My question is that the dates don't fit this Rachel Pitcher to be parent of Insley or Sally. See below for proof

I was interested in Joseph and looked on ancestry.com. There is a public tree that has been done and is available for viewing. One of the responses said that the "Harbours in America" book was on interlibrary loan and could be available at a Mormon center. I live in Central Ohio and we have such a center. Good to check in too. Joseph's wife was Mary Polly Stephens and were married in 1799 according to info on ancestry.com.

I see that many family trees here have listed Pittsylvania or Pittsylvania County, Virginia, as place of birth for Joseph Harbour (1773-1839). I'm just curious as to where that data comes from. The two most accessible references I've been able to find simply say "probably in Virginia" or "probably in Pennsylvania". I've only seen something as specific as Pittsylvania in these trees here...so I'm interested in where that data point comes from.

The two books below have been my primary resources. If there are other good ones available, I'd greatly a appreciate a point in the right direction.

This book generally includes references to all the types of data you mention (as proofs), as well as where one might go to obtain a copy of a particular record. It does not typically contain actual copies of the records themselves.

Something like 36 libraries have a copy. The link below lists them. Most are reference copies only (can view it onsite but can't check it out). The Family History Library of Salt Lake City, UT will do an interlibrary loan to an affiliated family history center (usually a Mormon church) in your area.

It should take you to a listing of libraries that have copies of the book, including one that says it's available as an ebook. Might be a place to start, as I couldn't find any copies for sale.

Thanks Jeremy for getting back. I have the info on when she died but what I am looking is the site where she is buried in. I know her sons Wiley and Elijah lived just outside of Tuscalossa in Duncanville. Also Rebecca Grandaughter X 5,Anna Louise Albright (Wiley's Grandaughter X 4) married her 5th cousin Robert Bartow Skelton Jr. who is also the Grandson X 5 of Rebecca and the Grandson X 4 of Richmond Skelton who is Wiley's brother.

Do you have the book "The Harbours in America" by Louis Williams? It has much information on Thomas Harbour and all the Harbours who followed. His son Elisha and wife Margaret have 5 children listed but the commentary says that though Elisha, Elisha Jr. and Joseph all received land grants in Christian County, Kentucky between 1799-1813, the researcher is not sure these "candidate" children were Elisha and Margaret's offspring. Can you shed any light on this? From the book are Jeremiah, Amos, Elisha Jr., Micajah and Joseph Elisha's children or children of Talmon and Mary Wright Harbour. A little bit of a mystery! Please let me know what info you have. Thanks.

Thanks for answering my message. I come from the John Skelton-Mary Rebecca Harbour line. Mary Rebecca's father was Esaias Harbour. I found the family burial plot in Franklin County Ga. I have some photos of his marker and also a few other family members. As far as I can tell Esaias' Grandfather (Thomas Harbour 1691-1768) was from Wales and his GreatGreatGrandfather (Abner Harbour 1649-1700) was from Penbrooke Wales. My Grandfather X 8 (William Skelton 1650-1700) was from Featherstone Yorkshire England. He married a woman name Isabelle. I believe her last name was Sanar.

If anyone is interested I found the Harbour Cemetery just outside of Carnesville Ga. It has several unmarked graves but there are 3 markers. One is listed as Mary B. Harbour, wife of E.J Harbour, another is listed as Mildred Harbour, daughter of E.J. Harbour but the main one is the grave of Esaias Harbour (1747-1833). It said he fought for a Virginia Company in the Revolutionary War. I have it posted on my family tree.

I do not know if you had any other information. I know my Dad did not have any contact with his father and it was rumoured that his parents were not actually divorced and Esther's second marriage was bigamous.She was known as Esther Briggs when she died.approx 1972

Looking at your original query I noticed you gave Dad's Birthday as Jan 21st We always thought it was Feb 21st.1913.

Please let me know if any of this is of use. Were you looking this up for John? I remember that he was quite interested. He does carry on the Harbour name.

Many thanks for forwarding the information. I don't recognise any of the names or occupations, so I don't think there is a link unless it is way back in the mists of time! There do seem to be quite a few coincidences though. I wonder where your early Harbours came from? Mine were all along the east coast of Sussex and then Horsham and London.

Their children-Thomas, married, now dead ; dates and names not known. Phillip, married Elizabeth Richards ; they were the parents of the late Rev. Thomas Cleland, a prominent minister in the Presbyterian Church ; he resides in Kentucky, and is the father of two sons who are ministers -P. S. Cleland, of Topeka, Kan., and F. H. Cleland, of Lebanon, Ky. Thomas was also the father of Anna Wilson, mother of James Wilson, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Elisha and Catharine Harbour. Catharine Harbour was a sister of Ezekiel Arrowsmith.

Isaac Hall Harbour was struck and killed 20 December 1940 by an automobile in Jackson Mississippi. He was buried by the state in plot 70 section 55 of the Cedar Lawn cemetery in Jackson. He spent most of his life in Madison county Mississippi.

Harbour Hylton connection Confusion

Help! I am so confused. My gr..grandmother Sarah Harbor married Simeon Hylton in 1841. Abner Hylton married Elizabeth Hylton 1842. Now comes the puzzle, who were their parents. I come across many different versions on the internet. Some say Rachel Pitcher and George Harbour who married in 1783 but according to the census it would be impossible since Rachel would have been born in 1795. Here is what I find on the internet and census records.

Does anyone have any ideas? I think the family consisted of Sarah, Abner, and Eliza, some say that there was another daughter who took over the plantation of Thomas Harbor. I had a DNA test and the Hylton and Abner Harbor showed up in my related families so somewhere we are all related. Thank you Pat

There are special deals from ancestry.com. Last week they had a deal to pay $49 for six months. Sometimes it's free for two weeks. The book I'm referring to is titled "The Harbours in America" by Louis J. Williams. Unfortunately it is out of print but is available on ebay. Check around with the other relatives; someone may have this book. Many editions were sold. Anyway I've copied the pages pertaining to James Monroe and Martha Prudence Willingham Harbour; also found a page regarding the grandson named James Monroe. The elder James Monroe was married twice so for the grandson it will show the second wife Mrs. Mary Ann Yarberry Harbour. I would be willing to mail these pages to you. I did not expect an answer to this posting after all these years! Unfortunately, your Harbours don't mean anything to me but I have asked my cousin, Rosemary Harbour. She replied that there were several Harbour families in Hounslow - Pat Harbour was in her class at primary school but she was no relation. However, she will now ask her Mum and, if there is any more information, I will let you know.

I'm afraid that I do not know the marriage date for John Joseph Harbour, only that his son, Leonard Archer Harbour, was born on 21 Jan 1913.

By the way, I also now live in Surrey

Hello Alan,
I don't recognise any of the names, but it all seems a bit of a coincidence! My father's brother was Thomas Leonard Harbour, Known to all as Len. Joseph was a name that went down several generations of our family, coming from Rye to Hastings to Lewes, then to Horsham and ending in London. I wonder if there is a connection way back somewhere? I didn't know of any other Harbours in Hounslow when I lived there.
