I am seeking information on my husband's family "The Hamiltons" from County Tyrone in Ireland. As there are many Hamiltons from Northern Ireland I will do my best to include as much as I know thus far.
It is believed that our "Hamilton's" originated intially from Scotland and went to Northern Ireland some time in the 17th Century, during the early 1600's at the time of the Planatations into Northern Ireland by the English. Whether they went directly to County Tyrone is unknown at present. Tracing the family tree back as far as one can go this is what has been discovered thus far.
The first mention of our Hamilton's is in the Griffith Valuations 1850's which lists a William Hamilton as residing at Meenakeeran,Townland/Termonmongan in County Tyrone, this is near Killeter; There is no mention of a Spouse's name. William had at least one son, Robert Hamilton DOB: approximently 1867/8 and he married Jane Johnston from Grousehall,Townland/Templecarn, County Donegal in 1891. Robert Hamilton's residence at the time of his marriage in 1891 was Meenakeeran, as his father before him in the 1850's.
There is no known details of sibling of Robert Hamilton, although it is beleived their are some brother's, one of which immigrated to Canada.
Jane Johnston's Parent's names are: FATHER - Alexander Johnston (Edenreagh,Townland/Termonmongan, County Tyrone)and his WIFE - Elizabeth Johnston,nee Wilson ( Archille,Townland/Ardstraw, County Tyrone.
Robert and Jane Hamilton had 4 children - 1/Alexander Hamilton DOB: 1892-Grousehall/Donegal.
2/Elizabeth Jane Hamilton DOB: 1893 - Tullanguiggy/Magheraculomoney/Fermanagh. 3/Matilda Hamilton DOB: 1895 - Tullanguiggy. 4/William Arthur Hamilton DOB: 1901 - Tullanguiggy.
Jane Hamilton died not long after the birth of her last child William Arthur in 1901. Robert Hamilton her husband remarried in 1902 to Ellen Porter from Tedd/Derryvullan/Fermanagh.
William Arthur Hamilton Immigrated to Australia as a young man about 16/17 years of age. In 1930 in Victoria he married Emma Juliet Yandell and they had 3 sons. Their first child, Neil William Hamilton is my husband's Father. Neil married Beryl Olive Day known as "Judy Day" from Cheltenham, Victoria; they had five children. There second child Stephen Neil Hamilton is my Husband.
The Hamilton's were Presbyterian and the Johnston's were Methodist's.
If you can help with any other details especially from the Irish side I would be most grateful. If there is anyone else in this family tree that you may have information on please contact me at the above email address or at
