1849, settled Genesee Co, NY (Upstate NY - LeRoy, later Bergen), had 4 children, my gg-grandmother Mary Hassett the only one to marry. Ellen & John Jr. did not marry & baby Catherine died on ship during crossing. There was/is another Hassett family on the same ship (name spelled Hassit or Hasset on immigration records, Castle Garden), another family settled at Stafford, Genesee Co, NY, and there are Hassetts presently in Buffalo, NY. Also, a Hugh Hassett, 13ish, arrived a year later and lived with them briefly before going to live with the Stafford family and settling there. I am trying to find any brothers (or sisters I suppose) of John Hassett b.1806. I'm hoping to find out what area in Ireland they emigrated from, any other family details. I do have a pic of my gg-grandmother Mary.

Simon, I too have hit a brick wall with my Hassett ancestors and there are significant difference between your information and mine. But on a long shot, I'm wondering if you have DNA tested and if we could compare information. My ggg-parents Hassett & family immigrated to US in 1849, settling in Upstate NY. There is a significant population of Hassetts here Upstate but there hasn't been much discussion or interest in matches amongst my family and other Hassett families, for whatever reason. My DNA does match several O'Neils, one being 3rd-5th cousins, the other a more remote 5th-distant cousins. There is an outside chance we could have mutual ancestors in Ireland. I haven't found any information at all about my Hassett origins, no county of origin, and researchers have said they are unable to find any mention of marriage of my John Hassett b.c.1806 Ireland m. Catharine Batterby b.c.1800 Ireland.

DNA Testing

WHO has been DNA tested? There is a price war, the cost now $100 or less. Especially as we aren't sure who are brothers, cousins, etc., DNA testing may be helpful. I was tested by Family Tree DNA (though you can test from one company now and upload results to other companies, or GEDmatch takes all results). I presently have NO Hassett matches, though I have over 10 matches to Moore, my gg-grandmother Mary Hassett Moore.

Catharine Batterby Hassett is my most distant known direct-line female ancestor (mtDNA). My haplogroup via her is K1c2.

The men many be able to use Y-DNA to connect brothers & cousins.

HASSETT. In Richville, [aka Pembroke, Genesee Co, NY] on the 7th [Aug 17,1867] inst, of
Dropsy on the heart, Mary, wife of Patrick
Hassett, aged 44 years 8 months. .
The decease of this estimable woman has
cast a gloom over her large circle of friends
and acquaintances, for the many kind and
Christian acts she has bestowed daring, her
years of health and activity. Always ready at
the call of the poor and needy, she was ever
willing to assist them in the hour of affliction,
until stricken herself with a lingering disease,
she yielded up her spirit to the God who gave
it, and died in the.happy hope of a glorious
hereafter.

http://fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2010/Batavia%20NY%20Spiri...

[Not related to me]

Bro. Lucius
Parks, and at the next meeting (February 24, 1847) Patrick Hassett was
the first candidate initiated.

Unknown whether related- my John/Catharine Hassett immigrated 1849 & settled Le Roy, Genesee Co, NY. I am questioning whether John may be a brother or relative of Patrick & settled in same area because of it.
I have a ggg-grandfather John Hassett b. Ireland c.1806 m. Catharine Batterby emigrated to US 1849 from Dublin. Seems like every Hassett family had a John Hassett but I'd like to find his county/parish of origin. I'm told this family had no Blennerhasset connection. There were other Hasset on same ship (Huma) who were not immediate family members. I have a picture of gg-grandmother Mary Hassett b.1842 my sister gave me.

I'm looking for info on Samuel (Birth Year ~1810) and Emeline Downes (1823) Hassett who lived in Queen Annes County, Maryland and had 5 children: Thomas H. (1844); George M. (1848); Mary Ann (~1850) who married George Cole; Susan (~1850) who married James Edgar Comegys; and Vachel (1854).

I am able to follow the family on the 1850 and 1860 Maryland census but the 1870 census shows the children scattered in different homes in the county and no mention of Samuel and Emeline.

Any thoughts or connections? Thanks.

Re: James HASSETT wife Mary MACDONALD - Buffalo NY - ca1850

My husband, Thomas Hassett, may be a relative of one of the Buffalo Hassett families.
Daniel Hassett and Bridget Culliney were the parents of James Hassett b.Feb,1864 County Clare Ireland. I have never found Daniel. They had 3 children, James, Patrick and a daughter. In June 1864, Bridget marries Patt Ryan and they have 7 children. Don't know when James left Ireland but family lore places it about 1880 and that he went to live with an Aunt in Buffalo,NY. Also that he met on the boat his future wife, Nora Crotty. Nora's mother and 7 of Nora's siblings arrive in the US in 1883. Nora, her father and 1 or 2 more siblings apparently enugrated earlier. Nora Crotty and James Hassett were married in Cincinnati Ohio in 1888, James is found in Cincinnati records in 1886 and 1887. He is living with his brother Patrick in 1888. Family lore states that Patrick did not like the US, only stayed a few years and returned to Ireland and became rich. The newly weds in Cincinnati did not maintain a relationship with the Crotty and Hassett families and contact with the was seldom. James Hassett established a successful grocery store business in Cincinnati. Daniel Ryan, b 1877 in Ireland is the youngest son of Bridget Culliney's s 2nd marriage. He emigrates from Ireland about 1900 and is found living with his step-brother James Hassett in Cincinnati. He died in Cincinnati in 1956 and never had any children. Much of the above history flowed from the discovery of Dan Ryan's entrance at Ellis Island, NY. It stated that he was from Barefield, County Clare. Until that bit of info I only knew that the Hassett family was from Ireland. Also in connecting with 3rd cousins in the Crotty line they have provided info of some Crotty marrying Hassett and Ryan spouses and all of that was not connected to our line of Hassett listed above. Those Hassett families were from Kilkee, ( Kilkee being a new parish some of their older family info was in Kilrush. Barefield info I think might also be found in an adjoining county.

Afternoon... Never considered DNA testing but might be worth a thought... My Hassett line originates from Limerick with my Great Uncles immigrating in the US in the mid 1930's whilst their other siblings (one of which my grandfather) headed to the UK. I'm currently waiting for a few documents & once in receipt of them I should be able to confirm some details which in turn will open up some generations and the ability to have the researches confirm information. There's a few 'private' trees on here listing a Michael & Gerard but as of yet nothing has been received from their owners. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hello, I am working on Hassett/Daly/Cunningham. I am trying to find out about my great-grandparents: Jane Elizabeth Hassett and John Cunningham Daly. I know my great-grandmother had a connection to a property on Green Road, Moyreisk, Quin, Ennis, Clare because sometime before 1965, her daughter (my great-aunt Margaret Daly) received a letter from a solicitor (James B MacClancy LLB Solicitor-Dublin Office, 3 Merrion Street, Harrmony Row, Ennis, County Clare) regarding a court proceeding involving the title to a property there. There is a headstone at the Franciscan Abbey in Quin: “In loving memory of, Patrick Hassett, Green Rd., Moyriesk, his wife, Mary (nee Lynch, their sons, Rev. Patrick L., Rev, James, Tom, and Michael, their daughters, Sr. M. Rosaria, Mary A, Bedella and Louise.” So I think all these people are related somehow. My mother said we had McNamara, Kelly and Sullivan in the family, too. I believe my great-great grandfather, John Hassett was married to someone with the surname Burns. Does any of this tie in to your research?

One of their children, James Madison Hassett and I believe the brother, Patrick, also moved to Corry, Pennsylvania in the late 1800's. I don't know exactly when, but James with his wife, Nellie Ellen (DOD 10-1941) owned and operated a slaughter house and meat market. He passed away sometime around 1927 or so, They had two surviving children at that time, Maude Hassett Hagaman and Clyde Cecil Hassett. Clyde was my paternal grandfather. He ran the meat market in Corry until 1929, at which time the remaining members of the Corry, PA Hassetts moved to Waynesboro, Virginia where they purchased a slaughter house and meat market from Harry Elwood Hall, who happens to be my maternal grandfather. Clyde and his wife, Beatrice Smith Hassett had six children, Maude Hassett McClellan (birth year 1903l-1975+-) Clarice Hassett Hatcher, James Hassett, my father: Harold G. "Bill" Hassett (12-23-1909 to May 2, 1991), Norma Hassett Steele (1919-1988) and Marjorie Elaine Hassett (1927-2003+-) James and Nellie are buried in the Curtis Davis Cemetery in Warren Co, PA, the rest are buried in Augusta Memorial Park, Fishersville, VA or Riverview Cemetery, Waynesboro, VA. I have posted some photos on findagrave.com All children of Beatrice and Clyde C. Hassett had children of their own who are surviving still scattered around Virginia, some in Richmond area, some in Waynesboro VA area. I hope this helps you. Please let me know you got this message OK. What is your relationship to this family?

They may have separated. But do know that Theresa raised their children Bronx, NY.
