Charla--
I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you. The name of Richard Hammon appeared only on the 1865 Illinois State Census, and we have not come across it again in our New Philadelphia research. I'm not entirely certain that the name is even Hammon--it could be Hamm. In any case, the family were indicated as being Euro-Americans.
Claire Martin
cmartin@museum.state.il.us

Re: Hammon family in New Philadelphia, Illinois

I am the author of a paper which documents the family of Jupiter Hammon, the first published African American poet published in the United States in 1760. We examined the Hammon family from its origins in Africa through 7 generations on Long Island, NY. We posted a query on Ancestry in 2011 but have never received any responses. In looking at Message Board queries to day I found yours, which dates to 2004.

I am responding to it, because it is the only one I have found referencing African American Hammons in a situation which may relate to descendants of Jupiter Hammon's relatives. In relation to the New Philadelphia research and archaeology you might want to read the paper which is entitled: The Migration of Jupiter Hammon and his Family: From Slavery to Freedom and it's Consequences, in the Long Island History Journal, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, 2013. Several of Jupiter Hammons near relatives migrated from Huntington Long Island, NY in the first 3 decades of the 19th century and we were unable to trace them further,;in addition there are at least 5 children which we could document from Boston Hammond, the brother of Benjamin, for whom we were unable to determine names. Boston and Benjamin were the grand nephews of Jupiter through Jupiter's brother Obediah. Jupiter was never married nor did he have any children as far as anyone has been able to determine. The family were slaves of Henry Lloyd, Joseph Lloyd, John Lloyd and John Lloyd , Jr. from the years approximately 1640-1795. They were all munumitted by the 1790's. The Lloyds who owned a large northern plantation on Lloyd Neck, just north of Huntington, in Nothwest Suffolk County, Long island. Until late in the 19th Century , Lloyd Neck was part of Queens County, New York.
There are also a number of female descendants: Nancy, Juda and Charity, Nancy and Juda are the daughters of Ruth Hammond Kit and her husband who is unrelated to the Hammons, Ruth is Jupiter Hammon's niece . Charity is the daughter of Benjamin Hammon. I am writing this from memory, because I am on bed rest, and can't get to my files. The paper, co- authored with Reginald Metcalf, now deceased, is available from the Long Island History Journal website, online. If you Google Jupiter Hammon, Long Island History Journal, or my name Charla Bolton, you should be able to find it.if you send me an email address I will send a link to you,

I have no idea if any of these people settled in New Philadelphia, but it seems possible. I hope this information leads to a new discovery of the whereabouts of Jupiter Hammon!s descendants .

There is more information I can give you about current scholarship , but this is already very long.

Outstanding, it appears that you are much like myself when it comes to tracking, our methods are similar. I descended from the Louis Joseph Mahoney & Margaret "Maggie" Hammond line, she was my second G-Grandmother. I will forward any confirmed info. regarding the Hammond line I find if you like.

Thanks again!

James H had four siblings... Martha, Levi, Sara and Isaac. I happened to locate Levi's death certificate (attached). You will see Hughie L Hammond as Father, Margaret "Nolan" as Mother. The "Nolan" is incorrect as I located Hugh and Margaret's marriage certificate as well (also attached) which clearly shows "Yokum". I have not located anything further for either. Now you know the rest of the story. Cheers.

When I entered James's name the only thing that I see is info from the 1880 census.....is it possible to go to the file directly if so can you give me a few pointers...I'll try not to bother you to much after that. :)

Susan (Richardson) Hammond died Tuesday, May 15, 1883. The following link will take you to transcripts from the Cecil Whig (Elkton, MD) obituaries:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/cecil/newspapers/whig1883b....

As for James H Hammond, I do not have his exact date of death, but I do have his final estate records dated October 16, 1888. Unfortunately his date of death is not noted on any of the 44 pages of his estate records. Additionally, I have not been successful locating either of their graves, even though I live in Cecil County, Maryland, and have visited each and every cemetery. I am still researching the family. I am attaching the cover page of James estate records... please note his last name was spelled Hammon, although there are a number of Hammond's listed in the records. The entire 44 page document is available for free on FamilySearch.org.

If you are interested, James father was Hugh L Hammond. His wife was Margaret Elizabeth Yocum. If you already have this information I will leave it at that.

I hope this helps.
Ellen Jane Hammon/ Hammond born 1863 died 1947.

I am trying to locate information on my great grandmother Ellen Jane Hammon/Hammond/Hamilton/Haman. The information I have has me frustrated and confused. In several documents I have found her maiden name to be Hammon, Hammond, Hamilton, and Haman. This is what I know: She was married twice. First marriage was to either John or William Broadbent. She had I believe 3 children to him: William, John C. and Ida or Ada. The only one I am sure of as far as birth is William. He was born Oct 24, 1880 and died Nov 20, 1951 in Blair County, Pennsylvania. Her son John lived somewhere in New York according to Williams obit. William's obit says his father's name was William. It does not give Ellen Jane's maiden name. I have nothing on Ida or Ada. According to Ellen Jane's obit it says her husband's name was John Broadbent. She later married Benjamin Franklin Rhine b:1863 d: 1937. They were married prior to 1890. Benjamin and Ellen had 5 children: Bertha b: 1890, Thomas b: 1897, Elsie b: 1900, Benjamin b: 1902, Virgie b: 1905. I also know that Ellen had 2 brother's. One was Bert and the other was Sam. Ellen died in Blair County, Pennsylvania. I am not sure where she was born. I know that she lived in the early 1900's in Mount Union, Pennsylvania. Any help in solving this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.

John Hammond/Hermon/Maine

I'm trying to track the line of John Hammond, born about 1774 died about 1863. According to other Ancestry trees he was married to Abigail Clark and had 6 children, most of whom lived in the Hermon and Levant areas of Penobscot County. He appears on the 1830 Hermon census as head of household. In 1840, he and his wife were perhaps living in Hermon with their son, Allen Hammond, who later moved to Ohio. Earlier census records in Somerset County (1820) and Kennebec County (1810) were perhaps this same John Hammond, based on the number and ages of the children. In the 1860 census for Hermon there is a John Hammon, age 86, a widower and a pauper, who is almost certainly the same John Hammond.

However, in the 1850 census, there is a couple, John and Mehitable Harmon, ages 70 and 68, both paupers, who are probably the same couple as on the earlier census records. This is the only record I have been able to find of John's wife's name. Does anyone know the basis for his reported marriage to Abigail Clark or should I assume that was a different John Hammond? There were a lot of them!

Jupiter Hammon Family

We are currently researching the family of Jupiter Hammon, the first published African American poet, in 1760. He was born in 1711, and died about 1806. He was born a slave of Henry LLoyd, on the Manor of Queens Village, LLoyd Neck, Town of Huntington, Long Island, New York. We have a large amount of information on his family. He never married and to our knowledge had no children, however, his brother Obadiah did, and it is through Obadiah that the known family members descend. The last family member that can be identified by us with certainty is Daniel Hammond who died in 1838 and is buried in the oldest Town cemetery, on Main Street and Nassau Road in Huntington, New York.

If you are African American with a last name of Hammon or Hammond, and believe your family descends from the Hammons on Long Island, please contact us. Both Hammon and Hammond were used by family members after manumission in the 1790s.

We have information which may be helpful to you, including the African origins of the family, and a detailed history of the family between 1650 and 1838. We are hoping that we may learn of additional family members and later history of the family.

Thank you, Charla Bolton and Reginald Metcalf

Rebecca Hammon who married George H. Jump in Oklahoma

I am searching for clues on a woman named Rebecca Hammon. I"m not sure if Hammon was her maiden name or the name of her 1st husband. She may have had a daughter with her 1st husband. I believe this same woman married George H. Jump in Tulsa County OK in 1930; however, they divorced in 1938. She died in Los Angeles County December 20, 1951. A newspaper death notice indicates her funeral was handled by Utter-McKinley at Compton. I understand that funeral home is no longer in existence. I do not know where she is buried. I would be interested in connecting with anyone who might be part of this family or who can offer assistance or clues.
