Hi Marc,
Your name peaked my interest because I have Haimowitz who married Cohn in my family - all from Isai. There were 2 sisters, Gizella and Rosika and a brother named Isadore who
later changed his name to Eugene Haimes. Gizella married Harry Cohn and her children were Arthur, George, Pauline, Jenny and Martin. Rosika married a Cohn but I do not know who or anything about her except that I have a picture of her in 1933 when she traveled back to Europe with my cousin's grandmother and Eugene.

Looking for Cohn/Cohen is virtually impossible. I am wondering if you are descended from Rosie/Rosika?

Jodi

Hmm, I don't think so. Our Isador Haimowitz was born July 12 1870, died Oct 16, 1946 and his parents were Kasrill (or Casriel) Haimu with wife Ida. His brother Bernard was 1878-1949. Isador and Bernard were two of 8 children. Isador was married to Rebecca, they had 5 children, Pauline, Ray, Jack, David, and Sidney, born between 1900 and 1911. Tell me, tho, if I'm missing something...

I am the great great granddaughter of an Isadore Haimowitz from Iasi Romania. My Isadore had more than one wife - the last one being my great, great grandmother Chaya or Clara Pooker or Paulker. Isadore Haimowitz and Clara had 6 children but my mother has a picture of a half brother to the 6 named Herman who was a Colonel in the Romanian army (the highest post that a Jew could hold). Do you think my g g grandfather is the brother of the family you are asking about? I have heard that Isadore's father may have been named Samuel.Isadore was born 1849 and died in 1933. In his picture he looks like Colonel Sanders.

Most of his children were Hymowitz, although one became Moskowitz at Ellis Island. The Moskowitz's on my tree are Bernie, Beverly, Harry, Helen, Marty and Willie. Also, I have Minnie Kaplan (b 1906) who married Sammie Heimowitz.

Any matches?

My husband is the grandson of Bernard Haimowitz who was born March 26, 1878 in Yasse Roumania. He died May 14, 1949 and is buried in the Mt Hebron Cemetery, Queens. His wife was Bertha Kaplan, who was of Russian descent. According to Bernard's daughter, Edith, his siblings included Esther (m David Moskowitz), Jennie (m Will Babbit), Rose (m Joe Ollenback/Plenbeck), Isadore (m Rebecca), Morris (m Cecilia), Jack (m Lily), and Sidney (n Beatrice).

It appears that Jerry Haimowitz, of this thread, has some matching information - his relation is Morris.

Interested in learning more!

Our records have Bernard's father as Kasrill Haimu, but we have nothing about his mother, except she might be named Edith and she died before 1917.

We have a Hyman Haimovitch from Iasi in our tree although his son Morris that came to the UK about 1901 spelt it Haimovis on his wedding certificate and then as Haimovitz a couple years later on one of his daughter's (my grandmother) birth certificate and then later standardized to Haimovitch.

Only one son of Hyman came to the UK but we are convinced that other sons or daughters went to the US and lately we have started trying to look for connections.

You can see the complete UK tree downwards from Hyman through his son Morris at our family website www.haimovitch.com

Could this be the same Hyman?
Hi Jerry

My great grandfather Morris Haimovitch left Jassy with his brother in 1900. Morris stayed in the UK while his brother continued his voyage to New York. We do not know the brother's name but a search of the Ellis Island records shows a David Haimovici from Jassy arriving in New York in 1900. We are wondering if this is the brother we have been trying to trace. We have published our family tree at www.haimovitch.com.

Regards

Alan Haymes

I've recently found new info since I last posted years ago. I've discovered that my great grandfather, Josef Himovitch, had a brother Louis. Their parents were Nathan and Malke (nee Salmon). Louis married Victoria Moscowitz, who was the sister of Josef's wife Bertha (Clara) Moscowitz (my g-gmother). It was while visiting Victoria and Louis in Brooklyn that my gfather Sam met my gmother, who lived across the street. Louis and Vict. had 3 children, Nathan (changed to Haines, I think), Rose and Jacob. Any matches here?

I am looking for information on relatives from Vienna. My mother was born there in 1934 and fled Austria for London and eventually the U.S. with her mother (my grandmother) in 1938. My grandmother's maiden name was Litzi Haimowitz, born in Vienna in July 1907. The Haimowitz family owned a chain of grocery stores which were called Bruder Haimovitz. My grandmother's parents names were Adolph (Abraham) and Rachel Haimowitz (born in 1883). I am pretty sure that Abraham and Rachel were both originally from Jasi, Romania. Their children were Fritz, Litzi, and Herta.

I have documents with the following names of other relatives, but do not know how they are related:
Siegmund (Sigmund) Haimovitz, Friedrich Haimovitz (born 1902, this is probably my grandmother's brother Fritz), Paula Haimovits (born 1913), Richard Haimovitz, Zisla Haimovitz, Paul Haimovitz, Cisla Haimovitz (born 1875, had two sons born in 1906 and 1908).

Thank you in advance for any information!

Here is a coincidence - my name is Alan Haymes and my great grandfather was Morris Haimovitch who left Jassy, Romania in early 1900's to come to the UK. We have been trying to trace brothers who we believe went to the US about the same time. We have posted up our family tree at www.haimovitch.com

I now live in Durham, NC. I actually met your grandfather Philip when I was very young. I think my father knows a lot about the family history, but, unfortunately he is not very good about passing those stories on. i hope you are still getting notification from these posts. Let me know if you get this message.

Marian

My grandfather, Louis Hymowitz, left Jasse in 1910-20 and settled in Brooklyn, NY. I am not certain of his father's name. I have a vague reccollection from my father that his name was Chaim Yankel, although that may have been a joke on me as that was also the name of a popular Yiddish comedian of the day.

Louis' sibs were Bennie, Henry, Sammie, Alice, Thelma, Annie and Joey. The women married into the Fader, Horowitz and Moskowitz families.

Mitchell

Can anyone make any connections - I understand my family came from Russia - although my father always said it was Lithuania - On my aunt's marriage license it said Haimowicz - but I knew the family name as Honowitz - later changed to Hunn - we were from Philadelphia = although I understand part of the family was in New Haven, Ct.

Sound familiar to anyone??

My grandfather was Shmuel - Samuel and my grandmother Rebecca nee Shils - they had five children - Lena, Simon, Harry (my father) Albert and Rose.

As far as I understand Simon changed his name in the early 1900s to be able to go to college - and the rest of the family followed suit.

There was also an uncle Avrumel who made wine in the basement in WEst Philadelphia - I guess during prohibition.

If it sounds at all familiar, please contact me.

Thanks

I'd still love to talk with you or your sister. Email me at jhaymes@aol.com if you want. The only new info I have on Josef is his parents name--Malke and Nathan. Its not absolute but if he is in fact Louis' brother then that's their name. However, I've got tons of new info on g-grandmother Bertha/Clara Moskowitz. (See Moskowitz board for update) Look forward to hearing from you and hope you and you're family are well.

Josef Haimowitz/Himovich, Romania

I'm trying to find relatives of my great-grandfather Josef Himovich/himowitz/hiamowitz, among others. The spelling has been a serious problem as I have yet to find more than two documents with the same spelling.
Josef was born in Nov. of 1864 in Romania. He married Clara (sometimes called Bertha)Moskowitz in Romania and migrated to NYC around 1887. They had three sons, each of whom spelled the name differently--Sam Hiamowitz (my grandfather), Frank Heimowitz, and Philip Haimowitz. Josef later left this family and moved to Cape Town, South Africa where he married Rachel Golinger and had two more children, Henry Himer and Netty Himovich.

Hi Cousin Cliff,

Yes we do share great-grandparents! My father is Carl Haymes and his brother is Stan Haymes(he's the doctor you know of). And yes, my grandfather changed the family's name to Haymes so that Uncle Stan could be accepted to medical school.
Your mother Lynn is their only first cousin on the Haimowitz side, as great-Uncle Frank never had children. My father and uncle remember your mother and grandparents well. There are many more details of our family tree that I look forward to sharing with you. I'll be in touch soon.
