I was reading, once again, the story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Upon arrival there Jacob, his children, and his grandchildren numbered 70. 400 years later when they left his descendants numbered one million fighting men! Thus, with children and women they must have numbered at least two million. That seemed like a lot, so I decided to do a quick survey of Georg Harter's family multiplication. Georg arrived Philadelphia in 1749 and by 1770 he and Eva (Bracker) had 11 children, six boys and five girls. No information on Elizabeth after her confirmation has been found, so she is assumed to have died without marriage. Dorothea tragically died one month after her marriage. The rest married and had children. By the time of Georg and Eva's death, about 1880, they had 54 known grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Nine children were still living, so his total family numbered 68 – almost the same number as Jacob's family. One hundred years later, in 1900, over 400 descendants are known to have carried the Harter surname, with perhaps the number being closer to 500 when considering the number (about 180) who were born in the mid to late 1800s, but for whom I have no death date. This does not even consider those descendants of Harter daughters who carry different surnames! Thus, in one hundred years Georg and Eva Harter's descendants increased from 68 to something between 500 and 1000!!! Suddenly, the increase to over one million in 400 years does not seem at all impossible.
