Thomas Boyle Hagan I was my grandma's cousin. His parents were John Edward and Martha Jane (Boyle) Hagan. They were from PA, but moved to Missouri (1867)and Kansas (1878) with Martha's uncle, Barnard Stoughton. Note: Barnard's second wife was also John Edward Hagan's mother. Sometime after his father's death, Thomas Hagan then moved to Arkansas with his second wife, Naomi Ward. His first wife was Bridget Barry. I would love to hear from the Sadler's or anyone else that has information on this family.

Just so there is no controversy introduced into our HAGAN message board - as researchers we are all searching for the truth of trail of our heritage. YDNA testing has been an invaluable tool to aid us in sorting out our specific lines - which have, in certain lines, uncovered mixtures of AmerIndian and Melungeon aka Mulatto (tri-racial) blood lines. There is plenty of website info about Melungeon mixtures and all should peruse the sites. Personally I find it fascinating to know my HAGAN line is not at all of Irish roots (Thomas the Immigrant Hagan) but that of "double American Indian". If this implies my ancestry is of Melungeon blood, so be it. We do seek the truth and sometimes it does surprise us!

Have your dna or that of a male relative with direct Hagan lineage checked. That will help answer questions re African American/mulatto or Native American/mulatto. Hagin/Hagan/Hagen dna list is pretty good but there are some glitches. Also even after several hundred years the facial and other physical features will point you in the right direction. If you have ever been to the barbeque restaurant that used to be next to the Cusseta, GA courthouse, you will know what I mean. There is no question that many of those folks are Native American descendants as evidenced by skin color, hair and facial features. Some things take a long time to change.

Hi David, I know that there are a lot of Hagans the States. My family line comes originally from Co Down, Northern Ireland. Frank and Robert Hagan emigrated to Nebraska around 1910. Robert was my greatgrandfather. He was born in 1887 and married Carolena LeDroit ( SECOND WIFE). They had two daughters Emme born in 1918 and Evelyn born in 1923. I am Robert's great grand daughter from his first wife, Jane O'Brien. They had two children John, born 1980 ( my grandfather) and his sister Ellen born 1909. Ellen lived in California when she married and I keep in touch with her daughter. I know that many of the family live in Nebraska, Oregon, Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida, Alberta in Canada. Robert lived in Twin Falls until his death in 1976. Evelyn also lived there with here husband Bill Murray. Emme lived in Oregon with her husband Leonard Wilson. The other Hagan names are still living relatives. Frank Hagan had 21 children and they are spread over many states. If you would like to e-mail on est59@msn.com with more details of your friend we can see if there is a connection. Regards. Elizabeth

Hi, I know your message was posted some years ago but I have just come across it. I believe we are related. My great grandfather Robert was Frank's youngest brother. He was married to Carolena Le Droit. He emigrated with Frank from Ireland and lived in Twin Falls, Nebraska. I have recently made contact with Louis, Frank's grandson. It would be great to get in touch. I do not know very much about the family. I hope to attend the next reunion. Louis is to let me know when and where it will be. I hope you get this message.

I was speaking of the Charles Hagan that is on the 1840 Ohio State Census just the page before the one that Samuel and Edward Hagan Tuscarawas Co, Ohio. Born 1799 in Pennsylvania as Samuel and Edward were. I believe that he stayed in Ohio from what I checked on the Census. Also believe that he is probably also son to Edward who was born about 1775 in Pennsylvania.

William, Edward, Charles, Geoge & Samuel were repeated often in this family as were Mary and Sarah for the girls.

Hi. As an added note there is Franklin Hagan whose family I have not been able to tie in to the tree. I remember the name being familiar but not in tree. The S A Hagan is not my Samuel. It is if I remember right a Samuel Hagan who married an Isabella Jones. My Samuel married Eleanor Jones. They did not divorce. It may not be helpful to you but perhaps you could take a look at it.
This is from the 1860 census in Keokuk Co, Iowa.

Franklin Hagan
Birth Year: abt 1856
Birth Place: Iowa
Gender: Male
Census Date: 1856
Residence State: Iowa
Residence County: Keokuk
Locality: Benton
Roll: IA_73
Line: 28
Family Number: 51
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
S A Hagan 37
Isabell Hagan 30
Charles M Hagan 11
John A Hagan 8
George W Hagan 6
Joseph M Hagan 4
Sarah E Hagan 2
Franklin Hagan 0

Hi. Thanks for writing. First of all while I DO believe it's that William is Samuel's brother there is some debate that he could also be the son of Charles Hagan instead. I have made note of this the online family tree. So that others could also check. Maybe someday someone will be able to confirm which one is correct with a Bible entry or such. By that time I had so many of his direct line and and online program won't let you separate it like Family tree.

Charles Hagan was on the page just before Samuel and Edward on the 1840 census. However I feel sure of what I do have on Williams descendents. It's quite possible that I am wrong though and Charles who was born about 1799 is the father instead. I am sure William was related to Samuel if not as a brother at the very least as cousin. There just weren't that many Hagan's in Ohio in 1840.

I would love to add the information on Franklin Lafayette Hagan, but I don't have him in my tree. I rechecked the census for 1860 of William's and it doesn't show a Franklin or Lafayette as one of his children.

Since I am missing Williams 1870 census I can't confirm.
Can you fill in the link for me that I seem to be missing. I only have two Frank Hagan's on my tree. One is the son of Samuel's brother George. The other is Frank O. Hagan and the sone of Samuel King Hagan b. 1887 I think in Iowa.

I am holding on to your information but can you confirm who his parents were and where I can find the source to confirm it. Thank you for writing.

Just saw your posts re Hagan & Barlow connection. We are searching my Dad's ancestry and have info on Mary "Polly" Hagan who had a number of children by a James 'Jim" Barlow. His wife was Elizabeth Dunn Barlow, He and Polly Hagan were never married. She owned over 1000 acres in her own right that she acquired by herself; these properties were located in Monroe, Allen, and Barren Counties, KY. We need to know her relationship to David Menior Goodman who lived with her in early 1800's- was he her son or a nephew? Her sisters were married to Goodman boys. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks, Sharon. Yes, I agree, not your Samuel, but you'll see in my other post I believe they are related. Especially if his in-laws, Isabelle's parent's, are indeed named Ross (mine's only secondhand info). The family appears again under S.A. Hagin in 1860 with their addition, Jefferson.

S.A. is explicitly Samuel A. in the 1850 Benton, Keokuk, IA census, age 31 born in Ohio.

I can't yet be sure whether Charles and Edward were brothers or father/son, but undoubtedly these Oh-Iowans have the same family origins. Below is not a complete listing of families, but outlines some members for discussing why I've arranged the familes as I have so far:

Charles (1) b1799 PA, settled in Tuscarawas, OH.
m. Margaret Bailes
sons:
Samuel (1) "S.A." b1819 (m. Isabelle Ross) d. c.1873
Settled Benton, Keokuk, IA 1843
sons:
Charles M. b1845
Geo W. b1849
William H. b1820
Settled Steady Run, Keokuk, IA, 1843
dau:
Alice
Joseph M. b1839
1860 Tuscarawas census w/mother Margaret,
Emigrated to Benton, Keokuk, IA, 1862 with mother Margaret in hh 1870
Charles J b1842 Physician relocated to Alexandria, MO

Edward b1777
Samuel (2) b1815 (m. Eleanor Jones) d. c.1893
settled briefly Wapello Co, IA and by 1870 Warren Co, IA
son:
Geo Washington b1842

Samuel (1), frequently identified as S.A., and William H. relocated together from Tuscarawas to Keokuk IA in 1843 and settled farms about 1 mile from each other. William's daughter, Alice, who is my ggrandmother, exchanged several autograph book entries with her "cousins" who I've identified as the daughters of Joseph M. and Charles J. and an "aunt" who is the wife of Charles J. S.A. died ~1875 (specifically 1873 according to an earlier posting on this thread). I am considering this a family group and have attributed them all to Charles (1) and Margaret (see 1850 Tuscarawas census). Joseph M is captured in the 1860 Tuscarawas and 1870 Keokuk census in the same HH with his mother, Margaret. His Iowa bio written in 1880 indicates his Tuscarawas origins and that Margaret was indeed his mother residing together after his father's death c1857.

The other Samuel (2) relocated briefly in nearby Wapello County, IA and then a bit farther away in Warren County. Sharon Downey has all of his line documented, but it is interesting to note, 1) both Samuels had sons named Geo W., 2) in 1873 a Marion and Frank Hagan was also found graduating school in Warren County (Belmont twp). Are these S.A.'s own Marion and Frank(lin) or more family namesakes? Maybe they relocated to their uncle's house for male guidance?

I appreciate the opprotunity for quesions. I don't have questions for you to ask at the moment, but will definitely think it over. In any case, photos of any Hagan stones would be great to share. Hedrick is situated on S.A.'s original property -- at least the southern portions of the property, so I expect the family was prominient in its beginning and any history of the town, probably only available locally, would also be great to share. My gggrandfather's property was in the middle of a line drawn between Hedrick and Martinsburg.

Before you go, you should check out http://www.beforetime.net/iowagenealogy/keokuk/index.html. In particular, look at the 1887 map around the vicinity of Hedrick in the SE corner of Benton Twp.

Can you narrow this down to just Missouri? I am researching Peter Oliver Hagan and his ancestors/descendants. So far I found:

Patrick Hagan, m. Elizabeth Mills, Florissant, St. Louis Co. Missouri
Son, George Hagan, b. 1828 Florissant, St. Louis, Missouri, m. Elizabeth Wills
Son, Peter Oliver Hagan, b. 1874, probably Perry County, Missouri,m. Esther Favell

Do you have any connection to this line?

I agree with you; finding the truth is part of the discovery. Until I started researching my genealogy I never knew that for a lot of my ancestors, the first child was premature.

WAS THERE A REASON YOU SENT THIS TO ME. I HAD NO QUESTIONS ABOUT MY RACE. WE ARE CAUSCIAN. MY RESEARCH WAS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO MY GREAT GRANDFATHER'S FIRST NAME MIGHT BE. MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER LOUISE CARRIE HULSEY/HAGAN BORN IN 1873 WAS FROM ROCKMART,GA. AND BOTH MY GRANDMOTHER NOVEL MOORE AND MY GREAT UNCLE ELLIS ERIE HAGAN WERE BORN IN ROCKMART, GA. MY GRANDMOTHER NOVEL GERTRAIL HULSEY WAS BORN IN JAN 1894, AND ELLIS ERIE HAGAN WAS BORN 21ST OF APRIL IN 1898. NOW IF YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT ELLIS FATHER'S FIRST NAME WOULD BE THEN I WOULD BE INDEPTED TO YOU. I DO KNOW FOR A FACT ON MY MOTHER'S SIDE WE DO HAVE JUST A MINUTE OF CHEROKEE BLOOD IN US. THANKS MARY

I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE 1ST NAME OF MY HAGAN IS, BUT HE SUPPOSEDLY WAS MY GREAT UNCLE ELLIS ERIE HAGAN'S FATHER. ELLIS WAS BORN IN 1898 IN ROCKMART,GA. POLK COUNTY, MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER WAS LOUISE CARRIE HULSEY, BORN IN 1872/73 IN POLK COUNTY, GA. NO ONE PRESENT OR PAST EVER KNEW HAGAN'S FIRST NAME. THERE WERE SOME HAGANS IN HALLS COUNTY,GA RIGHT NEXT DOOR. ACCORDING TO MY COUSIN THEIR FARM WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE HULSEY FARM. SOME SAY SHE PICKED THE HAGAN NAME OUT OF THE HAT. BUT SHE WAS BURIED AS LOUISE CARRIE HAGAN IN BLOUNT COUNTY,TN. IN THE EARLY 40'S. SO IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WITH INFORMATION I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM THEM.MY GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS JENNINGS THOMAS HULSEY AND HIS WIFE WAS SARAH ANN BAGWELL. NOW THE CHURCH RECORDS IN UTAH SHOW MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER APPLYING FOR MARRIAGE LICENSE WITH A LEE WILSON IN POLK COUNTY ON THE 1ST OF APRIL 1894, MY GRANDMOTHER NOVEL GERTRAIL MOORE WAS BORN JAN 1894. THEY SAY WILSON WAS HER FATHER. ANY INFO ON ANY OF THIS WOULD BE HELPFUL. MARY S.

I am certain that William isn't a son of Charles Hagan (son of Samual Hagan & Isabella Ross). Charles is my 3d great-grandfather and the information I have on him never has him having any children other than daughers Tempa and May.

DAvid

Yes, Samual Hagan & Isabella Ross are my 4th great-grandparents via their son, Charles Marion Hagan (1844-1918) and then via his daughter, Tempa Nevada Hagan (1869-1902).

David

I will try this again as my last posting failed.

I hope to be able to provide a more complete update of this informtion within the next few weeks. My mother and I plan to visit with a Hagan counsin of her's and visit the Rayburn cemetery north of Hedrick, Iowa where the older generations of Hagan's from this branch of the family is buried. Is there anything you want me to look on the tombstones?

My mother, Ruth Ann Green Rowland, is the only child of #12, Mae Hagan. Mae's real name was Ida Mary, but few people knew this as she always went by "Mae". She married Jesse Green and they lived most of their lives on a 100 acre farm between Hedrick and Fremont.

The counsin with whom we will be visiting is #113--Carol Jean Sauer White who lives in Rose Hill, Iowa.

I appreciate learning about Samuel's parents and I knew nothing other than it was believed that is mother's name was "Margaret". Where did you get the information about Samuel's parents? Do you know anything about Isabelle Ross' parents?
