Seeking information of the descendants of the marriage of
Gottlieb (1772-1836) and Regine Ann (Kiehsich)(1775-1855) Hamann, of Siefertsdorf bei Dippoldswalde, Koenigreich Sachsen (Kingdom of Saxony). Narrowed down, this area was a bit to the Southeast of Leipzig.

Eight children were born to this union, five males and three females.

The Hamann children were born between the years 1793 through 1907 in Koenigreich Sachsen.

This information was retrieved from Lutheran church records in present day Dippoldswalde.

If you have any Hamann family members that originated in the Kingdom of Saxony, I would appreciate hearing from you as the sons may have migrated to other areas of either Prussia or German speaking areas.

Regards, Robert Lipprandt

Re: Hamann Family

Looking though various messages listed in this line, one thing stands out if you are researching the surname Hamann.

The idea of any information before 1871 listing Germany as a birth place is false. Germany (as a country) did not exist until the capitol was moved from Ostpreussen (East Prussia) to the province of Brandenburg (Berlin) in 1871.

Before (depending upon the time frame), you either had Pruessen (Prussia), which touched France on the West to Litauen (Lithuania)/Slovokia in the east.

Unsually anything to the south was comprised of Koenigreich's (Kingdoms) or Hertzogum's (Duchies) associated with each other to not be over-run by the Prussians.

Enough of that.... getting back to the subject of this message!

If any of you know of your Hamann ancetors that came from
Siefertsdorf bei Dippoldswalde, Königreich Sachsen (Dippoldswoods, Kingdom of Saxony), I would appreciate your reply. Both Siefertsdorf and Dipploldwalde are a bit Southeast of Leipzig, in Saxony.

There are seven Hamann brothers and six Hamann sisters from this area of Saxony that are unaccounted for.

My American Hamann's settled in Town Centerville, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin (1848). Afterwards, there was a slight shift to neighboring Sheboygan County and by the third generation, into Clark County (central Wisconsin) and beyond.

Regards, Robert Lipprandt
(Ft. Lauderdale)

Though Wikipedia & Co should have some information on this town and it's history too.

In regard of the Hamanns - I know of a Anna Margareta Hamann (nee Fälber) who was living in New York in 1863. Does this sound somewhat familar to you?
Mystery solved. "Mrs. Hamann" was born Cecilia Stoltenberg in 1836 in Holstein, Germany. On 16 Feb. 1857 she married John F. Hamann in Davenport, Iowa. Cecilia died 14 Dec 1924 in Davenport, Iowa. Her brother was Joachim Stoltenberg, who was born Oct. 1820 in the area of Krokau in Probstei, Holstein, Plon, Germany; emigrated with his wife in their aged years to Clinton, Iowa; and Joachim died in Clinton in 1904. This was a brother and sister from Krokau area of Probstei. Looking for any further information.
Sara Gaarde

Not sure if this has any revelence in your search/research.

I am a Hamann DNA descendant (do not carry the Hamann surname) that originated in Koeningreich Sachsen (Kingdom of Saxony), then to South Manitowoc County and Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.

Stoltenberg is a name spread throughout those two counties in Wisconsin.

With freedom of migration in early America, it is not impossible to think that the two surnames in two states could possibly be related.

Huhn is another surname from Manitowoc/Sheboygan counties that would be in the mix.

Religious affiliation of the three surnames would either be E & R (todays UCC) or the various Lutheran synods and those three families married each others sons/daughters and coverted quite often.

Unfortunately, I have no information of much in Davenport.

Regards, Robert Lipprandt
(South Florida)

More details would help to narrow down which Charles Hamann you are after.

Also, just a note, when you type in all caps, it is considered shouting in email or on message boards. I know some folks have trouble with eyesight and use all caps for that reason, but it makes it more difficult to read.

Joy

My mother's father was the Henry Hamann who moved to Cloquet, Minnesota. He was born 11 Mar 1878 in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and died in Cloquet 9 Jan 1940. Within a year or two, his survivors (widow Mildred Christabel DeCou, daughters Marguerite--my mother--and Mildred and son Henry) had moved to California. I'd be happy to share the info I have about Henry's descendants. I have one old photo which I believe shows Henry and his parents and siblings, which I can e-mail you if you'd like. I'd love to have copies of any other photos if available. I got in contact with cousin Barb Turner a couple of years ago and have been remiss in staying connected with her. I'm starting to delve into the Hamann background in Germany/Pomerania and would welcome any information you may have on that. Here in southern California, there is a special interest group of the Immigrant Genealogical Society for Pommeranian research, and I plan to join the group shortly.

My grandmother, Bertha, was born in Washington county in 1869. They moved north to the Town of Agena, east of Butternut in Ashland county when she was very young. She married my grandfather, Henry Wegner and they lived just a few miles away. Her brother, John, lived on the home place. They had a brother, Henry, who moved to Cloquet, MN and a sister, Hattie, who lived in Mosinee, WI and had the married name of Jensen. They did come from Germany, but I don't know the place of origin.
Someone from the Mosinee area had started some research several decades ago, but I lost the name.

Thank you for your interest and response.

Harold Wegner, Minneapolis, MN

Greetings....

Not sure just how much information you have of the Butternut group, but I would be very interested in where they came from in Prussia/Germany and when they immigrated.

There is another fairly large group of Hamann's that settled in the Western townships of Marathon Co., Wisconsin.
Also would one day like to know where they came from in Prussia/Germany and immigration data.

My Hamann's (Saxony, immigrating to Twp. Centerville, Manitowoc Co., WI) immigrated in 1848 aboard the Flora McDonald. Religious preference was Lutheran or Evangelical Reformed. Eventually, the moved a bit south into Northern Sheboygan County. Sheboygan County also has at least four other Hamann families.

In the surname box, I will list known surnames from South Manitowoc/Northern Sheboygan. Those listed would be first generation marriages.

Hope something matches your information...

Robert Lipprandt
(Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

I have an original 4”x6” photograph in a presentation folder - of “Victor Hamann” on which is printed “My Confirmation”. I’d like to get this picture back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Momence (Kankakee Co.) IL and he looks to be about age 16.

I found Victor Hamann in the 1920 census for Sumner (Kankakee Co.) IL, age 13, oldest child of six children of Ruben & Anna Hamann. I went to 1910 census, and the father’s given name at that time was Rudolph. In SSDI, I found Victor Hamann with birthdate of 17 Feb 1906; and his death date was Jan 1981, with last address of Grant Park (Kankakee Co.) IL.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Victor Hamann

Hi, I believe the person you are looking for (or were) is
John Hamann born 28 Jan 1850 in Germany; son of John Hamann and his wife, Wilhelmina Burmeister. John had three sibs, Minna, Henry and August (August was my ggrandfather).
John died in 1890 in Milwauke (I Think; although I searched in Milwaukee for a d/c and never found one) I recently saw on ancestry.com that he married Elizabeth Praeger and that they had a large family.

If this is your family, too, I know more about John and Wilhelmina and their children.

Best Wishes, Kathy Carr

Long years in between. Just in case you still receive this mail: The polish regisseur made a short movie only. It had be shown (as i was told) on such small-movie insider festivals, one in Israel, one in the US. I found no evidence to be a relative of this terrible Heinrich Hamann, so i did not involve myself or keep more information. You can find an article about the nazi-criminal Heinrich Hamann in the german wikipedia. It looks to me as if fortunaltely the chance is high that he has absolutely nothing to do with your family either. Regarding your other questions i cannot help.

Lienan, Westfalen, is definitely an area of Germany that used to be part of Prussia. Recall that August Hamann says in 1870 that he was born in Prussia. I guess you got the Lienen/Westfalen info from the book you mentioned? Do you have Frederick's *exact* birthdate? Might be interesting to look for his birth record in the church records of Lienan.... I guess he was Lutheran? You never, know there might also be some Hamann's listed in the church records for Lienan...
Brian
Well, we agree on things. My great, great grandfather (Frederick) came from Lienan, Westfalen, Germany as far as I have been able to come up with.
I aslo am thinking that those children were from a previous marriage. I haven't a clue as to where Henrietta came from except Germany. They are listed in "The Genealogical Records of German Families in Allen County, Indiana" dated 1918 with very little information. I can't even seem to locate Frederick's parents, although they are listed in that book but I can not get info to match, the parents names I come up with doing research would be like in their 70's when they had him!!! He also went by the name Ernest. I have no clue as to if Henrietta and Frederick knew each other or not before coming here, just nothing but dead ends. Have a good evening and so nice to talk with you. Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks, now I see them in the census records. I see the 1900 record has her listed as born December 1846 and immigrating in 1876, which is consistent with the 1920 census. Maybe the August Hamann is an older brother pf Henrietta, who came earlier to America? Also, if Henrietta married already in 1877, just one year after she arrived, I wonder if she somehow knew Frederick Hermeler? Do you know where in Germany he came from?

In the 1880 Census, I'm thinking those born prior to 1877 might be Frederick Hermeler's children thru a previous marriage...

BTW, what was the first name of your great grandma and what is her birthdate?

My Hamman side is stuck in the mid 1700s, we came from Germany, but still don't know exactly where from in Germany...

Brian
Thanks for the clue Brian, I'll check that out! I know about the difference in census records but do know they were married in 1877 in Indiana. I also know they had 2 other daughters that are not listed on the 1880 census, my great grandmother and my great aunt, nothing is jiving here, that is part of my problem. In the 1900 census they are listed under Frederick Hemler, st. Joe Township, Allen County, Indiana and the girls are listed there but no one else from the previous census. I have found Frederick's record of immigration so I do know that is correct but nothing on Henrietta, my great, great, grandmother. 1910 Census shows them in Wayne Township, Allen County under Fred Hermeler. This is why I keep running into dead ends, hopefully the obits will give me soemthig more to go on. I really do appreciate all your work, thanks you so much. Are you related to the Hamann side? I do know her name has been spelled 3 different ways which is fairly common. Take care Brian!
