Albert Thomas Hainer or Thomas Albert Hainer was born in Crystal Falls Michigan in December, 1917. His father was German and his mother Slovak, according to what I have been told. He had a brother named Joseph. The family went back to Bratislava, Slovakia, around 1920. He lived there until he returned to the US in October, 1949, eventually settling in Detroit. He died in October 1977. I would like any information on anyone on either side of his family tree.

Patricia: My husband's mother's family were Hainers. I have done a lot of research on the Hainers, here in Dutchess
County, NY. Probably one of your stumbling blocks is the
spelling of the name. It has so many variations: Hayner,
Haner, Heiner, Hoener and many other variations. Johannes Haner baptized on 1/22/1675 was one of four trustees to whom 6,000 acres were granted in what is the present Germantown NY for use of the Palatines. He is no doubt the earliest Hainer ancestor. There is a book, which I sent for all about this family: A Haner/Hayner Family in America. I found it on line. Just type in the book title and I am sure the website will come up. Good Luck, Jeanette

They settled in Burford Township, Brant County. Her siblings were Mary, Permilla, William, James Murray, Dianne, Charles Henry, Julia, Amos and John Wesley. I have William born about 1828/29 married a girl named Delilah. Maybe this will help.

Here's a story written by Eva Shafley Craun in 1950. It talks about Louise Hainer's father being remarried. Maybe this will help.

"Peter was the smallest in build as well as the youngest, so with 3 older heartier brothers to help their father he had less farm work to do. As he was growing up his mind turned more to music and he spent a great deal of time with it.

When 25 years of age he was married to Louise Hainer, the daughter of a well established family in Welland, County. Louise's mother, whose family name was Wills, had died when she was small and her father had remarried. At Louise's marriage her Grandfather Wills gave her the share of his property which would have been her mother's - a farm with excellent buildings. The large square red brick house still stands on the farm and looks much the same as it did 80 years ago. They built them solid, firm and strong in the early days.

Peter and Louise lived on this farm in Wainfleet only about 3 1/2 yrs. when they sold it and moved to Michigan in the fall of 1875. Louise, with Trulie 2 1/2 yrs. old and Thersea a baby of 4 months, came by train and stayed with Peter's brother Dours and his family until Peter arrived. He drove his team and light carriage, a 2 seated buggy, through from Wainfleet, Ontario to Iona County, Michigan. They lived on a farm in Duplain Township, Clinton County for 4 years then bought a farm in Bengal Township near where Dours had bought a place.

This farm was 80 acres on section eight. Several years later he bought another 80 acres on section five - across the road from his first eight acres. Peter lived out his life on this farm, prospering and putting up fine new buildings. He died there about a month after his 59th birthday. Louise sold the farm 2 years later and moved to St. Johns, Michigan where she lived for over 20 yrs to the age of 82 years." - E.S.C. (1950)

Henry Haynor/Hayner (Haynor spelling may vary)

Henry Haynor was born 1793, son of Abram Haynor. He was living in the Saratoga, NY area in 1824 when he married Roxy Clements, who was from the Saratoga area. Roxy was born in 1809. They had several children, Tobias and Isaac being born in New York bsefore the family moved to Ionia County, Michigan around 1838. Henry may have been born in the Saratoga or Rennselear County areas, since there is an Abram Haynor listed as a contributor to a Rock City Falls church. I've also heard that Abram and family lived in the Syracuse, NY area.........also Pennsylvania Dutch country in Pennsylvania. Am trying to find more information on Henry Haynor before he came to Michigan. Does anyone have an idea where I might find some?

Abram Haynor (Haynor spelling may vary)

Abram Haynor was the father of Henry H. Haynor. Henry was born 1793, lived at Saratoga, NY when he married Roxy Clements in 1824, then moved to Ionia Co., Michigan around 1837. I have had leads that Abram was a POW in Europe and basically banned to America as punishment; another version has it that he was a Hessian who fought in the Revolutionery War for England and was imprisoned north of Syracuse, NY.......later released to settle in Pennsylvania Dutch country in Pennsylvania; and of course the other version that he lived in the Rennselear County, NY area.........in fact there is an Abram Haynor listed as a contributor to a Rock City Falls Church, but no other data. Am trying to locate any trace of Abram............does anyone have a clue where I might look to learn more?

I don't know if your email will work after this long of time, so I will post here in hopes that you check in still. I have a Walter R. Hainer in my family database. He was born abt 1928 in NY to Walter R. Hainer and Anna Marie Koepka. I wonder if this is your family Hainer. Not many Walter R's show up.
I have been working on the Koepka tree. Anna would be my husbands GG Aunt.
Ila

Hainer family

My g-g-g-grandmother was named Hannah Hainer, born in Louth, (Lincoln), Ontario in 1825. Her mother's maiden name was Grass. Hannah's husband was Matthew Seburn, and my understanding is that the lands they owned in Louth were from a UEL grant. I have a photo of Hannah taken in 1857, and she is obviously Native/Mohawk (as were her children and grandchildren), so I'm not sure how she fits into the Hainer family genealogy, since the Hainers seem to have been German. Anyone else out there with Indian Hainer ancestors?

I notice your message saying that you had a Hainer Tree. I to have Hainer's in my family tree from my mother's side of the family her mother's name was Elta Hainer, whose parents were Joseph H. Hainer and Nettie Louise Currier. Elta died when my mother was about 2 years old. Joseph and Nettie raised her. Joseph and Nettie had 3 other daughters also. I have that Joseph Hainer's father was Andrew Hainer born in Prince Edward Island between 1834 or 1835 and married a Corinthay McCombs born between 1839 and 1840 and they 4 sons one of which was Joseph and 1 daughter. I don't know if you have any of these names in your tree, but if you do I sure would like to have any information that you have.
Hi.. I happened upon your threads on the bulletin board..

I'm trying to trace Peter Hainer on back.. I've determined that you two that were discussing on the bb were looking for the info coming from Louise Hainer. I'm decended from Peter's second wife Annie Moore.

Louise's mother was Rosana Willis. Rosana had William Henry (died young) and Louise born October 8, 1852.

Now do you by chance have Peter Hainer on back?
Hello again Sharon. Sorry so long in getting back to this subject. i've got my new computer up and running now and ready for genealogy. If you'd like, I can send you a file on the Hansler family.

I don't have anything in my database on the Sloughs. A number of years ago I was in correspondence with Brian Slough and received some info from him which I haven't yet verified. I believe Rosannah/Rosina Slough was possibly the grand-daughter of Anna Margaretha Hertzel. (You seem to be missing a generation there).

If you want to give me a list of Vernon & Alice Robinson's children I will add them to my database.

Thanks again for the info you already provided in your previous post.

-Chris Wills

Re: Henry Hainer, German Immigrant

JOHN B. HAINER, one of the successful farmers of West Bethlehem township, is a son of G. H. Hainer, who was born in Germany where he married Christina Loewer. They emigrated to this country and to Washington county, Penn., in 1832, bringing with them the following children: John B., Mary, Henry, Christina, Adam, Catherine and George; two other children Elizabeth and Nicholas were born in America. They are all living except Catherine. Nicholas and Adam are in the grocery business and live in New Castle, Penn.; Elizabeth is in Wheeling, W. Va.; Mary, George and Henry live in Ohio, and Christina is in Indiana.

John B. Hainer, son of the pioneer G. H. was born January 26, 1816 in Germany, and attended the schools of his native land, being under one instructor seven years. At the expiration of that time he was released from further attendance through the aid of influential friends, although the German law requires eight years' schooling for every boy. He then came to America with his father, and when nineteen years of age assisted in the cultivation of a farm in South Strabane township. He married Elizabeth Lauterbauch, who had also come to America, her father settling in Washington county. The following children have been born to them: Henry, John, George, Catherine, Adam, Jacob, Mary and Edward. Henry died at the age of twenty-eight years; the remainder are residents of Washington county.

Jacob Hainer was born in Canton township, this county, April 28, 1851. He now lives with his father. On October 17, 1874, he married Esther, daughter of Frederick Rasel, and they have the following family: George, Annie, Sadie, Norman, Flora and Nellie, all yet under the paternal roof. Mr. Hainer and his father, who resides with him, are both stanch Republicans, and in religion all the family are members of the Lutheran Church.

Henry is my Gr-Gr-Gr Uncle

I have a feeling your Emily Hainer is my Emily Haner (b 9 Nov 1839 d. 29 May 1896, Big Creek wv, Logan Co., VA now WV). I have a good amount of information on her.

She was born in Logan, WV to Noah Haner and Mary Elizabeth Barker. She was first married in 1859 to Leander Frank Gillenwater (1837-1861)

They had at least one child, Web Terrell (Tell) Gillenwater, for whom I have a number of descendants.

After Franks death, I believe she remarried Mames "Jim" Stowers in 1878 in WV. She would have been 40 and he I think 24. I can't confirm yet that they are the same person (really just started researching this line today actually) but do have a mention of her as "Emily Gillenwater Stowers" which makes me think that this must be her in her second marriage.

I don't have any new info yet on the descendants of her 2nd marriage? Maybe you can help?

I'm researching her just because her father, Noah Haner, was brother to my gggrandmother Lethia J Haner who married William Bell, had a child Albert Bell who married Bettie Toney who had a child Virgie Beatrice Bell who married John Dan Goodin my grandfather. Any of those look familiar?

Thanks!

Tom Goodin

I am looking for any one that has any information on a Joseph H. Hainer. He was born in 1863 in St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada. He died in 1935. He married and Nettie Louise Courier. She was born 1866 and died 1954. I believed she died in St. Johns, Michigan. They had a daughter named Hazel Estelle Hainer. I don't know the year she was born in. But she died Dec. 16th, 1966 in Carson City, MI. and was buried Dec. 19th 1969 in St. Johns, MI. There was also another daughter and her name was Elta Hainer and she died somewhere in 1918 or some where around there. Elta is my Grandmother. If anyone has any information on any of these names I would appreciate hearing from you.

Re: Ancestors and descendants of William HAINER of Brant Co., Ontario

Hi Berry
Thanks for the info. We are trying to find the death date and place of William HAINER's wife who was actualy Elida NICKERSON. Some sources give her as Delilah but Bible record and correspondance confirms that she was Elida. She and William are in the 1881 census for Lapeer, Michigan and she is living in 1890. We presume that she died in Michigan but haven't found proof yet. Researching all NICKERSON descendants of Eliud NICKERSON, UEL.
Regards
Bruce Johnson

Looking for parents and descendants of William HAINER given in 1871 census index as age 41 Carpenter, at Buford (div. 4, p. 44) Did he have a wife Elida NICKERSON? If so would like to find marriage record. Did he have children? Believe that he is same person as given in 1880 Michigan census for Lapeer. Need death and g.s. information.
Can provide information on Elida's siblings and ancestors.
Bruce Johnson

Hainer-Wills?-Shafley

Does anyone have any documentation of a marriage between a Peter Hainer and a Rosanna Wills? (ca. 1850 Niagara region, Ont. Canada). Or any information on Louisa Hainer who married Peter Shafley and moved to Michigan?

Why I ask (please bear with me):
I am researching the Wills family, specifically descendants of Anthony Wills of Wainfleet Twp., Welland Co., Ontario, Canada. When I read his last will and testament (drafted 1873, executed 1880) there was mention of a grand-daughter, Hannah Margery Shaftley [sic], whom I had heard of (dau. Philip Wills, m.Paul Shafley) and a grand-daughter Louisa Catharine Shaftley [sic] whom I had not previously heard of. Louisa was given 100 acres in the south half of Lot 40, Concession 5, Wainfleet Twp. Page's Atlas (1876) shows a Peter Shafley living on this same property -Louisa's husband or father perhaps? I found the registration of marriage between Peter Shafley and Louisa Hainer (both resident of Wainfleet Twp.) on Sept. 3 1872. Louisa's parents are listed as Peter and Rosanna. I am tempted to think a Peter Hainer married a Rosanna Wills, daughter of Anthony, sometime in the 19th Century, but I would like to be able to confirm this. Has anyone ever heard of these two?

The Shafleys have a website which shows Peter and Louisa Shafley moved to Michigan and had 3 children: Trulie Angeline, Theresa Margaret and Chauncey Levi. Peter Shafley d.June 6 1906 Bengal Twp., Clinton Co. MI, his wife Louisa (Hainer) Shafley d.Febr. 1934 St. Johns MI.
