William Hackney b abt 1794 VA?>Married Sarah Sally Shannon in Pike Co OH>d abt 1844 prob in Wappello Co IA

William Hackney has been a brick wall for my family's researchers for three generations. I am getting up there in years and don't see anyone to continue quest.

It is likely that William Hackney died in 1844 in Wappello County, Iowa, and there is a lone, simple grave marker on the Phillip Newquist Farm, Washington Twp SW 1/4 sec 4, that is believed to be his burial location. After his death, the family removed to their former home in Logan County, Illinois, near Mount Pulaski where William had been a teacher in a log cabin known as "Brush College."

Prior to 1832, William resided in Hancock County, Ohio, where he was appointed county auditor in 1828. On 24 Nov 1815 he married Sarah "Sally" Shannon. Local history books report Sally to have been the beautiful young daughter of a wealthy Kentucky landowner. I do not have birth or death information for Sally. I have in my files several accounts of William and his sons in Ohio which have been found in local history books.

Virginia is the state most often referred to as William's place of birth, although New Jersey is a possibility, as well. I have discovered a number of William Hackneys in Virginia in the proper time frame, but have not been able to make a positive connection.

After 60 years or more of trying to chip away at this brick wall (most of that aunts and grand aunts before me), any new clue would be appreciated, welcomed, even celebrated.

Frank Thompson

Their daughter, Anna Viola Hagan (my Great Grams) married Marion Washington McNealy in Ames, Indiana. Is this the Hackney family that you have discovered?

Re: Birth Date Help

It can be hard to find birthdates for years that early. The most likely place would be a death record, church marriage record, will or probate or possibly land records. You might get better luck if you post on the board for the county, or at least the state she was born in.
You also might look at a cemetery site, like www.findagrave.org

You are most welcome. I placed all the obituaries I found in response to your posting on the King County, Washington Board.

While I was unable to find a full obituary for Elwin W. Rasey I suggest you try this service through the Washington State Library as they have access to community newspapers:

http://www.sos.wa.gov/library/Obituaries.aspx

They will send you a PDF file via email if they find anything.

Do you know anything about John G. HACKNEY and Nancy Anderson? My GG Grandfather was James Anderson Hackney b. 1834 in VA. He had a sister, Edith or Edy, who married Spencer Vaughn. He had a brother John. They were all born in VA and came to live in AL. John left AL and supposedly returned to VA. Is James connected to this family?

I am trying to find someway of creating a soft copy, but until then, I am happy to share any information.
My ancestory is the BF Hackney/George Franklin Hackney line.
I wonder if anyone who can tell me of any documents that list the names of the children of Mary Harris Phillips and her husband Joseph P. Hackney. Also looking for documents on who her and his parents were. Joseph and Mary married in Wilkes County Georgia in 1809.

Birth Date Help

Hello everyone,
First, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, so apologize if this is in the wrong part of the forums.

I am trying to research the actual birthday and parents for an ancestor named Sarah Hackney who married Thomas Provance/Province/Provence in the 1720's or 1730's. I have guesses for her her parents - that of Joseph Hackney 1 and Charity Harlan however, the birthdates don't add up properly. So I was hoping for some help from you all. Any info would be so SO appreciated! Thank you in advance!
