The Levi David Hain Family & More

To any of you research the Hain Family you are welcome to go to ancestry.com and check out my Kelly/Riffle Tree. I have noticed there are many of you researching this family. That portion of the tree is in progress but, I'm sure there will be something or someone on there to help you out. I will start with my 2nd G Grandmother Amelia Minnie Hain 1872-1962 and go back, starting with her parents: Levi David Hain 1835-1909 & Maribee Putnam, Jacob Hain 1790-1886 & Catherine Lowman, John or Jacob Hain 1755-1825 & Roseanna (have not found her maiden name anywhere yet!), Joshua Haines 1726-1794 (looking for when the spelling of last name changed) & Elizabeth Harris, Jacob Haines 1698-1742 & Mary Coles, William Haines 1672-1754 & Sarah Paine, Richard Haines 1636-1682 & Margaret Leeds, John Richard Haines 1614 -1639 & Elizabeth Stanford. And many more, all the way back to my 13 Great Grandfather Nicholas Haynes (is this the first correct spelling of the last name?) 1529-1585) & Ann Elcock 1519. I hope something in my tree will help you ALL! Just remember it is still a work in progress.

Heinrich Heine did not, himself, have children. However he had brothers and sisters who did have families, and all of us who are related to him are descendents of his neices and nephews. I am the third generation on that side of my family to be born in the US, and my son is the fourth generation here. Still there is a connection that we all share as Heine descendents. I hope this helps.

Yes, depending on the census it's either Hain or Hein. From what I can tell, it looks like Maria and Mary are one in the same. (I think I saw his name spelled Lorenz somewhere as well.) If that is the case, and I believe it is, it looks like she and Lawrence had eleven children: Jacob, Anna, Barbara, Elizabeth, Philip, Joseph, Lawrence, Valentine, Louis, Rose and Ida.

Joe,

I am a direct descendent of Adam Hain, Samuel's father. Samuel's sister, Martha, was my ggg great grandmother.

I have a picture that we believe to be either Samuel or his brother Eli who died at Gettysburg. Unfortunately the picture was not marked. It was found among our family photos. (We have additional Hain pictures if interested.) Do you have a picture of either Samuel or Eli to compare?

Have you been able to uncover any further information about Samuel or Eli?
Hello, 'palenz'. I am responding, a bit delayed, to your post of over one year ago. I am a descendant in the Hain family about whom you wrote. I have just started researching the family, and your post actually helped me. I did not have the names of my great-great-grandparents (Valentin and Margaret). I did have the immigration date of 1852 for my great-grandfather, Lorenz - one child of Valentin and Margaret. Lorenz married a Mary ___ who emigrated to Erie in 1853, and they had 12 children, one of whom, Valentine (yes with the 'e' on the end), was my grandfather. According to census information I have found that Lorenz was a carpenter. My grandfather, Valentine, was in the US Navy and served during the Spanish-American war. I have some other names and info, but it seems that you are searching previous to anything I have found. What other information do you have?

My e-mail is "shhain@verizon.net" If you have digital copies of information that you mentioned. I see we have another relative interested in our family history. Let me know your e-mail and I'll send what may be interesting for you. The photo of Lorenz and Mary is rather dim, but I'm going to try to ehance it a bit. I did find a website for bad Neustadt an der Saale. It has a web-cam in the city square that is live. There is also a link to a 50+ page 'tourist directory' which has a lot of information. However, I'm going to have to learn some German to get much out of it.

Cheers,
Harry

Diane,

Yes, I can scan and e-mail the photo and obit. I'll try to get that done within the next couple days. I have your e-mail from the message you sent to Pam. I would like to see any photos/info you have. Regarding the name, it really depends on the source. In some cases, the census taker, or immigration officials just spelled names phonetically (since they probably didn't speak German). I have found information under Hain, Hein, Haines, Hind, etc. We just have to compare names/dates to see which of the names are truly who we think they are. From the latest census I have located, Both Lorenz and my grandfather, Valentine, used the "Hain" spelling, but some of Lorenz' other children went with the "Hein" version - confusing, at times.

Cheers,
Harry

Yes, I live in west Millcreek. Surprised to see this reply.

My grandparents, Valentine and Catherine (Jehle), my Aunt Amelia and my Father, William, and an Uncle Leo, who died in early childhood, are all buried in Trinity cemetary, as well. The Spanish-American war 'Valentine' was my Grandfather. So far, I have kept my searches to no-cost alternative, which limits the amount of information I have found. A Latter Day Saints database "www.familysearch.org" is one free source, but not complete. Guess I'll have to spend something to get more. I do have two scrapbooks that my Grandmother kept. One contains several obituaries, including that of my Great-Grandfather, Lorenz. That obituary is from the Erie newspaper from 1904 says he emigrated from Germany in 1845. His birthplace was listed "Nieustaat an Ger Sall, Bavaria". But that may be some local writer trying to spell some German city name. The 1852 immigration date does appear in the 1900 census. So, I'm not sure of what the correct year might be. That same census lists Lorenz' wife's year of immigration as 1853, but Lorenz and Mary were married in 1853. The other scrapbook contains a number of local
newpaper articles about the Spanish-American War, when my Grandfather was serving in the US Navy. I also have one dim photograph of my great-grandparents, Lorenz and Mary (Rastatter)

Some mysteries remain!

Cheers,
Harry

Hello!

Great to hear from you! I actually have much, much information...too much to include here! Your great-grandfather, Lorenz, was a twin to my great-great grandfather, Michael.

I believe the 1852 immigration date is incorrect, as a census record shows the family living in Erie in 1850.

Many of our family are buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Erie, including Valentin, Margaret, Lorenz, Mary, Michael and his wife Maria, and the Spanish-American War Valentine.

The family was originally from Hohenroth in Bavaria. I have corresponded with some living relatives which is interesting, as they only speak German!

I am fortunate to live in the Erie area, so have been able to do much onsite research in the past two years. One of my "missions" is to discover precisely when they immigrated and on what ship. A document in the Erie County Courthouse lists them as coming over in 1850, but I have been able to find nothing else concrete. Perhaps a trip to the National Archives in Washington D.C. this summer may help.

Do you live around Erie?

Pam

Perhaps my favorite is "Hind!"

As I told Harry, I would be happy to share some of my electronic files if you want to share your email address.
Hi Harry,

It is great to finally link up with someone else related to and interested in the Hains! I live in McKean (about 10 minutes from the mall).

I've done all of my Hain research myself as well, but it's amazing what you can find. The naturalization documents for Valentine (Michael and Lorenz' father), Michael, and Lorenz are on microfilm in the Erie County Courthouse. It lists their year of arrival as 1850. As they appear on the 1850 Erie census (September, 1850) they must have arrived here within a year or so of that date.

The town from which they came in Bavaria is Hohenroth, in Neustadt an der Saale. I have corresponded with the parish secretary who looked up some church records and have also emailed a descendant of one of Valentine's sisters. She doesn't know much about the Hain family, rather more about her paternal side. I continue to search in hope that I can find exactly when they came to the U.S., the port they sailed from, and the ship they arrived on.

I am in the process of assembling my information, but if you would like to send your email address I'll be glad to send you electronic copies of what I have together.

How fortunate that you have photos! If you could possibly scan and send me a copy of the photo of Lorenz that would be wonderful. He and Michael, my ggg-grandfather, were identical twins so that would be the next best thing to having a photo of Michael. It is said that Michael and Lorenz used to change places on dates, and that they looked so much alike the girls couldn't tell them apart. I guess some things don't change over the years! I have a second cousin who has some photos of the family, but she is being rather proprietary with regard to sharing copies I offered to have made at my expense. If I ever am able to obtain some of these photos, I'll let you know.

Thanks!

Pam

I am looking for immigration information for the Hain family in Erie, PA (also spelled Hein). Valentin Hain (a carpenter) was born about 1811 and came from Neustadt, Hohenroth, Rhein-Bayern, Bavaria around 1850-1852. Also immigrating were his wife, Margaret (Endres), and children; twins Michael and Lorenz (b. approx. 1829), Franz Michael (also known as Frank, b. approx. 1839), Emmerencia (b. approx. 1843), Margaret (b. approx. 1846), and Katharina (b. approx. 1848). More information available if needed. Thank you!!

The Lawrence for whom I have records is supposed to have died on March 29, 1905. Do you have a date of death? I'm in the process of cataloguing information and will keep working on this.

I might have made an error with the wife and children's names as I'm still sorting things out (and also due to a variety of spellings for Hein on the census forms). The other possibility is wife Maria and children Jacob, Anna, Barbara, and Elizabeth. Let me know and I'll work on this some more.
Jackpot! I've had time to go through things and Lorenz and Lawrence Hein and Hain are indeed the same person. He did have a twin, Michael, who was my great-great grandfather. I have spent much time in the library doing research, and my mother and aunt just gave me information about their father that I would be glad to share. I've been trying to find information regarding the ship they came on (and have met with frustration) , and wondered how you happen to know they came in 1852. That's the information I have, too, but sometimes that isn't right. If we combine what we have maybe we can solve the mystery. The information I've put together is in spreadsheet form (Excel). If you would email me at palenz@verizon.net I'll send it to you plus other information I've gathered that doesn't fit here.

Greetings Cousin,
I am Bert Young a direct descendant of Christian Young one of Elizabeth Young's two brothers. The other brother was Henry Young.
I have had some great successes in tracing the collateral Hain line through world connect at rootsweb. I have corresponded with a couple of living fifth cousins in the Hain line. One of which has evolved into the Bean line.
I trust that you are not one of these previous cantactees from a couple of years ago.
We are descendants of Felix Young and Elizabeth Vandersaal.
Until recently my family tradition was that Felix Jung (Young)came to America after the Revolutionary war or was a Hessian mercenary in that war and either deserted or came back after the war.
I now have convincing proof that Felix was born in Pennsylvania and had two brothers. It was his father Reinhard Jung that came from Germany. I have found Reinhard's name and signature on the passenger list of his ship and the names of the three brothers on tax rolls living on adjacent farms in Pennsylvania in 1800,
I will be happy to share these researches with you. I will be happy to exchange family trees with you.
You may e-mail me at uncaberty59-geneal@yahoo.com
Regards,
Cousin Bert Young

Harry,

We are related! Lorenz Hein and Mary Rastatter were my great great grandparents. My grandmother was Marie Hain, daughter of Lorenz Hain, Jr. She married Herbert Arthur Beard. I would love to have a copy of your photo of Lorenz and Mary Rastatter, if you have a digital copy of it. My father has been scanning our old family photos, but we don't have any of Lorenz and Mary. I have some old photos of the Hain girls (my grandmother Marie and her siblings) that you might be interested in. I had read somewhere that the name was really spelled Hein. Is there any chance I could get a copy of Lorenz Hain's obituary? Is there a way I can get in touch with you?

Diane

Hi Pam,

I don't know if these would be of interest to you, but I have copies of photos of Lorenz Hain, Jr.'s family (my great grandfather). He had lots of daughters and we have a few pictures of them as children. They are lovely old photos. My father scanned them, so we now have digital copies.

Here is my email address:

diane2beard@gmail.com
