Attached is a likeness of James Hanna, as was published in the Humboldt county newspaper, unknown date, where he (and I) resided. He is my 3rd great grandfather. This likeness was buried underneath one of 4 pillars of a court house which was built in Humboldt county where Hanna was one of the county's early DA's. One quirky story which was handed down to me was of a conversation which Hanna had with a fellow while walking one day:

"Hanna, my son has professed an interest in law as a trade. Tell me- shall he by necessity be compelled to find instruction in avarice, deceit, and wretchedness?" After not much more than a beat and with a wink, Hanna retorted,
"No, I rather think he shall inherit those qualities."
