His obituary reads: Hartmann- Friedrich Hartmann, our brother, born February 25, 1826 in the village of Durrn in Baden, died June 4, 1913 in Topeka, Kansas. Having come to America in 1854, he married Elisabeth Schmidt in Dayton, Ohio. The Lord gave them 3 sons and 4 daughters. As a patriot, he served from 1861 to 1864 in the war. In 1866, he became a believer and through baptism became a member of the Dayton Congregation. Later, the family moved away to Topeka, where they lived for a long time and were numbered among the first members of the congregation. Recently, the father returned from California to spend his last days with his children. But, his stay was only brief since he arrived home sick, and it was soon obvious that he could not recover. At the beautiful age of 87 and with longing for home abroad, he entered in faith and peace into the rest of the Lord. Psalm 116:5 served as the Word of comfort at the grieving sevice.
They had seven children: Jacob, Bertha, Lena, Frederick, Margaret “Maggie”, William our ancestor, & Carrie. Some of the family later changed the name to Hartman.
