Hallihane? Skibbereen Cork, Tottenham London

Hi

I'm trying to trace my dad. My mum isn't 100% but think his surname was spelt hallihane, not hallihan. It seems to be much less popular than hallihan though, and that seems to be a popular surname from Cork.

I've found a relevant death record (1994). He lived in tottenham with his slightly older brother after moving from Cork (not sure when). They were both known as John, but I think his actual name might have been Daniel and his brother Patrick.

Would love to hear something back!

Thanks

Dan

Re: ancestry

Hi--

I've been searching for info on John P Hallahan for some time as that is the name of my half-brother. My Dad used the stage name of Jack Hallen, and he toured in vaudeville before settling in Chicago in the late 1920s. Dad divorced the mother of my half-brother and half-sister (Mary) sometime thereafter. My Mom married Jack Hallen in the early 1930s, at which time Jack became involved in staging shows at the 1933 Century of Progress world's fair in Chicago.

Your parents lived with us right after World War II, when the housing shortage forced a lot of families to share space. We called your Dad "Big Pat" to distinguish him from my sister Patricia and his and Betsy's first child Patricia (whom we referred to as "Patty Bum-Bums" as she was still an infant).

The last time I saw Big Pat or Betsy in person was at my Dad's funeral in 1949, at which time he was 26 years old.

When I was in college I opened up the Sun-Times one afternoon and saw a picture of your whole family in front of a local hospital upon the birth of their 12th child.

Hope this helps in establishing whether we are related.

Nora

He did have a brother James,Pat,Bob and a sister named Ann, I have been in contact with a lady I believe to my cousin named Mimi who has filled in the blanks for me. I believe there was a brother named George as well. You can contact me at "Sailpappy" at "Hotmail" dot "com" if you wish to investigate further.
Most of the family tree is still in the shade for me also!
My family lived in Brooklyn for many years. My Great-great Grandfather, James J. Hallahan, was a veteran of the Civil War. He lost an eye at the Battle of Gettysburg. He and his wife, Sarah Caroline Bristol had 7or8 children who survived infancy. I know there was a Thomas(myGreat Grandfather), a George, as well as girls. I will try to find names for you.Good luck in your search. If you know any details, like where in Brooklyn, that would help. This was a "mixed" marriage and the Protestants didn't keep up with the Catholics! Do the names DeeDee & Dolly ring a bell?Let me know.

Re: Mary Hallahan m. William Delahunt ca 1852, New Brunswick

Hello Shirley!

Thank you for responding - William Delahunt was my great-great grandfather, and I'd love to share information. I descend from his son Joseph (married to Margaret Alexander). Joseph and Margaret migrated to the U.S. in 1909 and settled in Pawtucket, RI. I was able to get the names of William Delahunt and Mary Hallahan from a marriage certificate of Joseph and Margaret, but since I haven't yet been able to travel to New Brunswick, and the records available for that time period in New Brunswick are limited here, I haven't been able to confirm any ancestors beyond that. I was able to find William and Mary in the 1871 and 1881 Canadian census returns, so I have a list of children: William (ca 1853), Elizabeth (ca 1855), John James (ca 1857), Richard (ca 1860), Mary (ca 1861), Margaret (ca 1863), Martin (ca 1866), Joseph (ca 1868), Caroline (ca 1870) and Michael (ca 1871). Does this match the information you have? When my great grandfather Joseph was naturalized in the US, there was a young girl named Carrie (8 yrs old) listed with his children - I'm guessing she was a niece, since he didn't have a daughter by that name and he had a sister named Caroline. I've seen and recorded other Delahunt families in the Moncton area, but haven't been able to piece them all together yet - I only have theories about the relations at this point. I would love to know the parents of William Delahunt and where they came from - whether they were the first immigrants to Canada and from where in Ireland they came. If you are researching other Delahunt families in the Moncton area, maybe you have figured out the connections? Which brother of William is your ancestor? Any information you'd be willing to share is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Christine
HALLAHAN on U.S. Railroad Accidents Message Board

Did any of your HALLAHAN ancestors work or travel on the railroads? Were any involved in train collisions or other mishaps? I have created a message board on Ancestry.com for U.S. Railroad Accidents. There is already at least one posting involving a HALLAHAN.

PLEASE BE FOREWARNED THAT SOME OF THE NEWS ARTICLES ARE GRAPHIC in regard to horrible injuries and deaths. Railroading involved many dangers and gruesome tragedies over the years.

If you have news articles or stories regarding accidents that occurred on the railroads, in train depots, on train bridges, etc., please post them on the Railroad Accidents board along with ALL surnames involved. And be sure to check the board for your surnames. Stories will be added regularly. The new board is here:

Boards>Topics>Disasters>United States>Railroad Accidents

Go to main Message Boards Page.
Use the “Find a Message Board” box to search on Railroad Accidents, and follow the links to the board;
OR
Under topics click on “browse all topics.”
Click on Disasters.
Click on United States.
Click on Railroad Accidents.

If you think you’ll want to return to this category regularly, go to the Railroad Accidents message board and from just above the messages click on Add to Favorites or Add to Notifications. This will make it much easier to access the Railroad Accidents board on future visits to Ancestry.com.
I am still searching for additional information about M. A. Hallahan, once an early school teacher in the rural area of Portland Mills in the early 1900's. I have been unable to find out where he went after he obviously left Portland Mills probably in a "career move." I recently found a clue to the location of his former home in a brief write-up as follows:
9/19/1901 M.A. Hallahan, a teacher in Portland Mills, is a native of St. Lawrence county, NY and was known in the area as an "all around athlete." Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

My father was John Joseph Hallahan Jr. from the Perth Ambouy area of New Jersey. He claimed to be 1 of 13 children and also 1 of a set of twin boys, his faher was a Tatter (lace Maker) and he had some sort of troubled past as he would never tell us of our aunts and uncles on his side of the family.
I have searched for many of my 52 years with no success, I am hoping someone out there recognises this story. Dad said he was arrested for stealing Bread to help feed his brothers and sisters, That is the only thing he ever told me!
I learned that he married my Mother in Georga under the name of John Barnett and had to remarry her under his real name, seems he had a step family in Texas by that name?
Any information at all, good or bad will fill a life long void!
Thanks John J Hallahan III
